-Ratings Breakdown:
The 45th Annual CMA Awards led ABC to a solid victory, with 16.32 million viewers and a 4.8 rating/12 share among adults 18-49 from 8-11 p.m. Comparably, that was right on track with the 16.49 million viewers and the 4.7/13 in the demo on the year-ago evening. Here is the half-hour overnight breakdown:

The 45th Annual CMA Awards
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 16.37 million (#1), A18-49: 4.4/12 (#1)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 17.20 million (#1), A18-49: 4.9/13 (#1)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 16.66 million (#1), A18-49: 4.9/12 (#1)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 16.50 million (#1), A18-49: 5.0/12 (#1)
10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 15.96 million (#1), A18-49: 4.9/12 (#1)
10:30 p.m. – Viewers: 15.21 million (#1), A18-49: 4.5/12 (#1)

ABC and the Country Music Association have extended their broadcast agreement through 2021, which includes the CMA Awards, the CMA Festival: Country’s Night to Rock and the CMA Country Christmas.

On Fox, two-hours of The X Factor finished third overall in total viewers, with 10.14 million viewers; and second among adults 18-49 with a healthy 3.7/10 in the demo. Compared to two episodes of Hell’s Kitchen on the year-ago evening (Viewers: 5.70 million; A18-49: 2.6/ 7 on 11/10/10), this was an increase of a hefty 5.44 million viewers and 42 percent among adults 18-49. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

The X Factor (Fox)
8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 9.61 million (#3), A18-49: 3.4/10 (#2)
8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 10.09 million (#3), A18-49: 3.7/10 (#2)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 10.42 million (#3), A18-49: 3.9/10 (#2)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 10.44 million (#3), A18-49: 4.0/10 (#2)

While The X Factor is not American Idol, it certainly has earned its recently announced renewal.

Over at CBS, perennial Survivor: South Pacific was on the map last night with 10.60 million viewers (#2) and a third-place 3.1/ 9 among adults 18-49, which was close to the year-ago edition in Nicaragua. But two tribal councils in one hour were completely rushed, with the big moment of the season (the reaction to Cochran’s flipping) barely visible. Next on the Eye net was underrated Criminal Minds (Viewers: #2, 11.31 million; A18-49: #3, 3.4/ 8 at 9 p.m.), followed by relocated CSI at a second-place finish in both total viewers (10.08 million) and adults 18-49 (2.5/ 7) at 10 p.m. Compared to failed year-ago occupant The Defenders (Viewers: 8.40 million; A18-49: 1.8/ 5 on 10/10/10), veteran CSI built by 1.68 million viewers and 39 percent in the demo. The question CBS will need to face this spring, of course, is if all three editions of CSI are worthy of another season.

On NBC, freshman sitcom Up All Night opened with a modest (and fourth-place) 4.79 million viewers and a 1.8/ 5 among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. A repeat of Up All Night followed with 3.51 million viewers (#4) and a 1.2/ 3 in the demo (#4) at 8:30 p.m. My personal suggestion to NBC would be to move the still potentially promising half-hour into the Thursday 8 p.m. anchor position (where current occupant Community remains a clinker).

Older-skewing Harry’s Law on NBC perked up to 7.05 million viewers (#4) at 9 p.m., but results among adults 18-49 were still lacking at a 1.3/ 3 (#4). Tired Law & Order: SVU capped off the evening with 6.64 million viewers (#3) and a 1.9/ 5 in the demo (#3) at 10 p.m. Year-ago occupant Law & Order: Los Angeles was similar at 6.80 million viewers and a 1.7/ 5 among adults 18-49 on 11/10/10.

A repeat of Ringer on The CW (Viewers: #5, 983,000; A18-49: #5, 0.4/ 1) led into 1.65 million viewers (#5) and a 0.7/ 2 among adults 18-49 (#5) for long in the tooth reality/competition America’s Next Top Model at 9 p.m. One year earlier, Top Model, which is taking a break this spring, was notably stronger at 2.69 million viewers and a 1.2/ 4 in the demo at 8 p.m. on 11/10/10.

Wow, ANTM lost 39% of its viewers and 41% of its demo year-to-year. The spring cycle might be its last.

P.S. There was a repeat of ANTM on at 8, not Ringer.

Go Harry’s Law!! Still dead. ;)

Excellent rating for CMA Awards.

Since this is NBC, 1.8 isn’t bad for Up All Night.

From Fox

Airing against a high-rated CMA Awards, the majority of broadcast shows posted declines last night. FOX ranked #2 for the night among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34 and teens.

· THE X FACTOR: 3.7/10 – holding up well given the direct music/performance show competition last night (down -8% in the core demo and only down -3% among Adults 18-34).

o NOTE: We expect THE X FACTOR to go up one or two tenths in the finals this afternoon.

o Last night’s THE X FACTOR built throughout the night and was up +18% in its last half-hour vs. its first among Adults 18-49 (half-hours: 3.4 > 3.7 > 3.9 > 4.0)

o THE X FACTOR was the second highest rated program of the night among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34 and Teens behind ABC’s CMA Awards.

Competition

ABC’s presentation of the 2011 CMA Awards posted a 4.8/12 from 8-11pm, up +2% from last year’s telecast (4.7/13 on 11/10/2010).

On CBS, Survivor: South Pacific (3.1/9) fell -14% from last week (3.6/10) to match its season low and remains off to the franchise’s worst fall performance ever, down -11% from its previous low through eight telecasts. Criminal Minds (3.4/8, down -8%) and CSI (2.5/7, down -7%) finished the night with season lows at 9pm and 10pm.

At 8p, NBC’s Up All Night (1.8/5) remained flat and matched last week’s season low. Following a repeat Up All Night (1.2/3) at 830p, Harry’s Law posted a 1.3/3 at 9pm, up +18% from last week. Law & Order: SVU (1.9/5, down -5%) closed out the night with its lowest original rating ever, and through seven telecasts is down -19% from its comparable performance last fall (2.1/6 vs. 2.6/7).

From NBC

At 8 p.m. ET, “Up All Night” (1.8/6 in adults 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall) is up 38 percent versus the 1.3 rating NBC averaged in this time period last season (“live plus same day,” non-sports), despite intense time-period competition that included Fox’s “X Factor,” CBS’s “Survivor” and ABC’s “CMA Awards.” Versus NBC’s 18-49 rating in the half-hour on the same night last year, “Up All Night” is up by 50 percent (1.8 vs. 1.2). Week to week, “Up All Night” is even in 18-49 rating (1.8 vs. 1.8) and up slightly in total viewers (4.791 million vs. 4.783 million)

Note that “Up All Night” has been adding 47 percent to these next-day “live plus same day” ratings when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results so far this season.

At 8:30 ET, an encore telecast of “Up All Night” averaged a 1.2/3 in adults 18-49 and 3.5 million viewers overall in a time period that featured competition from Fox’s “X Factor,” CBS’s “Survivor” and ABC’s “CMA Awards.” Week to week, the 8:30 “Up All Night” encore is even in 18-49 rating (1.2 vs. 1.2) and up 4 percent in total viewers (3.511 million vs. 3.382 million).

At 9 p.m. ET, “Harry’s Law” (1.3/3 in adults 18-49, 7.1 million viewers overall) is up week to week by 18 percent in 18-49 rating to match its season high. In total viewers, “Harry Law” so far this fall has delivered NBC’s seven biggest audiences in the time period on an in-season Wednesday since February 9. Versus NBC’s total-viewer average in the time slot last season, this week’s “Harry’s Law” is up 23 percent (7.054 million vs. 5.752 million, “live plus same day,” non-sports).

Note that “Harry’s Law” has been adding 40 percent to these next-day “live plus same day” ratings when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results so far this season.

At 10 p.m. ET, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (1.9/5 in 18-49, 6.6 million viewers overall) built on its lead-in by 54 percent in 18-49 rating while competing programming on ABC and CBS was down versus 9-10 p.m. results.

Note that “Law & Order: SVU” has been adding 45 percent to these next-day “live plus same day” ratings when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results so far this season.

In Late-Night Metered Markets Wednesday night:

In Nielsen’s 56 metered markets, household results were: “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” 3.1/8; CBS’s “Late Show with David Letterman,” 2.6/7; and ABC’s combo of “Nightline,” 3.8/9; and “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” 1.8/6.

In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, adult 18-49 results were: “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” 0.9/4; “Late Show,” 0.8/4; “Nightline,” 1.2/5; and “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” 0.6/3.

I quite agree. “Community” performs poorly on Thursday 8pm. Maybe they should move “Up All Night” there. Overall NBC should reconsider its schedule. The strongest scripted drama series is “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” with an average of 7.49 million viewers and a 2.2/6 among adults 18-49. If I were NBC I would switch the schedule from Monday until Friday like this:

MONDAY
8pm “The Sing-Off” (only a few episodes left)/”The Voice”
10pm “Harry’s Law”/”Smash”

TUESDAY
8pm “The Biggest Loser”
10pm “Parenthood”

WEDNESDAY
8pm “Grimm”
9pm “Awake”
10pm “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”

THURSDAY
8pm “Up All Night”
8:30pm “Parks and Recreation”
9pm “The Office”
9:30pm “Bent”
10pm “30 Rock”
10:30pm “Community”

FRIDAY
8pm “Chuck”
9pm “Prime Suspect”
10pm “Dateline NBC”

Ouch for “Top Model,” only NBC tops CW in desperation when watching at the overnight numbers. The spin from NBC is getting ridiculous and the ‘Live +7 ratings bumps us X% higher’ excuse is too thin and transparent to buy.

No. Not as long as they are strong in the International market. once that goes, then they will be gone.

The question CBS will need to face this spring, of course, is if all three editions of CSI are worthy of another season.

OK Marc, explain to me why “SVU” (a show I love because I’ve been and always will be a diehard “L&O” whore) isn’t in the ‘Losers’ or at least ‘Tired’ category. This is a show that used to do 2.X and even an occasional 3.0 in the demo the past couple of seasons, but that on its own accord has fallen to below 2.0 for a new episode (during Sweeps month no less). If “Up All Night” is a loser at 8PM with a 1.8 then “Harry’s Law” and “SVU” should also be losers (the former because it squanders the “UAN” block’s demos down to 1.3 and the latter because of its lost pedigree as an NBC ratings star and its now at 1.9… breaking the 2.0 threshold for “SVU” should categorize it as a loser, IMHO).
