Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj aren’t bad addition to the American Idol. They are talkative and the conversation between the judges seems natural. The X Factor, for instance seems so staged and unnatural, from the judges, to the production. But I still consider The Voice as the best talent show right now.

Mariah is a goddess on Idol, but I have a feeling her and Nicki are going to turn off older viewers and heterosexual men. Especially with the edit Mimi is getting.

I don’t think that AI can recover in the ratings however. It might have some initial sample, but that’s it. But if I’m wrong, that will be some good news for FOX.

It is never a good idea to judge “American Idol” based on its first set of episodes, since they focus on the “audition” rounds, but it will be interesting to see the half-hour breakdowns for the two-hour premiere. If “Idol” loses audience over the course of the episode, it could spell trouble for not only the franchise, but also Fox.

Personally, I think that Fox is in the same position that NBC was in about 10 years ago. NBC had mega hits like “Friends”, “Frasier” and “ER” and second tier hits like “Will & Grace” masking the slow erosion of the network’s audience. Similarly, Fox has used “Idol” and now “X-Factor” to mask its slow erosion as well. Mondays have suffered without “House”, the two-hour comedy bloc on Tuesday has not been a success, “Glee” and the Sunday animated comedies are down and starting to show their age, while Fridays are nothing short of a jumbled up mess. Fox better hope that “Idol” doesn’t deteriorate even further this season, otherwise, their problems may only be just beginning.

I hope the franchise ends this year or next. I’m sick of it, and all other music competition shows.

But Fox only has Idol and its been holding them up for years. NBC at that time had a lot of HUGE shows. Now, mostly everything on Fox gets bad-mediocre ratings (excluding their animation shows). I would say Fox is in a slightly worse position than ABC was last year. Last year, ABC had a few shows doing ok/good (Wednesday comedy block+Revenge, Grey’s, PP, DWTS, OUAT, DH, Shark Tank) which made up 11 hours of its 22 hour primetime schedule. Similarly this year, Fox has Idol/ X factor, Glee, and the animation block which make up 7 hours out of its total 15 hours of primetime.

Less primetime hours and football overrun also helps, until AI FOX had successful shows like MWC, BH90210, Melrose Place, X-Files, The Simpons, Ally McBeal, Malcolm in the Middle, not all of them were blockbusters but did skew young enough which pushed FOX to #2 in 18-49 several years until Must See TV seized to exist.

I don’t understand how year after year Parenthood is seen as a “bubble series” by NBC when it always delivers steady or growing ratings that are much higher than the majority of other shows on NBC. It should be a shoo in for renewal.

I’m sorry but I will never understand why people would wish a series to end. If you don’t like it then don’t watch. But really in general and another matter it seems like it’s cool to bash idol, yet it still is the only show that has produced hit singers.

I just think it’s interesting to think that a show that is routinely in the top five most watched shows of the year is going to end. It’s not just that until last year American Idol was number one in terms of both viewers and the key for a record number of consecutive years, it’s that it’s Fox’s most successful show, the one that has allowed them to stick with shows like Fringe, so why would the network cancel it? That just doesn’t make any sense.

It can be very annoying to hear constantly about a show you hate though. I know I get annoyed by people who act like Idol is the only show on TV. If it wasn’t for the new panel I’d probably want it gone too.
