I wonder how long it will take someone to say “see, Saturdays aren’t dead, NBC can get 26 million viewers”. The NFL is an anomaly, in that it will likely be successful no matter where it airs. How many of those 26 million viewers would still be watching NBC if not for the NFL?

Saturdays are dead because the networks are no willing to put in the effort to program the night, perhaps because of their single minded determination to only program to people in the 18-49 age group. In fact, NBC deserves a lot of the blame for the current repeat riddled Saturday schedules. NBC, perhaps on a lark, decided to plug in reruns of “Law & Order” on the night years ago and saw that it could get just as many viewers with reruns as they could with new, original programming. Fast forward to 2013 and “48 Hours” is the only regularly scheduled series to air on the night (not including “Cops” on Fox, which has lost its spot to college football in the fall).

That was probably easily the worst prime time wild card since they started airing the games at night on ABC in the early 2000s. I knew the game wouldn’t be good as the Vikings really didn’t deserve to be in the playoffs. The Cowboys, Bears, or Giants should’ve been in for sure to face either Green Bay or San Francisco. NBC should’ve been a little bit more smarter and chose the Seattle @ Washington game instead. The game earlier in the day which was a rematch of last year’s game between Cincinnati @ Houston was the better game and probably improved its numbers from last year. Houston is still a new team but their national ratings have been solid this year, a deep run into the playoffs could help their national presence in the future.

Really? You mean you knew Minnesota/Green Bay would be bad after their Week 17 classic last Sunday? Doubtful.

The Cowboys, Bears, or Giants should’ve been in for sure to face either Green Bay or San Francisco.

Well, we all can’t have what we want, but that’s how tremendous Peterson was this season. And who knew Ponder wouldn’t be active for last night. Webb as QB was a drastic downgrade for them.

Also, Dallas always disappoints down the stretch these days. Chicago and N.Y. Giants each stumbled too much late in the season as well. As much as I love and root for the Giants, their usual schizophrenic way they play every year (great early, subpar later on) costs them from being annually successful. Quite amazing they were able to win two Super Bowls in this era.

NBC should’ve been a little bit more smarter and chose the Seattle @ Washington game instead.

I initially thought NBC would select that game but it doesn’t have the star power Minnesota and Green Bay has.

The game earlier in the day which was a rematch of last year’s game between Cincinnati @ Houston was the better game and probably improved its numbers from last year. Houston is still a new team but their national ratings have been solid this year, a deep run into the playoffs could help their national presence in the future.

While Houston is an improved team, it doesn’t yet have the national resonance because they are not a proven winner. Projections are they’ll get crushed again at Foxboro next weekend. The early Bengals-Texans game might’ve been a better game yesterday, but still, those squads are from markets that are not usually used to playoffs.

Deception
After a famous socialite is found dead, a female detective (Meagan Good) who grew up as the same house – as the maid’s daughter – returns to help solve the murder. Victor Garber, Laz Alonso, Wes Brown, Tate Donovan, Marin Hinkle, Katherine LaNasa and Ella Rae Peck round off the ensemble cast.

-Time Period: Monday 10 p.m. ET
-Lead-in: The Biggest Loser
-Competition: Castle (ABC), Hawaii Five-O (CBS)

-The Scoop:
Executive producers Liz Heldens and Gail Berman on the genesis of Deception:

Liz Heldens: “Two of my favorite movies are Donnie Brasco and The Departed, and then I was sort of thinking about how you could do an undercover show with a female protagonist, and at the same time NBC was looking for a soap. And so then I sort of thought could Donnie Brasco and the movie Sabrina have a baby? And so they did. So that was how it happened.”

Gail Berman: “Notorious is a favorite movie of mine, and so it all sort of fell into place based on the fact that what Liz was talking about and what I was thinking about in terms of Hitchcock really fell into place in the kind of thriller that we thought NBC might be looking for.”

-The Reality:
With fall frosh entry Revolution slated to return to the Monday 10 p.m. hour in March, you could refer to Deception as time period filler. And lead-in The Biggest Loser (which could benefit by taking a rest) is not The Voice, so there is no reason to believe the overall ratings for Deception will match, or even come close to, Revolution. While facing proven entries Castle on ABC and Hawaii Five-O on CBS is not the most competitive hour in primetime, it is not easy either.

-Odds of Survival for Deception (Based on 1-1 to 10-1 odds): 5-1

Regarding The Biggest Loser, is it only on the air from January until March? It used to go all the way from January to May, so is NBC cutting out stuff or are they giving it a different timeslot once The Voice returns?
