64th Primetime Emmy Awards on ABC September 23, 2012

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, with help of Jimmy Kimmel, Kerry Washington (“Scandal”) and Academy Chairman Bruce Rosenblum, on Thursday announced the nominees for the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards.

“Mad Men” and “American Horror Story” were tied as the most nominated series, each with 17, followed closely by “Downton Abbey”, with 16. The cable mega-hit “Hatfields & McCoys,” the History Channel miniseries, also had 16, and HBO’s “Hemingway and Gellhorn” had 15. “Modern Family” is the most-nominated comedy this year with 14.

“Mad Men” has a chance to become the most honored drama in television history, if it wins this year’s Outstanding Drama Series Emmy. The series is currently tied with “Hill Street Blues” and “The West Wing”, each with four Outstanding Drama Series Emmy awards.

Home Box Office (HBO) is once again the overall network leader with 81 nominations. CBS led all broadcast networks with 60 nominations. Thanks to “Downton Abbey” and its “Masterpiece” projects, PBS received 58 nods.

Editor-in-chief of TV Media Insights Marc Berman aka “Mr. TV” was quoted in a Michael Starr-authored July 19, 2012 piece about the Emmys entitled “Always the Bridesmaid” (link) for the New York Post.

The article described how those recognized by the Television Academy with plenty of career Emmy nominations have yet to earn the prestigious award, such as Jon Hamm of AMC’s “Mad Men” and Bill Maher of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher”.

Berman stated, “You have to ask yourself who else is in competition that year. There’s always someone who has more momentum. …It’s like when ‘The Sopranos’ was on. Edie Falco and James Gandolfini always seemed to win.”

As with all awards shows, The Emmy Awards are a joke. Its all a matter of opinion. There is no measurable way to say that the acting, writing, directing is better or “Best”. If you are smart, you will watch SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL instead.

I know you’re allergic to any awards shows, TV-aholic, and I agree that it’s a bit absurd to consider one show or actor as better than another when it’s all subjective. For me, these events are more about the spectacle of it all. I’m most interested in seeing what memorable moments they produce and what stuff can benefit from being recognized. However, these award shows are usually more boring than not.

On a side note, there will soon be “awards” on this very site DIS-HONORING some of those in television. Hope you’ll be aboard for that one!
