Domestic Box Office Results for Weekend of December 9

SKYFALL BACK IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT

Week five of new James Bond flick Skyfall from Sony topped the U.S. box office this past weekend, with another $10.8 million. Comparably, that was $400,000 more than second-place Rise of the Guardians from Paramount. Next was Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 from Lionsgate at $9.2 million, followed by Lincoln from Disney at $8.9 million. Playing For Keeps, grossing just $5.8 million, marks back-to-back flops for Gerard Butler, with his Chasing Mavericks in October as his earlier disappointment.

The top-12 domestic weekend box office estimates listed in descending order, per data collected as of Sunday, December 9, 2012 is available as follows [in brackets: percent difference from last weekend's domestic gross, if available, and total domestic gross to-date]:

1. Skyfall (Sony): $10.8 million [down 34.9 percent; $261.4 million]

2. Rise of the Guardians (Paramount): $10.4 million [down 22.3 percent; $61.8 million]

3. Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 (Lionsgate): $9.2 million [down 47.4 percent; $268.7 million]

4. Lincoln (Disney): $8.9 million [down 33.3 percent; $97.1 million]

5. Life of Pi (20th Century Fox): $8.3 million [down 31.4 percent; $60.9 million]

6. Playing for Keeps (FilmDistrict): $5.8 million

7. Wreck it Ralph (Disney): $4.9 million [down 30.1 percent; $164.4 million]

8. Red Dawn (FilmDistrict): $4.2 million [down 34.8 percent; $37.2 million]

9. Flight (Paramount): $3.1 million [down 30.1 percent; $86.2 million]

10. Killing Them Softly (The Weinstein Company): $2.8 million [down 58.8 percent; $11.8 million]

11. Silver Linings Playbook (The Weinstein Company): $2.2 million [down 29.7 percent; $14.0 million]

12. Anna Karenina (Focus Features): $1.5 million [down 31.2 percent; $6.6 million]
