I think DWTS get’s sampled tonight. There is no Voice which will get people to tune into DWTS and see how they do. I have actually heard people saying this was a decent cast. I actually like this cast better then past seasons. Will tune in to see how each does and to see if I will stay with it for the rest of the season.

I wonder how old skewing DWTS will go tonight. Zero buzz, even Marc when the cast was announced thought it was mundane. It may have a sizable amount of eyeballs but that Demo is becoming non competitive at this point.

It’s very likely going to be very old skewing. There is literally no one on the announced cast that appeals to the 18 to 49 demographic. The Voice should completely dominate it in the demo next week.

I’m more intrigued by Bates Motel. Ratings predictions are all over the board on social media for this show. A&E has promoted it heavily, so viewers should be aware of it.

I agree that’s highly unlikely, CBS giving the timeslot over to Golden Boy is a sign right there that they will be done with the show after this season. Out of their dramas it has the least likely chance of coming back.
I’m not that sure that they won’t keep Golden Boy either, it just depends on how many dramas they bring in next season to take timeslots.

I have to agree. There’s always a chance Vegas could return if it over performs expectations, but I always figured that Vegas was done once Golden Boy started airing on Tuesdays. The move to Fridays is just a way to finish up the episodes and try to recoup some of their loses.

Vegas, Golden Boy, CSI:NY are gone, The Mentalist will get its 5th season and perhaps even a 6th (depending if TGW finishes next season or not)

VEGAS has a chance for a 2nd season IF it can do very well on Fridays. Needs to average 9.5 million viewers and a 1.6 demo rating, or more, to earn that renewal.

I’d say that’s highly unlikely. I don’t think they care that much about the viewership number but I agree that a 1.6 is about what it needs to get another season.

Any other network, and I would agree that total viewership is a non factor. But CBS likes the high viewer numbers, if the Demo is in a good sport along with it. VEGAS is not a show like the office which would struggle to get 5 million viewers, but pul a 1.9 demo rating. To get to a 1.6+, you need 9.5+ million in viewers.

I will DVR “Bates Motel” because it sounds interesting, and I’ve always enjoyed Alfred Hitchcock’s more subdued “horror” films (leaving the blood and gore to the imagination is scarier than showing everything since it allows the viewer to imagine it in their own minds).

The broadcast networks could do series like “Bates Motel”, but their business model kind of precludes them from doing so. That is what makes cable so appealing, whether it be from a viewers standpoint or from the viewpoint of a writer/producer. Cable can do the 10-15 episode seasons and have them spaced out for a full calendar year. The broadcasters want to bloat the episode order to 20 or 22 episodes and have new episodes air during the full (Sept. to May) season. Such a workload/pace simply causes some of these thin premises (e.g. “Revenge”, “Deception”, “Once Upon a Time”, etc.) to collapse creatively.

If the broadcasters want to continue to ape the cable networks, they will need to do what Fox is doing with “The Following” and stick to shorter seasons (although I’m sure that if Kevin Bacon did not require it, Fox would gladly order more episodes) and have several time slots shared between these short-run series. Perhaps shows like “Revenge” and “Once Upon a Time”, which are having sophomore slumps, could keep better ratings if handled in such a manner. It seems like with the broadcast networks, the old phrase “less is more” has been flipped on its head and often times “more (episodes) is less (ratings)”.

Red Widow: After watching episode 4 (week 3) of this show, I really feel like the ball was dropped with this show. The premise is good but the writing is downright bad at times and some of the acting is below average as well. Another strike out by ABC this year in the new drama department. The only new show they debuted all year worth watching was Nashville and they promoted that rather poorly. They best hope that they don’t strike out next season or they’ll really have some problems on their hands.

Regarding ‘Dancing with the Stars’, I would think that they’re casting Mr. Sean Lowe, that fellow who just picked his favourite lady on ‘The Bachelor’ will draw over a sizeable slice of ‘The Bachelor’s demo week-over-week and going forward until he’s knocked off the show. One has to wonder how much they’ll play up his relationship with his no doubt sexy-hot dancing coach, while his new heartthrob of merely a week sits off stage, forlornly clutching her wilting rose for the next two months.

I too am most curious about ‘Bates Motel’. The sequels to PSYCHO were absolutely terrible, but I thought Mr. Gus Van Sant did a reasonable job with his PSYCHO remake a few years back.

In a bit of old-fashioned series cross-pollination, Mr. Sean Lowe is bringing his roses over to ‘Dancing with the Stars’, and ABC has fingers crossed that he dances his way until the end of the May Sweep.

Monday 3/18/13 Metered Markets
Solid Return for “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC

Household
Rating/Share
ABC 10.6/17
CBS 5.6/ 9
Fox 4.8/ 7
NBC 4.0/ 6
CW 0.6/ 1

———-

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Monday 3/20/12
Fox: +37, CW: no change, ABC: – 9, CBS: -15, NBC: -40

———-

-Winners:
“Dancing With the Stars” (ABC), “Castle” (ABC)

-Honorable Mention:
“How I Met Your Mother” (CBS), “2 Broke Girls” (CBS), “Mike & Molly” (CBS), “Hawaii Five-O” (CBS)

-Losers:
“The Carrie Diaries” (CW), “Deception” (NBC)

———-

-Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy opening week victory for ABC, which bested the No. 2 network, CBS, by a hefty 89 percent in the overnights. Third overall was Fox, followed by NBC and, of course, The CW, which barely registered courtesy of “The Carrie Diaries” (#5: 0.8 rating/1 share) and a repeat of “Hart of Dixie” (#5: 0.4/ 1).

Before we begin our analysis, there are two immediate observations. The scenario will change next week once “The Voice” opens its new season on NBC (the network is counting the minutes at this point). And the gap among adults 18-49 will decrease once the fast affiliate results are released.

The new season of “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC was off and successfully running, with a 12.1/18 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, this dipped by only 10 percent from the year-ago season opener (13.4/20 on 3/19/12, which translated into 18.79 million viewers and a 3.5 rating/9 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data). And the fluctuation in the four half-hours was only three-tenths of a rating point (peaking at a 12.3/18 at 9 p.m.). Congratulations, Tom Bergeron and company. And sorry D.L. Hughley, who trailed the pack with a mere 12 points from the judges in total.

“Castle,” which at this point can totally stand on its own, followed “Dancing With the Stars” with a dominant 7.7/13 in the overnights at 10 p.m. (which was six percent below the 8.2/14 one year earlier).

In season-finale news, two hours of “The Biggest Loser” on NBC paled in comparison to “Dancing With the Stars,” with a 4.8/ 7 from 8-10 p.m. But this was a jump of 26 percent week to week (versus a 3.8/ 6 on March 11). And “The Biggest Loser” should have no trouble remaining filler for “The Voice” in between seasons.

Billed as the season-finale, drama “Deception” on NBC remained out of the competitive loop with a distant third-place 2.5/ 4 at 10 p.m. Comparably, that dropped from year-ago occupant “Smash” (4.9/ 8 on 3/19/12) by a considerable 49 percent. Don’t be fooled…”Deception” is over.

Over at CBS (and opposite “Dancing With the Stars”), “How I Met Your Mother” opened with a respectable 5.5/ 8 in the overnights at 8 p.m. (#2), which could still win the time period among adults 18-49. Next was “Rules of Engagement” (#3: 4.6/ 7 at 8:30 p.m.), which looks like it will be finally ending this spring, followed by “2 Broke Girls” (#2: 6.0/ 9) and compatible “Mike & Molly” (#2: 5.8/ 9) from 9-10 p.m. The next time you hear the expression “sophomore slump,” think of “2 Broke Girls” which seems to be grasping for cheap jokes way too early in its run.

“Hawaii Five-O” closed the night for the Eye net with a second-place 5.8/10 at 10 p.m., which fully maintained its “Mike & Molly” lead-in.

Over at Fox, it was business as usual care of veteran “Bones” (#3: 5.1/ 8) and freshman “The Following” (#4: 4.7/ 7), which were both officially renewed for next season.

In late night, Jay Leno on NBC led the 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. daypart, with a 2.8/ 7 in the overnights (3.3/ 8 to 2.2/ 6 by half-hour: +14 percent from the year-ago evening). Tied for No. 2 were David Letterman on CBS and Jimmy Kimmel on ABC, each with a 2.5/ 7 (and each 3.0/ 7 to 2.0/ 6 by half hour). Year-to-year, David Letterman declined by 19 percent, while younger skewing Jimmy Kimmel was off in the 11:30 p.m. half-hour by 14 percent from year-ago occupant “Nightline” (3.5/ 8 on 3/19/12). Regardless, the flood of younger viewers for ABC in the time period is one of the success stories of this season.

Jimmy Fallon on NBC (1.3/ 4 to 1.1/ 4) and Craig Ferguson on CBS (1.3/ 4 to 1.0/ 4) each averaged a 1.2/ 4 in the 12:30-1:30 a.m. daypart. “Nightline” at 12:30 a.m. was above average at a 1.5/ 5 (thanks to the stronger lead-in support from Jimmy Kimmel). And a repeat of Carson Daly closed the night for NBC with a 0.8/ 3 at 1:30 a.m. And there you have it…the Monday overnights.

WOW. Respectable numbers for DWTS considering it was seeing MAJOR Y/Y declines. Might have a chance at a 3+ demo which is something ABC has got to be happy with considering it was in the 2′s last fall.

Castle again reliable with or without DWTS.

I have to see D.L. and Lisa Vanderpump dance again next week. I wish they were doing a double elimination TONIGHT. I love The Judds, it was nice to see Naomi so nervous and touched for her daughter.
