HBO LEADS THE TV PACK WITH 17 NOMINATIONS
Nominations for the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which honor the best in movies and television, were announced this morning at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. On the television side, HBO received 17 nominations, the most of any television network this year. And HBO made-for TV movie Game Change, which chronicled Sarah Palin’s 2008 vice presidential run, led all TV programming, with five nominations. Homeland on Showtime followed with four nods; while Downton Abbey on PBS, Modern Family on ABC and HBO TV movie The Girl each snagged three.
In a season marred with no new break-out hit network programming, only one new fall series – drama Nashville on ABC – made the cut, with nominations for Connie Britton for Best Drama Actress and Hayden Panettiere for Best Series, TV Movie or Miniseries Supporting Actress. Four of the five nominees for Best Drama Series (Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Homeland and The Newsroom) were on cable, in fact, with PBS’ aforementioned Downton Abbey (which snagged three nods in total) the fifth occupant.
Musical NBC dramedy Smash, which debuted last February, was the only other freshman occupant, with a nomination for Best Comedy or Musical Series.
