CBS Wins Week of September 26

October 4, 2011 by Marc Berman in Highlights with 1 Comment

CBS dominated this second week of the 2011-12 season, finishing first overall in households, total viewers, adults 18-49 and adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research.   Fox, as usual, topped the adult 18-34 charts and both networks were close to year-ago levels.  ABC was on the downside, with a third-place finish in adults 18-49 and adults 25-54; while deteriorating NBC is staying afloat thanks to Sunday Night Football (the New York Jets at Baltimore this week).  Last-place The CW dipped by as much as 27 percent among adults 18-49 this week and is having its lowest rated season to-date.  None of The CW’s new entries, dramas Ringer and The Secret Circle included, are generating much interest.

There were four series premieres this week – sitcoms Suburgatory on ABC and How To Be a Gentleman on CBS; Fox drama Terra Nova, which kicked-off with a two-hour installment; and CW drama Hart of Dixie.  Suburgatory built from lead-in The Middle and is an improvement from year-ago Wednesday 8:30 p.m. occupant Better With You.  Terra Nova was sampled, but not at breakout levels.  How To Be a Gentleman looks positive on paper, but actually dipped from lead-in The Big Bang Theory by 39 percent in total viewers and 45 percent in adults 18-49.  And Hart of Dixie is yet another pothole on The CW’s choppy schedule.

Also floundering among the freshman entries: NBC’s The Playboy Club, which is now the first official cancellation of the season, Free Agents and Prime Suspect; and H8R on The CW, which still finished last among the 92 entries despite rising to a series high.  On the noticeable downside in week two was ABC’s highly touted Pan Am.  Disappointing, meanwhile, is the revival of Charlie’s Angels on ABC and Friday night CBS drama A Gifted Man, which is only a minor attraction for the 50+ crowd.

In more promising news, CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls moved into its regularly scheduled Monday 8:30 p.m. with a dominant performance among adults 18-49, and growth out of improved lead-in How I Met Your Mother and year-ago occupant Rules of Engagement.  Fox comedy New Girl earned a full season pick-up (with NBC comedies Up All Night and Whitney also green-lit for the remainder of the season).  Dramas Unforgettable (CBS), Revenge (ABC) and older-skewing Person of Interest (CBS) held up.  And Fox’s The X Factor is still a major time period improvement despite not being the breakout hit many were anticipating.

Here were the overall results for the week of September 26 based on Live Plus Same day data (with change versus the comparable year-ago period in parentheses), followed by the Freshman Series Scorecard and Top 30 rated programs of the week.
