It was a clean sweep for basketball-ignited CBS, with a first-place finish in total viewers and the three key demos: adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and adults 18-34, according to Nielsen. Ohio State vs. Kansas on the NCAA Basketball Championship on CBS Saturday topped the charts for the week among adults 18-49, with a 5.5 rating/17 share (and 16.60 million viewers overall). The moral of this story: Viewers will watch network television on Saturday if there is something worthwhile on.

Fox finished second overall demographically, but a deteriorating American Idol resulted in year-to-year losses of as much as 23 percent in adults 18-34. ABC was also on the double-digit downside, while noticeable growth for last-place The CW is a result of more original programming. The home of The Voice, NBC, was close to year-ago levels.

In series-premiere news, reality competition Escape Routes on NBC was DOA with what could be the network’s worst performance in the Saturday 8 p.m. hour. It averaged a mere 1.09 million viewers (#94) and a 0.2 rating/1 share among adults 18-49 (#95), which finished dead last for the week.

In season (or series) finale results, freshman Fox drama Alcatraz concluded in the Monday 9 p.m. hour with limited interest at 4.75 million viewers (#48) and a 1.5 rating/4 share among adults 18-49 (#48t). Although the competition (Dancing With the Stars on ABC and The Voice on NBC) was fierce, CBS in repeats should have translated into more interest for Alcatraz. Chances are it will not be returning next season.

On NBC, Wednesday 8-9 p.m. sitcoms Whitney and Are You There, Chelsea? ended their first (and potentially last) seasons with minimal interest (see Freshman Midseason Series Report Card below). Since freshman Up All Night also on the fence on the Peacock net, chances are one of the three comedies will be back (with Are You There, Chelsea? the least likely).

In week two news, two more episodes of NBC sitcom Bent dipped from its almost invisible arrival one week earlier with an average 2.45 million viewers and a 0.9/ 2 among adults 18-49 out of Are You There, Chelsea? in the Wednesday 9 p.m. hour (see individual episode rankings below).

On the fence CSI: NY returned on CBS, meanwhile, with 9.45 million viewers (#21) and a 1.6/ 5 in the demo (#43t) in the Friday 9 p.m. hour. While that did built from lead-in Undercover Boss (Viewers: #26, 8.14 million; A18-49: #36t, 1.8/ 7 at 8 p.m.) by 1.31 million viewers, it dipped by two-tenths of a rating point (or 11 percent) among adults 18-49. In the specials department on CBS was The 47th Annual Country Music Association Awards at 13.09 million viewers (#12) and a 3.1/ 8 in the demo (#10t) in the Sunday 8-11 p.m. block. Comparably, that was close to year-ago levels.
