HANDICAPPING THE NEW FOX SERIES
THE MOB DOCTOR (Fox) – Monday 9 p.m.
Jordana Spiro (My Boys) plays as a thoracic surgeon in Chicago who is forced to moonlight as a doctor for the mafia when she finds herself on the wrong end of a mob debt.
-The Lead-in: Bones
-The Competition: Dancing With the Stars (ABC), 2 Broke Girls (CBS) and Mike & Molly (CBS), The Voice (NBC), Gossip Girl (CW)
-Who Was at the Panel:
Jordana Spiro, William Forsythe, Floriana Lima, Zach Gilford, Jesse Lee Soffer, James Carpinello, Jaime Lee Kirchner, Zeljko Ivanek, Wendy Makkena; and executive producers Josh Berman and Carla Kettner.
-The Scoop:
Josh Berman on the concept of Mob Doctors:
“We went to do some research and we found a book called Il Dottore, which this whole series is loosely inspired by. Sony bought the rights for us based on a real mob doctor. And the more we dug, we found out the doctors to the mob are more motivated by greed. They get seduced by the mob world. It’s not because of the reasons we have in our pilot, but I think we’ve kind of flipped that and hopefully we’re a little bit more idealized version of the mob doctor. But who knows what the character of Grace will be seduced by in the future.”
-The Reality:
If counter-programming was the only benchmark, The Mob Doctor could be a good option, particularly out of veteran Bones (which always manages to deliver no matter where it airs). But fierce competition makes the Monday 9 p.m. hour one of the most competitive in primetime, and higher-profile The Following with Kevin Bacon is waiting in the midseason wings. Unless viewers tire of Dancing With the Stars, The Voice and CBS’ new combination of 2 Broke Girls and Mike & Molly, The Mob Doctor does not stand a chance.
-Chance of Survival for Mob Doctor (Based on 1-1 to 10-1 odds):
8-1

I’ll be watching as I do watch Bones (which can’t possibly be around much longer going in to its EIGHTH season). It did go down a bit hitting low 2′s high 1s in the demo so who knows.
Plus we still don’t know how well/not well CBS’s drastic comedy move on Monday will work. I haven’t heard the first good thing about Partners so CBS may suffer a slight set back in the numbers though not terrible. Dancing of course wil funnel in the most viewers and the Voice the Demo.
