THE TEAM BEHIND ABC’s “LOST” BOARDS THE STARSHIP ENTERPRISE FOR A SECOND SUCCESSFUL TRIP BUT UNDERWHELMS FROM FORECASTS

“Star Trek Into Darkness”, the second installment of Paramount’s reboot of the “Star Trek” movie franchise, helmed by JJ Abrams and written by fellow “Lost” cohorts Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, won the domestic box office for the 3-day weekend ending May 19 with an $70.56 million (according to data from the Rentrak Corporation).

<IMG SRC="http://www.containsmoderateperil.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Star-Trek-Into-Darkness-Poster.jpg" WIDTH=512 HEIGHT=256 ALT="Star Trek Into Darkness class="aligncenter"">

The film, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch and Zoe Saldana, opened on Wednesday, May 14 and has earned $84.09 million in total. However, its 2009 reboot original had larger box office figures (then, $75.2 million Fri.-Sun.; $79.2 million Thu.-Sun.). And, while the $70.56-million 3-day gross and $84.09-million 5-day gross is nothing to be too disappointed about, many forecasters projected a much higher opening number (as high as $110 million) due to high praise of the 2009 film combined with higher ticket prices and current releases in 3-D and IMAX (the 2009 film wasn’t in 3-D).

“Star Trek Into Darkness” dethroned the reigning 2-time weekend box office champion, “Iron Man 3.” The Disney/Marvel film finished in second place and grossed $35.18 million. In North America, “Iron Man 3″ has grossed a total of $337.07 million so far, ranking 25th on the all-time domestic box office chart, surpassing 2007′s “Spider-Man 3.” Globally, “Iron Man” has earned $1.07 billion.

Warner Bros.’ “The Great Gatsby” drops to third and 53 percent from last weekend to $23.42 million. Unlike this weekend’s top 2 grossers, which each earned an A Cinemascore (graded from a sample of movie audiences nationwide), “Gatsby” earned the lower B grade which may account for this weekend’s steep drop.

Also in theaters, Paramount’s “Pain and Gain”, grossed $3.1 million for fourth place. Returning to the weekend’s top 5 was the Fox/DreamWorks animation hit “The Croods” with a fifth-place $2.75 million in its ninth week of theatrical release.

The film box office should be buzzing even more next weekend — Memorial Day weekend from May 24-27 — with three big releases to hit cineplexes nationwide: Universal’s “Fast & Furious 6″, Fox’s animation pic “Epic” and Warner Bros.’ “The Hangover III.”

The top-10 domestic weekend box office estimates listed in descending order, per data collected as of Sunday, May 19, 2013 is available as follows:

17 NEW SERIES IN TOTAL; SIX THIS FALL

With Sunday Night Football and three hours of “The Voice” on the line-up, NBC will automatically seems like it has momentum next fall. But don’t be fooled. There is work to be done, and plenty of it, but NBC is at least making the attempt. Unlike recent seasons when the schedule remained populated with low-rated sitcoms, the departures of…deep breathe…”Go On,” “The New Normal,” “Guys With Kids,” “Up All Night” and “1600 Penn” (not to mention tired “The Office” and “30 Rock”) means it could be a fresh start.

The strategy for NBC next season was to develop enough comedies and dramas to take advantage of the promotional lift from the February 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia, and devise two schedules for the upcoming season. And there is no shortage of new product.

Fall 2013 will feature the arrival of six new series (dramas “The Blacklist,” “Ironside” and “Dracula;” and sitcoms “Welcome to the Family,” “Sean Saves the World” and “The Michael J. Fox Show”). And midseason 2014 (which, of course, is not etched in stone until the network sees how the fall line-up fares) will feature six confirmed new occupants (sitcoms “About a Boy” and “The Family Guide;” dramas “Crossbones,” “Believe” and “Crisis,” and reality/competition “American Dream Builders”). Waiting in the midseason wings are dramas “Chicago PD” and “Night Shift,’ sitcom “Undateable;” and non-scripted “Food Fighters.” “The Million Second Quiz,” a live game show, will air for 12 straight nights in the fall.

Do the math and NBC has announced 17 new series.

Surprisingly, “The Bigger Loser” made the fall cut, and will open on Tuesday into a 9 p.m. edition of “The Voice” (which leads into relocated “Chicago Fire”). The singing competition will remain intact in the Monday 8-10 p.m. block, but the lead-out this fall is new drama “The Blacklist.” Current Monday 10 p.m. occupant “Revolution” will shift to Wednesday at 8 p.m. (which could be too early for the intense drama), followed by veteran “Law & Order: SVU” and the remake of classic detective drama “Ironside” from 9-11 p.m.

Wisely, NBC will feature three new comedies on Thursday, but opening the evening with ratings-challenged (opposite red-hot “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS) puts the network at an automatic disadvantage. Returning (and relocated) “Parenthood” will cap off the Thursday at 10 p.m. Friday, meanwhile, will feature new drama “Dracula” out of the 8-10 p.m. combination of “Dateline” and “Grimm.” Saturday is all repeats and Sunday is football.

Also not returning on NBC is freshman drama “Deception” and newsmagazine “Rock Center With Brian Williams.” The futures of “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers,” “Fashion Star” and recently introduced drama “Hannibal” are still undecided. And “Community” and “Celebrity Apprentice” will be returning in midseason.

What follows are NBC’s new line-ups, fall 2013 and midseason 2014 (with new shows in caps), followed by the new series descriptions:

SIX NEW SERIES THIS FALL; FIVE MORE IN MIDSEASON

Fox has unveiled its programming plans for next season, which attempts to mix stability with 11 new series (six sitcoms, four dramas and one non-scripted). But the immediate obstacle, of course, is the deteriorating singing competitions: “The X Factor” in the fall and “American Idol” in midseason, which will remain in the Wednesday 8-10 p.m. and Thursday 9-10 p.m. programming blocks.

Four new series will be immediately present this fall. Drama “Sleepy Hollow” will air in originals Mondays at 9 p.m. (out of “Bones”) and in encores in the Friday 9 p.m. hour out of new Gordon Ramsay reality/competition “Junior Masterchef.” And two new sitcoms, “Dads” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” will populate the Tuesday 8 p.m. hour (into returning “New Girl” and “The Mindy Project”).

“Glee” remains Thursday at 9 p.m. (out of “The X Factor”), sports will air on Saturday, and Sunday’s 8-10 p.m. animation block is intact. Late fall, meanwhile, will feature the arrivals of two more new series: Drama “Almost Human” and sitcom “Enlisted.” “Almost Human” will replace “Bones” in the Monday 8 p.m. hour. And “Enlisted” will air out of returning comedy “Raising Hope” Fridays at 9:30 p.m. So, seven new series in total will air on Fox this fall.

Unlike NBC, Fox has not officially announced its complete midseason line-up. But waiting in the wings in the freshman series department are dramas “Rake” and “Gang Related”, and sitcoms “Surviving Jack,” “Us & Them” and animated “Murder Police.” Also returning is Kevin Bacon drama “The Following,” which will remain in the Monday 9 p.m. time period.

The CW is making changes to 80 percent of its five-night (and 10-hour) line-up, with only “Arrow” and “The Vampire Diaries” remaining in their established time periods. The network will introduce three new scripted dramas this fall (“The Originals,” a spin-off from “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Tomorrow People” and “Reign’), with the changes impacting all five evenings.

“Hart of Dixie” will move back to its original night, Monday, only at 8 p.m. ET this time and into relocated “Beauty and the Beast.” Recent Monday anchor “The Carrie Diaries,” the prequel to “Sex and the City,” will shift to Friday 8 p.m. into the surprise return of veteran reality/competition “America’s Next Top Model.” Current Friday “Nikita” will be held back until midseason for its final six episodes.

Tuesday will open with “The Originals,” followed relocated “Supernatural” at 9 p.m.; and Wednesday will feature The CW’s freshman breakout hit from this season, “Arrow,” into new drama “The Tomorrow People.” Thursday is crown jewel “The Vampire Diaries” into new drama “Reign.”

In addition to “Nikita” in midseason, The CW will introduce three additional series: dramas “The 100” and “Star-Cross” and non-scripted “Famous in 12.”

Overall, there are pluses and minuses to The CW’s schedule. The positives are the three new fall dramas, which sound perfectly compatible with their companion series, and leading off Tuesday with highly anticipated “The Originals” means it is not buried under a low-rated lead-in. But relocated “Hart of Dixie,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Carrie Dairies” are unlikely to fare any better than they did this season, and bringing back “America’s Next Top Model” is just plain unnecessary.

What follows is The CW’s schedule, with the new series in caps.

Monday
8:00 p.m. “Hart of Dixie” (new night)
9:00 p.m. “Beauty and the Beast” (new night)

Tuesday
8:00 p.m. “THE ORIGINALS”
9:00 p.m. “Supernatural” (new night)

Wednesday
8:00 p.m. “Arrow”
9:00 p.m. “THE TOMORROW PEOPLE”

Thursday
8:00 p.m. “The Vampire Diaries”
9:00 p.m. “REIGN”

Friday
8:00 p.m. “The Carrie Diaries” (new night)
9:00 p.m. “America’s Next Top Model”

DOUGLAS PUCCI WEIGHS IN ON BROADCAST in 2012-13

As the current traditional (September to May) television season comes to a close, we reflect on the past eight months and observe the eight lessons learned in that time:

1. CABLE: THE HOME OF TV’S NEWEST MEGA-HIT SERIES

Let’s see… what were the last big new hit series on broadcast television? “2 Broke Girls” took off for CBS in 2011-12. “The Voice” did well for NBC in its 2011 inaugural season. ABC’s “Modern Family” immediately flourished in 2010. CBS’ “The Mentalist” broke out in 2007-08. And, of course, the legendary 2004-05 season comes to mind when ABC debuted both “Desperate Housewives” and “Lost.” But the big new hits are becoming harder to find on broadcast.

Usually, the summer season is cable’s time to shine (and it still is). But within this official season, the viewer and demo figures of “The Walking Dead” on AMC, “Duck Dynasty” on A&E, and History Channel miniseries “The Bible” — even HBO’s “Game of Thrones” — have easily rivaled (and often surpassed) their broadcast network competition.

Follow @SonOfTheBronx

2. BIG NAMES, SMALL RETURNS

In an effort to boost interest in established series, several big-named celebrities were hired. Britney Spears on Fox’s “X Factor”, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban on Fox’s “American Idol,” and on the scripted front, Jennifer Hudson on “Smash” on NBC. In the end, however, it was all much ado about nothing. All three series experienced significant and worrisome ratings declines. “The X Factor” is entering its third season with its second consecutive major judging/coaching overhaul. Randy Jackson has officially announced his “Idol” departure, amidst rumors of the show’s other three judges getting the boot. And, the Tuesday “Smash” figures were so low, NBC sent the series packing to depressed Saturday.

3. THURSDAYS WERE TV’S NEW DUMPING GROUNDS
Saturdays have long been television’s wasteland. And Fridays were close behind until shows like “Shark Tank”, “Grimm”, “Undercover Boss”, “Blue Bloods” and “Last Man Standing” have recently buoyed the night in modest fashion. One can actually point to almost every night of the week and pick out some obvious duds. But this season, the typically lucrative Thursday nights was atypically filled with more stink bombs than usual.

NBC was already heading into the fall of 2012 with very low expectations for Thursdays — a night once known for “Must See TV.” Comedies “Up All Night”, “1600 Penn” and, for a brief time, “Go On” barely found an audience as did the network’s three 10 p.m. occupants — “Rock Center With Brian Williams”, “Do No Harm” and the critically-praised “Hannibal.” “30 Rock” finally concluded after six seasons, but it too was never a ratings-winner, and “The Office” and “Community” plummeted to series lows.

ABC, meanwhile, still cannot find an audience at 8 p.m. Drama “Last Resort” began decently but then skewed too old until it ultimately faded. “Zero Hour” barely made a blip and “Wife Swap” was mere filler until perennial summer game show “Wipeout” returned (which also started out slow). And oddly renewed “Beauty and the Beast” on The CW actually performed worse than its canceled 2011-12 time slot predecessor, “The Secret Circle.”

CBS’s only new series to make it to next season, drama “Elementary,” did not exactly impress the masses at large. It experienced one of the lowest-ever audience-retentions for programs airing out of the Super Bowl (although the game’s delay due to a power outage caused the episode to begin airing way past prime time) and it routinely placed a distant second in its 10 p.m. time slot in adults 18-49. And that was with solid “Person of Interest” as a lead-in.

While CBS’s “Two and a Half Men”, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” and Fox’s “Glee” may not technically be ratings-deficient these days, all three shows have gone creatively-defunct and are way past their primes. In other words: Much of Thursday night is becoming “Must Flee TV!”

4. “SCANDAL” IS A BONA FIDE HIT

While Thursdays have aired many ratings (and creative) failures, the ABC political drama from Shonda Rhimes and starring Kerry Washington (who also appeared in the recent box office and award-winning hit, “Django Unchained”) is one of broadcast TV’s few bourgeoning hits. It did just modestly well when it premiered in the spring of 2012, but its second season has seen a significant uptick. In adults 18-49, “Scandal” consistently wins its 10 p.m. time slot and while most shows have experienced the typical ratings declines in the spring, this show has not only maintained its numbers but has surpassed its lead-in: Rhimes’ veteran hit series, “Grey’s Anatomy.”

5. CBS AND FOX GOT CAUGHT PLAYING IT TOO CONSERVATIVE
Each year, there is always risk, of course, when laying out a new fall schedule. Most new shows fail to hit. And going into 2012-13, CBS and Fox rested on their laurels for the most part, and took a conservative approach. The result of their lack of aggression: lackluster dividends.

Fox depended mainly on their biggest hits, “X Factor” and “American Idol”, but they each declined a hefty 20-30 percent from last year. The network will bring back comedy “The Mindy Project” for next season, which, at several times this season drew a minuscule 2-3 million viewers based on Live+SD. And by now, we’ve already forgotten about “Ben and Kate” and “The Mob Doctor.” But there was one diamond in the rough: midseason drama “The Following” with Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy.

CBS wasn’t so lucky.

“Made in Jersey” went out as quickly as it entered. “Partners” delivered some of CBS’s worst Monday night ratings in decades. And “Vegas”, despite the top-notch pairing of Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis, failed to hold on to much of its “NCIS: Los Angeles” lead-in and was later shipped off to Fridays (and ultimate cancellation). The Eye net’s two midseason series, “The Job” and “Golden Boy”, were short-lived and made scarce impact. And the network’s lone new entry to survive the season, “Elementary”, wasn’t the huge breakout hit the network was hoping for (as noted in my section about Thursdays this season).

6. NBC PROUD TO HAVE TV’S TOP TWO BROADCAST SHOWS BUT STILL MUCH WORK TO DO
The Peacock network had a joyous September through December of 2012 — tops in adults 18-49 among all networks for the first time since the days of “Friends”, “Frasier” and “Will and Grace” — all thanks to “Sunday Night Football” and “The Voice.” But the absence of both in January 2013 sent the Peacock net crashing to fourth place. It was a midseason to forget with new but short-lived entries like “Deception”, “1600 Penn”, “Do No Harm”, “Ready for Love” and “Hannibal”, along with the disappointing returns for “Smash”, “Whitney”, “Fashion Star”, the over-bloated “Celebrity Apprentice”, and the Dan-Harmon-less “Community.”

“Revolution”, meanwhile, only survives because of the lead-in support from “The Voice,” but the audience retention is slim.

On the positive side, “Grimm” has consistently drawn young demo interest — moreso in its current test from airing out of the Tuesday edition of “The Voice.” Viewers are gradually coming back to NBC Wednesdays, thanks to Dick Wolf’s “Chicago Fire”. And, the network was able to halt the precipitous ratings decline of “Biggest Loser” by airing just one edition from only January through March. The reality contest was a respectable competitor to its direct time slot opponent, ABC’s perennial “The Bachelor.”

7. THE CW STILL EXISTS
Microscopic ratings have consistently plagued several of CW’s shows, like the finally ending “90210,” as well as “Sex and the City” prequel “Carrie Diaries,” “Hart of Dixie,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Nikita.” The figures for “America’s Next Top Model”, which used to deliver 3-4 million viewers/week not too long ago, have fallen by the way side.

Marc “Mr. TV” Berman sometimes states that a network can’t cancel everything. As it entered into 2012-13, with the majority of shows vastly underperforming at a continual basis for the netlet, one could have asked: is it possible the CW could actually reach the point of canceling everything… including itself?

Then came “Arrow,” based on the superhero character from DC Comics. “Arrow” was an instant big hit (by CW standards, that is) and there was renewed interest on Wednesday, pairing it with the long-running hit, “Supernatural.”

With “The Originals” on the horizon — the spinoff of the netlet’s other hit “Vampire Diaries” — the CW will still be around. For a little while, at the very least.

8. SPORTS ON TELEVISION IS AT ITS MOST PREMIUM VALUE
In this day of age where time-shifted viewing is part of the television household norm and where users of digital video recorders can fast-forward through ad breaks on recorded shows, sports is the most popular televised genre that advertisers treasure, now more than ever. Sporting events are DVR-proof. The end time of a sporting event is always unpredictable (making it difficult to record at an exact time frame) and by the event’s conclusion, results are widely known, aided by an ever-increasing social media impact.

Within the past two years, major professional and collegiate sports associations have struck enormous 9 or 10-figure deals with various networks to broadcast their product.

Over a decade ago, there was backlash at NBA commissioner David Stern’s decision to move the vast majority of his league’s games from his then-successful partnership with NBC to cable’s TNT and ESPN. In hindsight, the move was a rousing success as the league continues to thrive. This May — a month deemed as broadcast’s sweeps month — the NBA playoffs have given TNT and ESPN nightly demo victories over most (and sometimes, all) of its respective broadcast network competition.

The popular sport of college football eventually followed the NBA’s path to cable. Since their move to ESPN in 2011, their January championship bowl games have drawn similarly big audiences — even record cable crowds — than when they had aired on a broadcast network in years prior. Ratings (and profits) are expected to go even higher with their newly-installed playoff system, coming in 2015.

In March 2013, the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament — airing in a partnership of CBS, TNT, TBS and truTV — delivered its largest average viewership (10.7 million) since 1994′s 11.2 million viewers, when it had then aired solely on CBS.
And, mirroring the current edition, Shakira and Usher will step in for the sixth edition in midseason. Carson Daly will return as host for both cycles.

“I am so thrilled that our Voice family has grown from four coaches to six,” said executive producer Mark Burnett. “This show thrives on the ability of our coaches to continue to balance their enormous music careers with working on The Voice to coach some of the best undiscovered talent in America. The coaching panel of Christina, Cee Lo, Adam and Blake was at the heart of this show in its first three seasons and we are so lucky to have found equal success with Shakira and Usher in season four. Our best seasons are ahead of us.”

Unlike “American Idol” on Fox, which slid to record lows in its just concluded season, “The Voice” tops the reality charts with a 5.2 rating/14 share among adults 18-49 (ranking third overall in primetime). Tuesday’s telecast is averaging an also stellar 4.7/14.

UPDATED THURSDAY SCORECARD

It was a dominant Thursday for Fox courtesy of the two-hour “American Idol” season-ender. But 13.61 million viewers and a 3.4 rating/11 share among adults 18-49 (based on the fast affiliate data from Nielsen) was down by a hefty 7.88 million viewers and 47 percent in the demo from the year-ago season-finale (Viewers: 21.49 million; A18-49: 6.4/18 on 5/23/12, based on the live plus same day data). Remember the days when the “American Idol” season-ender housed 30-million viewers? This is, in fact, the first “Idol”-ender not to hit the 20-million mark.

Elsewhere, “The Big Bang Theory” concluded season five on CBS as the top-rated show of the night, with 14.78 million viewers and a 4.4/18 among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. “The Office” ended its nine-season (and 200 episode run) on NBC with a season-high performance (and a very satisfying send-off in this viewers’ opinion). The season-finale of “Grey’s Anatomy” still has life on ABC, but sophomore lead-out “Scandal,” also a season-ender, was the standout. And the two-hour season-finale of “Elementary” on CBS earned its renewal stripes with an adequate 8.93 million viewers and a 2.0/ 6 in the demo from 9-11 p.m. (opposite a night of heavy competition).
