Final Results for The London Olympics

NBC is reporting a total reach for the just concluded London Olympics of 219.4 million viewers on the NBCUniversal networks, making it the most-watched event in U.S. television history and most-watched non-U.S. Summer Olympics since the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Comparably, The London Olympics topped Beijing in 2008 by 12 percent and Athens in 2004 by 26 percent. The network averaged 31.1 million viewers over 17 nights in primetime, beating Beijing and Athens by 12 percent and 26 percent, respectively. And a 17.5 rating/20 share in households ties the 1988 Seoul Olympics as the highest-rated non-U.S. Summer Olympics since the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

NBC Olympics Digital set multiple records with video streams, engagement time and page views, meanwhile, with nearly 2 billion page views and 159 million video streams. NBC Sports Network had its most-watched event ever. The Today Show and NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams were on the double-digit percent plus side. And The London Olympics lifted ratings and viewership for NBC’s affiliated stations and NBC Owned Television Stations, while Telemundo more than doubled its viewership from the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The real question, of course, is whether or not the vastly improved promotional platform will benefit the network’s new fall series. Stay tuned.
