Good Afternoon America – Week Three - TV Media Insights - TV Ratings & News - Network TV Show Reviews and Daily Ratings

Good Afternoon America – Week Three

August 2, 2012 by Marc Berman in Highlights with 56 Comments

The news remained grim for week three of last-place ABC daytime entry Good Afternoon America, which dipped to 1.70 million viewers and continues to lose about one-half of the year-ago One Life to Live audience, according to the Live Plus Same Day data from Nielsen. It will be interesting to see what happens when veteran General Hospital steps into the 2 p.m. ET hour this fall. Elsewhere, The View on ABC is down but still tops; second-place The Talk on CBS was close to year-ago levels; and third-place The Chew on ABC is no All My Children.

For a closer look, here are the results for the quartet (with change versus the comparable year-ago period in parentheses):

-Total Viewers:
The View (ABC): 3.14 million (-15), The Talk (CBS): 2.20 (- 1), The Chew (ABC); 2.12 (-18 from All My Children), Good Afternoon America (ABC): 1.70 (-39 from One Life to Live)

-Women 25-54:

The View (ABC): 716,000 (-25), The Talk (CBS): 594,000 (- 9), The Chew (ABC): 471,000 (-32), Good Afternoon America (ABC): 404,000 (-50)

-Women 18-49:
The View (ABC): 556,000 (-23), The Talk (CBS): 442,000 (-15), The Chew (ABC); 356,000 (-32), Good Afternoon America (ABC): 293,000 (-57)

-Women 18-34:

The View (ABC): 200,000 (-12), The Talk (ABC): 132,000 (-10), The Chew (ABC): 129,000 (-17), Good Afternoon America (ABC): 106,000 (-50)

We do not want reality in the afternoon, and the ratings demonstrate it!

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/dueler312/ Jason

Nor do we want talk shows, cooking shows, or lifestyle shows!

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/carolc/ carolc

Keep the good news coming, Marc. Viewers know what they want and it’s NOT reality/talk shows.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/filmkr27/ filmkr27

GAA is holding on to most of the chew’s audience. I too would love the soaps to come back, but that ship has sailed, but isn’t a better reference point to also include that it is doing better than the Revolution?

    • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/amcoltl6870/ Troy Turner

      Filmkr,

Using AMC and OLTL as reference points are still valid, as it’s been less than a year since both shows left the air. And nothing here comes as a surprise, as viewers continue to demonstrate that daytime drama is tho ONLY option for ABC

      • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/rob/ Rob

Troy, even if The Chew was to get cancelled (something that won’t happen anyway), your soaps still wouldn’t be back on the air.

So get over your ridiculous cancelled soaps, support GH so that it doesn’t get cancelled too and stop hating The Chew like an immature 2 year old.

        • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/ctwildheart/ CTwildheart

Rob…how can you say get over your cancelled soaps and in the next breath say support GH? Are you a soap watcher? I don’t think so.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/camille/ camille

Third week and GAA is down in Viewers 50% from OLTL from last year to date. Now that speaks volumes in itself. Across the board ABC is way down compared to last year. The only show that shows a less signifiacant drop is The Talk by 1% from last year. The message keeps getting louder and louder ABC Viewers know what they want to see and can’t be forced to watch. Needless to say Marc thank you and I am still smiling.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/edna-barefoot/ Edna Barefoot

GAA will never replace OLTL. Sorry ABC but it is your fault for ignoring the viewers. We want OLTL back!!

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/yankeesrj12/ yankeesrj12

Those are still solid numbers for The Chew.

Good Afternoon America’s low still hasn’t reached The Revolution’s high, but it’s getting there.

    • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/amcoltl6870/ Troy Turner

Solid numbers for the Chew, you say? Then tell me why The Chew’s numbers haven’t beaten AMC even ONCE?

      • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/rob/ Rob

What are you blabbing about Troy? The Chew HAS beaten AMC on a number of occasions, more specifically during the weeks of November 28, 2011 , December 5, 2011, February 20, 2012, and some other weeks.

You hate The Chew so much that you’re not spreading lies in front of the world wide web. Too bad for you that The Chew is not going anywhere anytime soon.

        • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/rob/ Rob

My last post should have read as follow: “you’re now spreading lies in front of the world wide web” (instead of “you’re not spreading lies in front of the world wide web”)

          • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/amcoltl6870/ Troy Turner

You’re the one spreading lies Rob-I keep an eye on the ratings every week, and The Chew has NEVER beaten AMC. Simple as that

          • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/phxcwgrl2002/ phxcwgrl2002

I agree with Rob. Troy I want to know who side are you on? Troy I get what you are saying about the soaps not coming back but really that is not up to you.
It’s up to ABC Correct. SO STOP BASHING PEOPLE’S COMMENTS and read your own because you make no sense. If you don’t like what people say then leave it alone and move on. They are just comments they did nothing wrong.

And stop bitching and just support General Hospital. ABC has made a big mistake by taking our soaps.

We are trying to make them realize that. The more support we give for OLTL and AMC maybe ABC will see they made a big mistake they have made.

The fans have accepted the soaps are gone but we don’t have to like it or forget it.

If ABC brings our soaps back the fans will have made history. Who is to say the actors will even come back but anything is possible at this point you never know until it happens.

They all have other jobs and contracts but anything is possible with soap actors.

Don’t bash people for their comments. Remember we need to stop bitching and just support GH and the other soaps. just saying….Rob I got your back for sure.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/seahawkmom/ Seahawkmom

Thank You Marc I love to see them crash. Watch only GH on ABC.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/mushu_jj/ mushu_jj

I think if ABC were to expand GMA, they would simply add another hour in the morning hours (perhaps even as late at 11am). Then they could just give an hour back to affiliates in the afternoon. The main show holding that option back is Live with Kelly but they could even shift her and the View back an hour each to make it work. All in all, the soap opera era is about over. There simply aren’t enough viewers to support the expense. These reality and talk options are maybe only half as possible, but they cost about 1/4 to make so ABC is still making more and that’s the bottom line.

    • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/garianne/ Anne

NBC did this, when they expanded The Today Show to fill the entire morning. Talk radio, with pictures. Boring!!!!! The View is too strong in it’s time slot. Moving it might damage it’s ratings. No, the real problem is the new replacement shows. None of them have the individual appeal that the soap line-up had. Even with cheaper production costs, they are not drawing in a large enough audience to interest advertisers. ABC needs to reexamine the stats they used to decimate their afternoon line-up. Someone, somewhere, screwed up. The soaps were far more popular than the network realized, and now they are really paying for their mistake. Wake up ABC/D. You need to bring bck the cancelled soaps in one form or another. Even repeats of AMC and OLTL would do better in their former time slots than the replacement shows have been doing so far.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/okicarol/ okicarol

NOOOO -the writing is on the wall –The day is coming –GMA 24 hours a day on ABC. I am not watching —We want our daytime dramas back A.S.A.P.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/lindseyh/ LindseyH

I will continue to boycott ABC day and night except for the General Hospital hour. Thanks for keeping us informed, Marc!

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/ctwildheart/ CTwildheart

I am happy to hear this because it gives GH some breathing room. But – The Spew is pulling in enough ratings for ABC/D to count it a success. Because of the lower production costs, the lost viewers don’t matter to them. I am hopeful that General Hospital may stay – but we need them to sell the rights to AMC and OLTL when they revert back from PP so someone else may put them back into production. Even if they are smaller casts and shorter length – I want my soaps any way I can get them! Thanks for keeping us ‘in the know’ Marc!

    • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/rob/ Rob

The point I was trying to make to Troy and now to you as well, CTwildheart, is that AMC and OLTL are NEVER coming back. Not on ABC, not on any network. No cancelled soap opera in history has ever been brought back to life. AMC and OLTL are no exception.

Selling the rights of AMC and OLTl would be the stupidest thing for ABC thing to do and that’s why it will NEVER happen.

So instead of wasting your time trying to reviving soap operas that have 0 chance of ever getting revived, you should instead concentrate your energy in supporting GH so that it doesn’t get the same fate. Simple as this.

      • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/amcoltl6870/ Troy Turner

We will FORCE AMC and OLTL back into production. Don’t you get it yet?

        • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/rob/ Rob

HA HA HA HA HA HA

          Thanks for the laugh Troy.

    • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/rob/ Rob

BTW, The Chew did not cancelled your stupid soap opera. It’s ABC that did.

So grow up with your “Spew” name-calling. Only someone in diapers would use that word.

What were those representatives of ABC Daytime thinking? First, they cancelled “All My Children” and “One Life To Live”, then they put out cheap shows that wouldn’t attract a large audience. I hope they realize that they’ve made a big mistake.;(

Troy, you live in another galaxy if you say that The Chew never did beat once AMC. It did both in total numbers and in the demos, although I admit not too often. The info is available right here on Marc Berman’s website.

For example, the week of December 5, 2011, The Chew had 2.38 million viewers compared to 2.29 million viewers for AMC the year before.

    Source: http://www.tvmediainsights.com/2011/12/monday-december-19-2011/

If you prefer an example with the demos, I can give you one too. During the week of June 18, 2012. The Chew had higher ratings with the W18-34 demo than AMC the year before .

    Source: http://www.tvmediainsights.com/2012/06/network-daytime-talk-show-scorecard/

So what do you have to say for yourself now Troy?

Keep spreading your lies and entertain me with your cartoonish posts about taking down The Chew, or forcing the production of AMC and OLTL. Now I know that if I have a bad day at work, I just need to come on this site and read your posts to have a good laugh and release some stress.

I’m sorry Rob, you’re the one who’s lying here. The Chew has NEVER beaten AMC’s numbers, that’s an incontrovertable fact. We that have been fighting the fight since 4/14/11 have a responsibility NOT to spread misinformation. I’m sorry if the truth hurts-but it is what it is. What is YOUR agenda…

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/amcoltl6870/ Troy Turner

…and by the way, we WILL take down The Chew, it’ll just take a little longer

    • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/rob/ Rob

I don’t know in what state you live in Troy. But here in Georgia, 2.38 million is considered to be a higher number than 2.29 million.

And even if you had been right about The Chew having never beaten AMC once, the fact is that The Chew still brings more profits to ABC than AMC did. So ABC is still a big winner with The Chew even if it has fewer viewers than AMC. If you think that ABC is going to give up on the dozens of millions of dollars it is saving by having The Chew on its lineup just so that it can get back the 300 000 viewers it lost by pulling off AMC, then you better think again.

And you can continue to entertain me with your posts about taking down The Chew and forcing down the production of AMC and OLTL. But it doesn’t change reality. The entire world is laughing at your posts and you don’t even realize it.

      • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/amcoltl6870/ Troy Turner

Oh, here you go again with the profits again-is that the best you can do…Where is your so called proof….People have been using that as a dodge since September, but can’t come up with a single number to back them up. Why is that… Because there is NO SUCH NUMBER. Sorry, Rob, you’re just outgunned here

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/colleen1770/ Colleen1770

It is just time for ABC to get back to doing what they did best and that was their soaps. I watched ABC for years now it only comes on for GH. I can see that when GH moves to 2pm Est. that Katie Couric is going to end up at the bottom of the rating game.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/stephen-parker/ Stephen Parker

ABC, are you suicidal? Heed the following advice: Get the tabloid garbage OFF the air and reinstate a fiction storytelling format for the entire afternoon. Even Ellen can be trying and shallow at times. The junk you are peddling currently (The Chew, Good Afternoon America) will not succeed in rivaling, much less surpassing, the ratings of One Life to Live.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/mary22/ mary22

Thank Marc once again! If only the powers to be at ABC would wake up and smell the coffee. Bring back the soaps!

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/rob/ Rob

    Troy

I don’t need to bring you proof. It’s just common sense. If ABC wasn’t satisfied with The Chew, it would have cancelled it just as it did with The Revolution. I think you’re in a better position than anyone to know that ABC is not afraid to cancel TV shows.

And what good would it make to bring you proof when I know that you would found an excuse to say it’s not true as you did by insisting that The Chew has never beaten AMC when it was reported on this very site that it sometimes did.

You are biased and you will always spin everything in favor of your soap operas no matter what happens. Me, on the other hand, I am objective. I acknowledge that The Revolution was a flop. But I also recognize that The Chew and The Talk are doing well enough for ABC and CBS to not losing sleep at night for dumping AMC and ATWT.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/amcoltl6870/ Troy Turner

Rob, you are making this just TOO easy. You’re just like the rest of the soap-hating crowd out there, making outlandish statements without any proof to back them up. At least you TRIED to back a statement up with numbers with the Neilsens-it’s a lie, but you tried nonetheless. Why not now… Just WHAT are you afraid of… Where is your proof… You know where I am, I’ll wait…

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/rob/ Rob

So Troy, The Chew beating AMC on a few occasions is a lie? Then care to explain these few sentences from Marc Berman’s own words.

“Recent ABC daytime talk show The Chew has settled in, no doubt, with 2.51 million viewers for the holiday week of Nov. 22. The positive news was surpassing year-ago time period occupant All My Children (2.44 million) in total audience.” (Marc Berman, TV Media Insights, December 5, 2011)

“The Chew had slightly more total viewers, with 2.33 million this week versus 2.30 million for All My Children one year earlier.” (Marc Berman, TV Media Insights, December 12, 2011)

“Mirroring one week earlier, The Chew had a slight advantage in total viewers over All My Children in the year-ago week (2.38 vs. 2.29 million), but All My Children beat The Chew by one-tenth of a rating point in each of the three surveyed female demos.” (Marc Berman, TV Media Insights, December 19, 2011)

If you prefer an example with the demos instead of total viewers, I can give you one too Troy.

“Based on the Live Plus Same Day ratings for the week of Feb. 20, The Chew rose to a five-week high in total viewers (2.44 million: down three percent from All My Children one year earlier), while actually surpassing the now defunct daytime serial by 25 percent among women 18-34 (0.5/ 3 vs. 0.4/ 3).” (Marc Berman, TV Media Insights, March 1, 2012)

So much for you lies about The Chew having never beaten AMC’s numbers once. Like I said before Troy, you are biased because you only believe what you choose to believe and deny any information that doesn’t follow your agenda. Unfortunately for you Troy, you can’t fool anyone because all what people need to do is access the past ratings on this website to see that The Chew has beaten AMC in the past.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/amcoltl6870/ Troy Turner

Congratulations on ducking my question, Rob-that’s not what I meant, and you know it. By the way, I’m still waiting for proof on these “millions of dollars” that ABC is supposedly saving on a show that’s NEVER beaten AMC’s numbers, despite what you claim.

    • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/rob/ Rob

I provided you evidence that The Chew has beaten AMC in the past, an information that is available on this website and that EVERYBODY has access to. Yet (and as I expected you would), you’re still denying it because you don’t like what you see. I was right all along about you Troy, you live in another planet. And you wonder why I’m not giving you evidence about the profits. Why should I when I know that you will say it’s not true.

If all soap fans are like you Troy, then I can see why soaps are dying.

      • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/amcoltl6870/ Troy Turner

Oh, Rob-you doth protest too much. I stand behind what I said before, it is a flat-out LIE that The Chew has beaten AMC’s numbers, I know it, you know it. And you use that as a dodge not to provide info about the profits… How pathetic… I suspect the real reason that you won’t provide the info is that you don’t have the guts to do so…

By the way, if I’m the one that’s lying, how come noone is jumping to your defense… This is a public forum, after all…

        • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/rob/ Rob

          Troy

It doesn’t matter if you want to believe that The Chew has never beaten AMC.

ABC execs know the truth about the ratings and they’re the ones that are making the decisions about what shows get to air on their network, not you

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/shannonb/ ShannonB

It doesn’t matter what fans (or lack thereof) call a show…point is, if they aren’t watching, the numbers will be down. And down they are…the chew, the revolution and now gaa(g) are all suffering from viewer backlash against abc. Viewers don’t want to see people cooking, eating, dieting, cleaning, confessing, exercising, shopping or talking. This is all stuff we do in our everyday lives. We want an escape from that, and THIS is why we love our soaps, and why, despite naysayers, we will not give up.

By the way, I’m still waiting on proof about the profits, thanks…

      • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/rob/ Rob

Knowing how crazy you soap fans are, I wouldn’t be surprised that in 20 years from now you’re still trying to figure out what to do to get AMC and OLTL back in production.

You soap fans? Boy, if that’s not a derogatory statement…Are we supposed to “know our place”, too?

Just give us back OLTL and we will give you back your ratings! Simple fix!

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/colleen1770/ Colleen1770

General Hospital will do fine in the 2pm EST time slot, because the fans want it to be saved. The sad part is these same fans will not be watching anything before it or after it due to ABCD’s disregard for their feelings and programming wants. I can’t wait to see the ratings for Katie Couric’s new show. I can’t believe she is even taking this risk. Obviously they believe that moving GH will satisfy us and we will again support their other programming, but that will not be happening. I have said time and time again that the ABCD execs need to go on the view and publicly apologize to all the fans for their bad decisions and announce that OLTL is coming back. That is the only way to move forward. They have to have lost money on The Revolution and GAA’s low ratings must be hurting their wallets.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/valesnc/ Valesnc

Personally .. I think they should perhaps make a Soap channel for all those that wish to what those types of shows. Leave the daytime to diversity, so we all can see something other than tired old soaps. I am very happy to see shows like The Chew, Good Afternoon America, I was hoping it would stay. Sorry that a soap it not real enough for me, so maybe you should request a channel just for your soaps? Problem solved, they could bring them all back for you.
