ABC AND FOX WIN; YEARLY LOSSES FOR ALL FIVE NETS
It was business as usual on this final full week in April. CBS was tops in total viewers, and Fox No. 1 in the three key demos – adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and adults 18-34. But both networks lost steam compared to one year earlier, as did ABC, Fox and The CW.
There was one series premiere this week, Canadian drama The L.A. Complex on The CW, and it was DOA in the Tuesday 9 p.m. hour at just 630,000 viewers (#98 overall – dead last for the week) and a 0.3 rating/1 share among adults 18-49 (#97t). Comparably, this was the worst opening for any series ever on The CW, with retention out of tired lead-in 90210 (Viewers: 1.11 million; A18-49: 0.6/ 2 at 8 p.m.) of 57 percent in total viewers and 50 percent in the demo.
Elsewhere, nothing new in midseason can be considered a hit, with the most-watched of the 13 entries this week Missing on ABC, and it averaged just 6.98 million viewers. Highest rated among adults 18-49 was Smash (NBC), Don’t Trust The B____ in Apartment 23 (ABC) and Scandal (ABC), each with a 2.0 rating in the demo. Four weeks into its six-episode run, meanwhile, and NBC pulled sitcom BFF in exchange for a double weekly Wednesday dose of Betty White’s Off Their Rockers. Consider this one of the blandest new midseason slates in the history of television.
Here are the overall results by network for the week of April 23 (with change versus the comparable year-ago period in parentheses), followed by the freshman midseason series report card and the Top 30 rated programs of the week in total viewers and adults 18-49.
