Ignited by an encore telecast of NCIS, CBS led this final Tuesday in December with 4.61 million more viewers and an eight percent advantage among adults 18-9 over second-place ABC, according to the fast affiliate data from Nielsen Media Research. The NCIS encore was the most-watched program and highest rated in the demo for the evening with 12.53 million viewers and a 2.1 rating/6 share among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. That led into older-skewing The 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors at 8.35 million viewers (#2) and a 1.1/ 3 in the demo (#2t) from 9-11 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows:

The 34th Annual Kennedy Center Honors (CBS)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 9.03 million (#1), A18-49: 1.3/ 4 (#2)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 8.00 million (#1), A18-49: 1.0/ 3 (#2t)

The honorees last night were Barbara Cooks, Neil Diamond, Yo-Yo Ma, Sonny Rollins and Meryl Streep. The Kennedy Center Honors was the only original show last night.

ABC populated the evening with encore telecasts of Last Man Standing (two episodes – Viewers: #2, avg. 5.89 million; A18-49: #2, avg. 1.5/ 4 from 8-9 p.m.), The Middle (Viewers: #2, 4.75 million; A18-49: #1, 1.4/ 4 at 9 p.m.), Suburgatory (Viewers: #2, 4.06 million; A18-49: #1, 1.2/ 3 at 9:30 p.m.) and Body of Proof (Viewers: #2, 5.13 million; A18-49: #1, 1.1/ 3 at 10 p.m.). Keep in mind, new ABC sitcom Work It debuts in the Tuesday 8:30 p.m. time period into Celebrity Wife Swap at 9 p.m. beginning on January 3. The live Dancing With the Stars Results Show returns in March.

Elsewhere, NBC aired an encore of two-hour special, The Biggest Loser: Where Are They Now? (Viewers: #3, 2.98 million; A18-49: #3, 0.9/ 3 from 8-10 p.m.), followed by a repeat of Parenthood at 2.03 million viewers (#3) and a 0.7/ 2 among adults 18-49 (#3) at 10 p.m. Fox filled the night with repeats of fading Glee (Viewers: #4, 2.18 million; A18-49: #4, 0.7/ 2), New Girl (Viewers: #4, 2.78 million; A18-49: #3, 1.0/ 3) and Raising Hope (Viewers: #4, 2.69 million; A18-49: #4, 0.9/ 2). As a reminder, Tuesday will remain intact on Fox with Glee, New Girl and Raising Hope until March 6 when encore telecasts of New Girl opens the evening into the return of sitcom Breaking In at 8:30 p.m. Megan Mullally joins the cast of Breaking In for this upcoming second season.

Based on the numbers New Girl has been getting in repeats I think that is a huge mistake that Fox is making. I have a feeling this will change before March.

Those ABC numbers look high to me for repeats, particularly the Last Man Standing episodes. Any pre-emptions happening?

TV By the Numbers has a list of the top cable networks in primetime (Monday-Sunday, 8-11 p.m. ET) for the year 2011 (the numbers in parenthesis are how the networks rank when the entire day is calculated)…

1. USA Network (2)
2. ESPN (8)
3. TNT (5)
4. Fox News Channel (6)
5. History Channel (9)
6. TBS (10)
7. A&E (11)
8. FX (12)
9. ABC Family (13)
10. Nick at Nite (3)
11. Adult Swim (4)
12. Syfy Channel (25)
13. Discovery (16)
14. HGTV (14)
15. AMC (18)
16. Food Network (17)
17. MTV (20)
18. TruTV (15)
19. Lifetime (19)
20. TLC (26)
21. Comedy Central (24)
22. Spike (23)
23. Nick Jr. (21)
24. BET (29)
25. TV Land (22)
26. Bravo (34)
27. Hallmark Channel (28)
28. MSNBC (30)
29. CNN (27)
30. E! Entertainment (33)
31. Lifetime Movie Network (32)
32. Animal Planet (35)
33. ESPN2 (37)
34. VH1 (40)
35. Investigative Discovery (ID) (31)
36. HLN (36)
37. Travel Channel (39)
38. National Geographic Channel (-)
39. Oxygen (-)
40. CMT (-)

The list only includes advertiser supported networks, so Disney Channel (which I thought was advertiser supported, but I guess is not) is not included.

When the entire programming day is calculated, not surprisingly, Nickelodeon easily tops the list. Other cable networks in the Top 30 for the entire programming day include Cartoon Network (#7) and WGN America (#38).
