Good Afternoon America Disappoints in Week Two

July 26, 2012 by marcberman in Highlights with 27 Comments

THE PM VERSION OF THE AM FRANCHISE IS NOT DELIVERING

The news was not positive in week two for Good Afternoon America on ABC. Based on the Live Plus Same Day ratings from Nielsen for the week of July 16, GAA was close to modest first week levels. It finished fourth among the quartet of network daytime talkers in three of the four surveyed categories (excluding women 18-34), and dropped from year-ago occupant One Life to Live by 36 percent in total viewers and demographically by as much as 48 percent among women 18-49. While this was an improvement from recent occupant The Revolution, it is still a major disappointment. And there is no reason to believe it will last past the initial nine-week order.

The moral of this week’s story: some shows are a better fit in the AM than the PM.

For a closer look, here are the results for the quartet:

-Total Viewers:
The View (ABC): 3.25 million, The Chew (ABC); 2.17, The Talk (CBS): 2.02, Good Afternoon America (ABC): 1.79

-Women 18-49:
The View (ABC): 582,000, The Chew (ABC); 413,000, The Talk (CBS): 395,000, Good Afternoon America (ABC): 346,000

-Women 25-54:
The View (ABC): 731,000, The Talk (CBS): 555,000, The Chew (ABC): 536,000, Good Afternoon America (ABC): 435,000

-Women 18-34:
The View (ABC): 215,000, The Chew (ABC): 168,000, Good Afternoon America (ABC): 142,000, The Talk (CBS): 102,000

Hopefully the dismal ratings will demonstrate this is not the daytime programming viewers want and ensure General Hospital’s continued survival.

Will ABCD ever listen. We won’t be trained to watch trash no matter how hard they try. I think WE the fans are doing the training. ABCD is just very hard to teach. People know what they like & crap ain’t it! If they bring back OLTL & AMC and keep GH ABCD will be back on top.

    • annbonariJul 26, 2012 at 11:10 pm

Nope Edna, they won’t listen to the viewers but the funniest thing ever is when the execs wanted to make a name for themselves, they didn’t quiet want this…….Good job soap fans keep banning these idiots out of a job….They have their finger so far from the pulse of what day time viewers wants that it’s comical that they keep trying and trying…Waste that good cash waste it while we laugh in all their faces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. wmzrazJul 26, 2012 at 8:14 pm

    ABC, we want Soaps!

ANd the moral of the whole story is, Don’t mess with the shows people love, ABC, mainly our soaps.

The moral of this week’s story: some shows are a better fit in the AM than the PM. ——-LOL. Daytime dramas are a better fit for the AM and the PM.

      Marc-you nailed it, lol-thanks again

We’ve been trying to tell ABC for months to bring our soaps back. They need to get smart and put our shows back on. We’re not gonna be watching your stupid Katie Couric show either.

Thank you, Marc, for this article. I don’t think any soap fan is surprised. GAA can’t hold a candle to One Life To Live – nothing can. If another network/station was able to obtain the rights to both All My Children and One Life To Live, that station’s ratings would go through the roof and prove to ABC what a horrible mistake they made.

Thank you Marc for once again putting a smile on my face. Once again the ratings prove ABC was wrong in their programming decisions, and Soapers were right all along… Question remains, when are they going to get it???

  9. bcoleman13Jul 26, 2012 at 9:05 pm

Thank you Marc for this article! Question is, when will ABCD give the viewers what they want? It’s the only way they will ever have any real ratings. Give us back our Soaps and don’t even think about messing with GH! ABCD will continue to fail and fail until they give us what we want and they deserve too! OLTL4EVER!

Once again, ABC (a.k.a. Already Been Canceled in my house, except for GH), should be keeping its eyeballs on its own mistakes and bring back the soaps. We all knew that GAA would never hold a candle to One Life to Live. It is such a shame that they could not see this coming.

    • Barb HermanJul 26, 2012 at 11:25 pm

AMEN! The ‘suits’ in NYC have no clue about the people who actually WATCH their shows.

  11. slj730Jul 26, 2012 at 11:00 pm

Bring back Love in the Afternoon ABC, and your ratings would not be such a struggle each week.

  12. annbonariJul 26, 2012 at 11:13 pm

    Dumbass execs at ABC…..We won’t budge FOOLS…….BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  13. ShannonBJul 26, 2012 at 11:19 pm

Thanks for continuing to keep us in the loop, Marc. As Todd Manning so wonderfuly said today, “the world needs another magazine like daytime needs another talk show…”

  14. Barb HermanJul 26, 2012 at 11:23 pm

Anyone surprised by this? I doubt it. Good Afternoon America is a rehashing of GMA with more ‘fluff’ added (boooooring). America wants our Soaps back!!!

  15. LindseyHJul 26, 2012 at 11:27 pm

Sorry, I’m not surprised. ABC should have left things alone. I will continue to boycott everything except the General Hospital hour.

  16. susanmzJul 27, 2012 at 2:21 am

What sort of ratings should drivel get?

  17. filmkr27Jul 27, 2012 at 2:51 am

I think when compared to the revolution, it is doing very well. I wish that GAA is more like the morning program with news in the beginning of the hour. There are a lot of guests on the show that they don’t advertise.

    • Troy TurnerJul 27, 2012 at 3:21 am

Filmkr, while you are correct that GAA is doing better than the departed Revolution, it is STILL running one-third below of what OLTL did. This is CONTINUING to show that viewers on ABC will accept NOTHING but daytime drama during the afternoon. In addition, it appears that ABC’s apparent plan to replace GH with GAA come fall 13 would be an unwise one, indeed

  18. moshane58Jul 27, 2012 at 3:22 am

I don’t know why anyone would want another talk show to do good. There on all day everywhere. How many times do you have to listen to someone promoting there movie, book, diet,or lifestyle. If its not talk its cooking show.Daytime has become just plain out boring. The only time I turn it on one of the big 4 networks is the first part of Today shpw for breaking news then go to cable until gh.I am so burn out on talk shows.Same gossip and stuff on all of them,Like watching the same rerun all day long.

  19. marang918Jul 27, 2012 at 4:18 am

AND THIS IS A SURPRISE …..WHY???? WE TOLD YOU NO SOAPS….NO ABC/D!!!

  20. MungaJul 27, 2012 at 11:05 am

Quit wasting time and money with these foolish shows and return OLTL and leave GH alone, thank you.

  21. nmelmanJul 27, 2012 at 6:12 pm

Everyone knew that this would happen except the high paid idiots at ABC/D. They will never figure it out. We do not want more talk, news, or reality in the daytime much less primetime where they try like crazy to push it down our throats. Unfortunately for ABC there are many other choices to watch that actually have shows to watch not the crap and junk that ABC thinks we want to watch. Heads need to roll and they need to sell the rights to our soaps now. ABC has lost millions of viewers and they are basically saying they do not care. Get real ABC.

  22. cassiehicks89Jul 27, 2012 at 11:17 pm

The lower ratings of “Good Afternoon, America”-they’re no surprise to me. As far as I can tell, it will go off the air come September.:)

  23. evab1234Aug 8, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Yes, p,ease bring back AMC, OLTL and keep GH. I don.’t really care Bout all these talk shows, I only watch Kelly Live.
