-Ratings Breakdown:
Leadership was split on this first Tuesday of the 2011-12 season, with CBS the most-watched network and Fox No. 1 among adults 18-49 (with a 0.3 rating point advantage over CBS in the demo). Fourth in both categories was NBC, followed by distant The CW, which saw week two of Sarah Michelle Gellar drama lose steam.
In season premiere-news, year nine of CBS’ NCIS finished as the most-watched show of the evening, as expected, with 19.55 million viewers at 8 p.m. And it bested Fox’s competing Glee among adults 18-49, with a 4.2 rating/12 share in the demo. Comparably, that was right on par from one year earlier (Viewers: 19.41 million; A18-49: 4.0/11 on 9/21/10).
Next on CBS was the third season-opener of spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles at 16.69 million viewers (#1) and a second-place 3.6/ 9 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m. Compared to one year-earlier (Viewers: 15.76 million; A18-49: 3.4/ 9 on 9/21/10) this was up by 930,000 viewers and six percent in the demo. Both NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles are poised for continued success this season.
In series-premiere news, crime solver Unforgettable on CBS at 10 p.m. launched with a dominant finish in both total viewers (13.97 million) and adults 18-49 (2.9/ 8) at 10 p.m. Compared to the launch of former time period occupant The Good Wife (Viewers: 12.84 million; A18-49: 2.5/ 7 on 9/28/10), this was an increase of 1.13 million viewers and 16 percent in the demo. Retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of NCIS: Los Angeles (Viewers: 16.43 million; A18-49: 3.5/ 9), meanwhile, was solid at 85 percent in total viewers and 83 percent among adults 18-49. This is a positive start for Unforgettable.
In last night’s other series-premiere, sitcom New Girl on Fox was off and running, with 10.08 million viewers (#3) and a first-place 4.7/12 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m. One year earlier, former time period occupant Raising Hope debuted with 7.31 million viewers and a 3.1/ 8 in the demo (out of 12.45 million viewers and a 5.6/16 among adults 18-49 for Glee). At 8 p.m., season three of Glee lost noticeable steam with 8.91 million viewers (#3) and a 3.8/11 among adults 18-49 (#2). Compared to the year-ago opener, Glee was down by 3.54 million viewers and a hefty 32 percent in the demo. Given the weaker lead-in support, New Girl is a total standout (and Glee is on the definite downside).
Also on Fox, the season two premiere of Raising Hope at 9:30 p.m. dipped to 6.87 million viewers (#3) and a 3.1/ 8 among adults 18-49 (#2) at 9:30 p.m. Retention out of New Girl for the worthy scripted half-hour was 68 percent in total viewers and 66 percent in the demo.
Over at ABC, an 8 p.m. edition of Dancing With the Stars, Meet the Cast averaged 10.74 million viewers (#2) and a fourth-place 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49. That led into the live Dancing With the Stars Results Show, which was on the map with 14.54 million viewers (#2) and a 2.8/ 7 in the demo (#3) at 9 p.m. One year earlier, however, Dancing With the Stars was noticeable stronger at 18.52 million viewers and a 3.4/ 9 in the demo (on 9/21/10). Is the novelty beginning to wear off?
At 10 p.m., season two of ABC crime solver Body of Proof finished second with 9.65 million viewers and a 2.3/ 6 among adults 18-49, which was virtually identical to year-ago failed occupant Detroit 1-8-7. Retention for Body of Proof out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Dancing With the Stars (Viewers: 14.81 million; A18-49: 3.0/ 7) was acceptable at 65 percent in total viewers and 77 percent in the demo.
On NBC, The Biggest Loser is showing its age, with the season-premiere at a diluted 6.13 million viewers and a 2.3/ 6 among adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Here is the half-hour breakdown:
The Biggest Loser (NBC)
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 6.06 million (#4), A18-49: 2.2/ 6 (#4)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 6.12 million (#4), A18-49: 2.3/ 6 (#4)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 6.14 million (#4), A18-49: 2.3/ 6 (#4)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 6.19 million (#4), A18-49: 2.4/ 6 (#4)
One year earlier, The Biggest Loser opened with 7.22 million viewers and a 2.9/ 8 in the demo on 9/21/10. At this point, The Biggest Loser should be trimmed down to one hour.
At 10 p.m., episode two of the new season of NBC’s Parenthood finished third in both total viewers (5.26 million) and adults 18-49 (2.1/ 6). Compared to the year-ago evening (Viewers: 5.85 million; A18-49: 2.5/ 7 on 9/21/10) that was a loss of 590,000 viewers and 16 percent among adults 18-49.
Last, and very least, was The CW’s combination of relocated 90210 (Viewers: #5, 1.56 million; A18-49: #5, 0.7/ 2), which should have been canceled two years ago, and week two of Ringer (Viewers: #5, 1.96 million; A18-49: #5, 0.9/ 2). While Ringer did improve on both 90210 and year-ago failed time period occupant Life Unexpected (Viewers: 1.45 million; A18-49: 0.7/ 2), week-to-week it slipped by 880,000 viewers (2.84 to 1.96 million) and 25 percent among adults 18-49 (1.2/ 3 to 0.9/ 2). If there is more erosion next week, it could be off to the “”loser’s” circle for Ringer.
