FOX RULES, BUT EROSION AMONG THE VETERANS THE IMMEDIATE OBSERVATION
Below average is the operative way to describe the results last night with Wednesday stalwarts American Idol on Fox, Survivor on CBS and Modern Family on ABC, among others, all beneath typical audience levels. Even a diluted American Idol was enough for Fox to reign supreme, however, with the 90-minute Survivor: Caramoan (Fans vs. Favorites) season opener at 8.96 million viewers and a 2.4 rating/7 share among adults 18-49, according to the fast affiliate results from Nielsen from 8-9:30 p.m. One year earlier, the season-opening installment of Survivor: One World (from 8-9 p.m.) averaged 10.79 million viewers and a 3.1/ 9 in the demo (based on the Live Plus Same Day data).

Elsewhere, sitcom The Middle on ABC was also diluted last night at 7.63 million viewers and a 1.9/ 6 among adults 18-49. But retention for frosh entry The Neighbors at 8:30 p.m. of 89 percent in the demo is promising. Chicago Fire on NBC, meanwhile, built from veteran Law & Order: SVY and is a shoo-in for a second season renewal. And Arrow on The CW earned its renewal stripes. As for Wednesday 8-9 p.m. Peacock net sitcoms Whitney and Guys With Kids, tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking.
