Richard Bull, who is remembered for his nine-season (1974-83) stint on NBC family drama “Little House on the Prairie” as kindly shopkeeper Nels Oleson, died yesterday in Calabasas, California of undisclosed causes. He was 89.
Born on June 26, 1924 in Zion Illinois, Bull began his stage career at the famous Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Illinois. Prior to “Little House on the Prairie,” he was a regular on ABC science fiction drama “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea” as the doctor from 1964-68. Guest appearances over the course of Bull’s career included “Mission: Impossible,” “Mannix,” “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,” “Bonanza,” “The Streets of San Francisco,” “Barnaby Jones,” “Hill Street Blue,” “Designing Women” and “ER.” In 1985, he was reunited with Michael Landon on two episodes of Landon’s “Highway to Heaven” on NBC. Film roles included “The Andromeda Strain” and “The Thomas Crown Affair” in 1968, “High Plains Drifter” in 1973 and “The Parallax View” in 1974.
Bull is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Collentine.
