Network Daytime Talk Show Scorecard

OUTSIDE OF THE VIEW, IT IS CONTINUED WOES FOR ABC

The View on ABC dominated the week of August 6, of course…that is not about to change. But ABC’s The Chew continues to bleed from year-ago occupant All My Children by hefty proportions, while a slightly improved week four of Good Afternoon America, also on the alphabet net, trailed One Life To Live by as much as 66 percent in women 18-49, according to the Live Plus Same Day data from Nielsen. The Talk on CBS was also down year-to-year, but the losses were not as significant.

For a closer look, here are the results for each show (with change versus the comparable year-ago time period in parentheses):

-Total Viewers:

The View (ABC): 2.42 million (-11), The Talk (CBS): 1.98 (- 2), The Chew (ABC); 1.94 (-24 from All My Children), Good Afternoon America (ABC): 1.42 (-51 from One Life to Live)

-Women 25-54:

The View (ABC): 553,000 (-21), The Talk (CBS): 523,000 (- 6), The Chew (ABC): 434,000 (-44), Good Afternoon America (ABC): 334,000 (-62)

-Women 18-49:
The View (ABC): 464,000 (- 5), The Talk (CBS): 377,000 (-12), The Chew (ABC); 337,000 (-42), Good Afternoon America (ABC): 256,000 (-66)

-Women 18-34:
The View (ABC): 183,000 (+11), The Chew (ABC): 125,000 (-30), The Talk (CBS): 96,000 (-27), Good Afternoon America (ABC): 93,000 (-60)

Happy that the ratings for GAA continue to remain low. Hopefully this will mean General Hospital will remain as ABC needs to realize that their most loyal viewers want soaps in the afternoon.

Thank you Marc for this information. It is quite comforting to see the second attempt at replacing One Life to Live is also failing to bring up Daytime ABC’s ratings. Love in the Afternoon is what viewers want. The ratings support that. Hopefully ABC will continue with their last remaining soap, General Hospital. It is a shame that they do not capitalize on what they own, the two soaps that were canceled in 2011. Ratings would likely go back up on a whole for that portion of network airtime.

Thanks, Marc, for keeping us abreast of the latest daytime ratings. Glad to see that the replacement shows continue to do poorly.

I’m trying to stop laughing long enough to form a cogent response. Thanks, Marc! This particular report has become one of the highlights of my Thursdays. I’m hoping for a big public spectacle w/ lots of accusations & finger-pointing if Katie flops & stations paying her EXORBITANT syndication fee put ABC on blast.

Here is what ABC/D execs need to come out and say, “we made a mistake and we are going to do all we can to restore our daytime line-up back to the way it was and bring back AMC and OLTL”. I would also like to hear them say, “we are sorry for underestimating the loyalty of our viewers and putting them through 18 months of hell”. Okay, I am not completely delusional here, I am just saying what I think they should do. In the mean time, I plan to enjoy watching the network suffer in the ratings because of their stupidity. Thank you Marc, it does help me get through this to see the numbers every week.

Thank you, Marc. If the tv execs had only listened to the soap viewers, they would have saved themselves a lot of time and money. No replacement show will ever have the following that All My Children and One Life To Live have. After over a year since the cancellations, soap fans are still fighting to restore our shows and will continue to do so until ABC releases the rights to someone who cares. ABC’s ratings continue to decline and viewers are leaving in droves, except to watch General Hospital. Advertisers should be watching this downward trend very carefully.

thank you marc i look forward to these articles. it makes me realizee we still need to keep up the fight becasue every decision abc makes is worde than the last one in trying to fix the mistake they made when they cancelled amc n oltl. sooner or later abc needs to realize anything they put in those time slots will NOT succeed we want quality scripted programs not mindless dribbel hour after hour. abc bring back amc/oltl

Marc, I too love reading this news you bring us on Thursdays. I wish nothing but bad endings for the Chew and GAA………….don’t forget Katie’s going to get her turn in September. ABC/Disney has turned so many viewers daily lives upside down it’s a shame. Bring back AMC and OLTL.

Loving GH by the way. It’s rocking!

  8. SmurfAug 16, 2012 at 6:51 pm

I agree with everyone here, the key would be if ABC could look at the ratings they have now and want to risk putting Katie on. It seems to me that in 18mths it is written on the wall that we are not going to put up with another informational show shoved down our throats. To make it even sadder, Katie knows this and is willing to be canceled after a few episodes. Please don’t use the ploy of putting Soap Stars on to gain good ratings, anytime, it is insulting to them and more so to us as the viewer. I don’t care if all of GH showed up to the Katie show will not watch it. Your moving my timeslot and took away my shows. No Thank You

If it is Thursday then we are reading our favorite article Marc and that is the daytime ratings. Thank You very much. Once again the ratings are proving ABC never really understood the full scope fo their decison to cancel our beloved Soaps. Katie will have some long battle ahead of her to even try to get respectable ratings Let this be a lesson to all Networks listen to your viewers for they are the ones that line your pockets not your P&L’s sheets… Ratings Matter and the Soap Fans have spoken

  10. LindseyHAug 16, 2012 at 7:39 pm

Thanks for keeping us in the loop, Marc! I wonder how many years OLTL and AMC could have stayed on the air if ABC put Katie’s “salary” back into them? I will continue to boycott ABC except for the General Hospital hour.

An American soap opera costs about $300,000 to $400,000 an episode. There are 261 weekdays, minus, let’s say, five weeks of repeats, that’s about 206 episodes a year. 206 episodes times the cost per episode is between $61.8 million and $82.4 million a season. No way Katie’s talk show cost anywhere near that total.

Such great news thank you do much for keeping us informed. ABC thought we were a bunch of computer illiterate old people. They thought wrong we are fans who are a smart educated and will not watch their stupid replacement shows including Katie. Don’t they remember what happened when she went to the Nightly News. What a bunch of idiots.

While we soapers continue to rejoice in ABC’s daytime woes, bear in mind that this covers week 2 of NBC’s Olympic daytime coverage. It will be interesting to see next week’s post-Olympic ratimgs to see where we really stand

  13. crazyforpugsAug 17, 2012 at 3:01 am

Thanks for keeping us informed of the ratings disaster for ABC since they canceled two of the three soaps in the daytime line-up. It’s only General Hospital for me on ABC!

  14. Bonbonn62Aug 19, 2012 at 2:43 pm

I am happy to hear about this..but I also wonder what the ratings for General Hospital have been like? Are they still in last place or hovering about 3 place??
