SUPER BOWL CBS SOARS PAST THE COMPETITION

CBS was the dominant force for the week of January 28 care of the Baltimore Ravens at the San Francisco 49ers on Super Bowl XLVII, of course. And that game is now the third-most watched telecast in the history television, with 108.69 million viewers (based on the Live Plus Same Day results from Nielsen). Keep in mind that NBC aired the New York Giants vs. the New England Patriots on Super Bowl XLVI one year earlier (hence the steep declines for the Peacock net). Trailing in the very distant No. 2 spot was the home of American Idol, Fox, which is still a top attraction despite the ongoing year-to-year losses.

In new midseason series news, week two of Fox drama The Following, with Kevin Bacon, continued to impress, building by lead-in Bones by 27 percent among adults 18-49 on Monday (3.3 rating/ 8 share vs. 2.6/ 7) and averaging 10.10 million viewers in the Monday 9 p.m. hour. But NBC drama Do No Harm was DOA Thursday at 10 p.m. with 3.12 million viewers (#64 overall) and a 0.9 rating/3 share among adults 18-49 (#67t). ABC cooking competition The Taste (Viewers: #46 overall, 4.80 million; A18-49: #36t, 1.6/ 4) slipped by double-digit percentages anchoring Tuesday. And dramas The Carrie Diaries on The CW (Viewers: #94, 1.38 million; A18-49: #87t, 0.5/ 1) and Deception on NBC (Viewers: #57, 3.73 million; A18-49: #55t, 1.2/ 3) remained marred by the lack of interest.

Elsewhere, there was a pair of original specials this week: The Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials on CBS (Viewers: #17, 9.65 million; A18-49: #24t, 2.0/ 6 – Wednesday at 8 p.m.) and annual The NAACP Awards on Fox (Viewers: #66, 3.04 million; A18-49: #73t, 0.8/ 3 – Friday from 8-10 p.m.).

What follows are the results by network (with change versus the comparable year-ago period in parentheses), followed by the Top 30 rankings (in total viewers and adults 18-49).
