I agree with everything you said. The problem is unlike 25, 30 years ago a show like Cosby or Roseanne isn’t going to explode at the getgo. It’s still possible but highly unlikely, especially when the network itself is struggling so bad. 2BG is a hit because its on CBS and in a great timeslot protected by 2 other hits. As a result it has done well even on its own. NBC doesn’t have anything close, not even the office that can be considered a true hit by network TV standards. That’s why I think they need to be more aggressive with launching an entirely new comedy night, preferably Tuesday. They can start advertising over the summer like ABC did in 09 before launching their Wednesday comedy lineup. They also have an advantage with the olympics on right before the season starts. I agree they need to keep Biggest loser, parenthood and a few others but putting their most promising new sitcoms on Thursday with community and the office is a recipe for disaster.

I am still amused how low of a standard people hold NBC to. A 1.7 is a bad rating for any show. I don’t care that the rest of the NBC lineup sucks ,and NBC gets low ratings everywhere. Community’s ratings still are awful even if they are better than some of the other NBC losers. NBC needs to clean out the garbage including Community and find some new hits. They found The Voice, and now need to find some comedies and dramas with some mass appeal. Comedies with under 4 million viewers is ridiculous. The show is a loser.

You’re right, but NBC (a) can’t cancel everything, (b) going into next season with 90% all-new shows is suicide (many of them will die) and costly (all-new shows + replacement shows when some of the new shows die = a whole lot of $$$ burned) and (c) there is brand value in keeping media darling shows like “Community” whose fan base is rabid, influential (practically every major TV critic in the States) and buzz-sensitive (ratings are slightly-up from before the hiatus; they learned to watch it live or risk losing the show for good).

NBC is in rebuild mode for the first time in ages thanks to “The Voice” joining “Sunday Night Football” as promo-vehicles-for-the-network high-rated shows. When you’re rebuilding you don’t blow-up the building and start from scratch, you hold on to what still works even if its down (“Law & Order: SVU,” “The Biggest Loser,” “Parenthood”), get rid of than what doesn’t work (“Awake,” “The Sing-Off,” half their sitcoms, etc.) and build the new (Fall 2012/2013′s fresh crop of pilots) on top of the old. After the Zucker/Silverman regime the current NBC is like the US economy under Obama: Bush fucked it up royal and Obama is fixing it, but you can’t expect miracle turnarounds on the first round but only a small recovery as the foundation for future growth. And, like the Republicans hounding Obama at every turn, NBC has to contend with every other network (broadcast and cable, including parent company siblings like USA) taking advantage of the load on its shoulders by targeting its weak spots.

Give it time, and “Community” definitely is coming back for at least one more season. It gets buzz, it gets decent-considering-everything-else numbers, it gets critical acclaim and it needs one more season to come close to syndication-package numbers (which NBC would own since it’s their show). I don’t watch it but even I think seeing its ratings bounce up after being off the air for months deserves a renewal notice.

TBBT was better without Amy and more focus on Sheldon and Ray.

NBC will continue with these niche sitcoms until they get beaten from CW and maybe then they will wake up, it’s time to let go thursday comedies, you can have “must see tv” on another night.

Wow Community held up better than I thought it would. 30 Rock losing lead in at 8:30 is all they should have to know that its time to close shop there. Up All Night was doomed the minute it joined the Thursday death ring.

It’s way way past time for NBC to get rid of 30 Rock. It shouldn’t matter who is involved with the show.

Wow, The CW is in serious trouble. When a new episode of your highest rated show is getting less than 2.5 million, it’s time to start planning an exit strategy. And it looks like the NBC Thursday 10PM slot has claimed another victim.

The CW is a hot mess. The Secret Circle will still likely get a pity renewal.

I don’t necessarily think it’s a test. It had to be done so all 10 episodes aired by May 6.

It can be both a necessity and a test. “Once Upon A Time” is a repeat that week, so no lead-in support for “GBC” from ABC’s hottest show either. It’ll sink-or-swim based on its own mojo (or lack of).
