NBC – The New Normal (series premiere / preview)
Viewers: 6.91 million (#1), A18-49: 2.5/ 6 (#1)

Currently the pretension of THE NEW NORMAL from the last half hour of THE VOICE is just 53%. I am sure, once Finals are in, that number will fall below 50%.

As Marc would say, “Tic-Toc, the cancellation clock is ticking.”

Pretty bad #’s for The New Normal. If it can’t get good ratings after the season premiere of The Voice it is not going to do well on Tuesday nights without a great lead-in.

NBC original programming continues to suffer…

How is losing 47% of its lead in anything but horrible?

THE NEW NORMAL is actually THE NORMAL NORMAL for NBC.
Bad ratings, viewership to full under 5 million, demo ratings below a 2.0… THE NBC NORMAL/

There wasn’t any overrun for The Voice, so I don’t think it’ll drop that far. The Voice usually gets adjusted up by 0.1 or 0.2, so it’s retention will fall because of that mostly.

With The New Normal, a 2.5 is a very respectable debut, especially for NBC at 10 PM. If it were 8 PM or 9 PM, it would have different expectations but it isn’t. For comparison, it did roughly as well as MasterChef and Hell’s Kitchen season finales and I haven’t seen any cancellation comments on those ratings.

But I also agree that with The New Normal, it’s Tuesday ratings are crucial. It needs to hold close to the 2.5 and definately be above the 2.0 mark. So we’ll have to see what happens tonight.

The real story is Go On. A 1.8 for a repeat is outstanding. If it follows the traditional repeat to original airing ratio, we’re looking at at least a 3.6 demo for this show. I’m not willing to go that far yet, but I think a 3.0+ demo performance is very likely and that would be amazing for NBC considering its track record for scripted shows. Go On right now is very promising and that could be the show which helps out The New Normal.

ABC renews shows under that has fallen beneath the 2.0 barrier (Private Practice, Body Of Proof, Last Man Standing), so it’s not that unusual. NBC needs to rebuild, but in order to get there, it’s going to have to keep under 2.0′s until May Sweeps. NBC has at least a two or three year rebuilding plan here.

The New Normal got a better 18-49 rating than Smash was getting in the slot, right?

We also have to remember that the pilot was already available to screen on-line before it premiered last night. I also think it could possibly be another example of network sitcoms not working in the 10-11PM hour.

All that being said, tonight is the final test. If it bombs tonight in its regular slot against soft competition — then, yes, “tick-tock, the cancellation clock is (definitely) ticking!”

HK or MC are summer series and didn’t have the benefit of having 13 million viewers lead into them.

We all know the expected ratings for a successful summer series and a successful series during the regular season are pretty wide.

TNN was promoted heavily. During the Olympics and during SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL, the night before. I am sure it received heavy promotion during AMERICA’S GOT TALENT, but I don’t watch that show, so I can’t be sure.

I predicted TNN would be the first series to be cancelled. Right now, it looks to be on schedule.
