-Ratings Breakdown:
It was an easy opening week victory for ABC, which bested the No. 2 network, CBS, by a hefty 89 percent in the overnights. Third overall was Fox, followed by NBC and, of course, The CW, which barely registered courtesy of “The Carrie Diaries” (#5: 0.8 rating/1 share) and a repeat of “Hart of Dixie” (#5: 0.4/ 1).
Before we begin our analysis, there are two immediate observations. The scenario will change next week once “The Voice” opens its new season on NBC (the network is counting the minutes at this point). And the gap among adults 18-49 will decrease once the fast affiliate results are released.
The new season of “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC was off and successfully running, with a 12.1/18 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, this dipped by only 10 percent from the year-ago season opener (13.4/20 on 3/19/12, which translated into 18.79 million viewers and a 3.5 rating/9 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day data). And the fluctuation in the four half-hours was only three-tenths of a rating point (peaking at a 12.3/18 at 9 p.m.). Congratulations, Tom Bergeron and company. And sorry D.L. Hughley, who trailed the pack with a mere 12 points from the judges in total.
“Castle,” which at this point can totally stand on its own, followed “Dancing With the Stars” with a dominant 7.7/13 in the overnights at 10 p.m. (which was six percent below the 8.2/14 one year earlier).
In season-finale news, two hours of “The Biggest Loser” on NBC paled in comparison to “Dancing With the Stars,” with a 4.8/ 7 from 8-10 p.m. But this was a jump of 26 percent week to week (versus a 3.8/ 6 on March 11). And “The Biggest Loser” should have no trouble remaining filler for “The Voice” in between seasons.
Billed as the season-finale, drama “Deception” on NBC remained out of the competitive loop with a distant third-place 2.5/ 4 at 10 p.m. Comparably, that dropped from year-ago occupant “Smash” (4.9/ 8 on 3/19/12) by a considerable 49 percent. Don’t be fooled…”Deception” is over.
Over at CBS (and opposite “Dancing With the Stars”), “How I Met Your Mother” opened with a respectable 5.5/ 8 in the overnights at 8 p.m. (#2), which could still win the time period among adults 18-49. Next was “Rules of Engagement” (#3: 4.6/ 7 at 8:30 p.m.), which looks like it will be finally ending this spring, followed by “2 Broke Girls” (#2: 6.0/ 9) and compatible “Mike & Molly” (#2: 5.8/ 9) from 9-10 p.m. The next time you hear the expression “sophomore slump,” think of “2 Broke Girls” which seems to be grasping for cheap jokes way too early in its run.
“Hawaii Five-O” closed the night for the Eye net with a second-place 5.8/10 at 10 p.m., which fully maintained its “Mike & Molly” lead-in.
Over at Fox, it was business as usual care of veteran “Bones” (#3: 5.1/ 8) and freshman “The Following” (#4: 4.7/ 7), which were both officially renewed for next season.
In late night, Jay Leno on NBC led the 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. daypart, with a 2.8/ 7 in the overnights (3.3/ 8 to 2.2/ 6 by half-hour: +14 percent from the year-ago evening). Tied for No. 2 were David Letterman on CBS and Jimmy Kimmel on ABC, each with a 2.5/ 7 (and each 3.0/ 7 to 2.0/ 6 by half hour). Year-to-year, David Letterman declined by 19 percent, while younger skewing Jimmy Kimmel was off in the 11:30 p.m. half-hour by 14 percent from year-ago occupant “Nightline” (3.5/ 8 on 3/19/12). Regardless, the flood of younger viewers for ABC in the time period is one of the success stories of this season.
Jimmy Fallon on NBC (1.3/ 4 to 1.1/ 4) and Craig Ferguson on CBS (1.3/ 4 to 1.0/ 4) each averaged a 1.2/ 4 in the 12:30-1:30 a.m. daypart. “Nightline” at 12:30 a.m. was above average at a 1.5/ 5 (thanks to the stronger lead-in support from Jimmy Kimmel). And a repeat of Carson Daly closed the night for NBC with a 0.8/ 3 at 1:30 a.m. And there you have it…the Monday overnights.
