Notre Dame is going to score a huge number for that championship game on January 7th. ABC really shouldn’t gave ESPN that many major sporting events now ESPN is going to clear 30+ million for that game.

Truth be told, I thought the A18-49 for ABC’s ‘Saturday Night College Football’ featuring the Notre Dame v. USC game would be considerably higher, especially that last half hour when the game was so close leading up to that brilliant goal-line stand by the Notre Dame defence. Perhaps the Nielsens will rise when the finals are announced (to a 5.0 A18-49 perhaps).

It really bothers me that NBC does not participate in Notre Dame’s post-season play via their long-running (since 1991) ‘Notre Dame Football’ franchise. Allowing other networks to ride upon the Notre Dame gravy train is akin to FOX getting rights to ‘The Big Bang Theory’s season finale. Wouldn’t it be a nice gesture towards their longtime broadcaster for Notre Dame to now use their negotiating prowess to insist upon an NBC co-broadcast arrangement with ESPN for whichever bowl game Notre Dame participates in? Then, fans of Notre Dame would be able to choose between the home broadcaster (NBC) or the away broadcaster (ESPN) for their play-by-play commentary.

I’m clearly in the minority here but I have liked all three episodes of Made in Jersey. It’s not reinventing the wheel but the performances are good. I don’t blame CBS for pulling the plug, the ratings were horrible, but I just wish it had lasted a little bit longer.

Keep dreaming Notre Dame homer. If NBC wants post-season college football, they should pony up for the rights.

Wow, Notre Dame/USC had roughly 10 times the viewers as Oregon/Oregon State.

The Notre Dame/USC game had national championship implications with Notre Dame all but guaranteed to play for the championship if they beat USC. I don’t think Fox’s Oregon/Oregon State match up could quite compare with that appeal. Very few people probably even cared about the Oregon/Oregon State outcome…it would be interesting to see how the game performed on the West Coast as opposed to the rest of the country.

Overall, Fox has had a mixed bag in its first season airing college football in primetime on Saturday. The viewers have fluctuated from just 1.8 million viewers for the Hawaii/USC season opener back in September to a high of 4.6 million viewers for the West Virginia/Texas matchup in early October. (The Oregon/USC match-up in early November got a similar 4.5 million viewers.) A big reason for those lower numbers could be because Fox only airs games featuring teams from the Pac-12 and Big 12 conferences. Like it or not, those two conferences are really localized…the West Coast for the Pac-12 and in Middle America (mostly) for the Big 12. I would classify both of these conferences as second-tier conferences, and the ratings seem to reinforce that image. I don’t know how much control ABC has in choosing their Saturday primetime game, but their pickings are not confined to just two conferences.

On a personal note, I believe that ABC – under the control of Disney – has lost too much (or all) authority of its sports division to ESPN…even rechristening ABC Sports as ESPN on ABC. I remember reading that some ABC affiliates started to grouse about the lack of sports programming on ABC, which is one reason why the two-hour Saturday afternoon block “ESPN Sports Saturday” was created back in 2010. In the event that Disney were to ever sell off ABC, it would leave the network essentially without a viable sports division.

With ABC Sports a thing of the past, ESPN essentially has a monopoly on virtually every college sport, with the exception of the NCAA Basketball March Madness, which remains on CBS (and now shared with Time Warner). In some ways, the recent decisions of CBS and NBC to launch their own sports networks is puzzling. (CBS rechristened College Sports Television as CBS Sports Networks, while NBC did the same with Versus, which is now NBC Sports Network.) Even Fox is supposedly getting in on the action, reportedly looking to transform Speed into a national sports network. While these networks struggle to get enough programming to fill out their line-ups, perhaps once they get established, they can begin chipping away at ESPN’s dominance.
