Week four of summer ABC daytime time period filler Good Afternoon America plummeted, dipping to 1.36 million viewers for the week of July 30 and dropping from year-ago occupant One Life to Live by as much as 70 percent among women 18-49, according to Nielsen Media Research. The View on ABC dominated, of course, but there was visible across-the-board erosion for the quartet…The Talk on CBS and The Chew on ABC included.

For a closer look, here are the results for the quartet (with change versus the comparable year-ago period in parentheses):

-Total Viewers:
The View (ABC): 2.58 million (-15), The Talk (CBS): 1.89 (-10), The Chew (ABC); 1.86 (-26 from All My Children), Good Afternoon America (ABC): 1.36 (-56 from One Life to Live)

-Women 25-54:
The View (ABC): 670,000 (-22), The Talk (CBS): 555,000 (-10), The Chew (ABC): 433,000 (-42), Good Afternoon America (ABC): 289,000 (-68)

-Women 18-49:
The View (ABC): 527,000 (-18), The Talk (CBS): 404,000 (-16), The Chew (ABC); 336,000 (-41), Good Afternoon America (ABC): 215,000 (-70)

Women 18-34:
The View (ABC): 190,000 (- 8), The Chew (ABC): 134,000 (-26), The Talk (CBS): 101,000 (-19), Good Afternoon America (ABC): 85,000 (-61)

GAA is another EPIC FAIL! The lousy line up now seems to be dragging The View down with it.

    • nmelman

Their entire schedule is one big flop with more to come. They obviously do not care about ratings.

  • carolc

The viewers have spoken loudly…..No more talk/”reality” shows. Bring back our soaps and the viewers will follow.

  • kerry

i try not to be repetitive when i post but this has gona on for a while now, when will abc finally get the message n put back the programs we the viewwers want to watch clearly its not just affecting 1 time slot its having an impact on all of daytime. no matter what they put in those slots we will not watch n just another thought how do they even know katie will succeed just saying. i look forward to seeing how horrible thesr eplacemtn shows are doing . love it when soap fans are rroven right.

  • OwensboroSteve

The demise of Good Afternoon America and the lower ratings for other talkfests is fantastic news! GH fans, stand up and be counted!

  • 1_bammom

See ABC/Disney…Millions of viewers continue to tell and show you LOUDLY we do not want your bore talk daytime shows. We want what we want and that’s our soaps!! We have told you that to cancel AMC and OLTL is NOT what we want you to do. That if you did cancel which you did, that We Would Not Watch Any Replacement Shows Of Yours. We Meant It! I remember your promise to find a new home for AMC and OLTL that they WOULD LIVE ON. Time for ABC to make good on that promise if you want to rebuild your daytime viewing numbers. Remember ABC/Disney the customer/viewer Is Always Right!!!

  • adrienne darling

Ok, trying to conceal laughter about the replacement shows demise and lackluster ratings since Especially OLTL was cancelled while the ratings were still Very good. I miss both AMC and OLTL (especially OLTL) they were a part of my daily routine for well over 35 years. I do not want to watch reality shows or talk shows during daytime. We have enough of that in the evening across the board. I want my SOAPS back!!! I want to mix and mingle with soap stars and fans at luncheon’s, charity events and SuperSoap Weekend. I MISS MY SOAPS!!!

  • Joe

Cancelling “One Life To Live” remains one of the all-time stupidest moves made by one network! ABC: You Blew It! As for the person responsible for this catastrophe: he has since left the network.

  • Edna Barefoot

I can’t believe ABC is so silly. Just to avoid admitting they were wrong they are letting their network go down the drain. To the Board of Directors of ABC your execs need to be TRAINED. Bring back OLTL & millions of viewers will return. Until then everything you put on in the afternoon will fail. You have doomed Katie’s show. The VIEWERS know what they want to watch & ABC is not it. Boycott ABC

    • QueenMabb

I couldn’t agree with you more . This is rediculous, at this point abc soap viewers, and then some are not going to watch anything they put on in the afternoon. So ABC/Disney what are going to do!!!! Are you going to keep costing yourselves a ton of money, or are you going to put things back where they belong, and set things right. I guarantee daytime people will come back and your rating will soar..

  • diz

clapping!!!!! Just another crap show we flushed down the drain! We told you…. we pleaded with you….. to keep our soaps. Can you hear us yet?

  • Lisa

ABC needs to just admit they made a mistake & give the viewers what we want & that’s the same thing we have wanted for the past 40 + years OUR SOAPS!!! I’m 35 and not a day goes by I don’t miss OLTL & AMC!!! I will NEVER watch any replacement shows & will only watch again if they put back my shows!

  • sjmarcipan

I certainly would not want to be Katie Couric right now. I too miss OLTL and AMC daily. It’s super, super sad. ABC/Disney did some serious damage in the customer relations department……………….

  • Jason

ABC might as well just admit it. They did the wrong thing and they need to now put it right, which is getting that hour back from the ABC affliaites, Get rid of the Spew and GAA, then getting AMC and OLTL back on the air. Don’t care what order they are in, but I rather have them back on, then the failures they got on right now.

  • camille

Thank you Marc once again all I have to say is GAA Score 0 SOAP FANS Score 4……. think its going to be a shutout!

  • cassiehicks89

“Good Afternoon, America” is in big trouble-again, just like we soap opera viewers have predicted.;)

  • bcoleman13

Soon we will say ABC WHO!!! The only quality program ABC has on is General Hospital now. UGH – when will they give us back what we want so they can get what they want? No common sense at ABC! No replacement show will make it and will continue to fail!

  • yankeesrj12

I love Good Morning America, but this is sooo bad.

  • GrammaDiamond

I am pretty much going to say the same thing as the others. WE WANT OUR SOAPS BACK…PERIOD!!!!! You guys keep right on putting on these ridiculous “replacement” shows, supposedly, to save money, but how expensive is it to keep replacing the replacement shows? I mean, how much dumber can you guys at ABC/Disney be?

Get it through your heads, that this is not going to change! We said that if you canceled our soaps, that we would not watch ANYTHING in it’s place! You claim to be trying to get the “younger” audience, but you know where that “younger” audience is during the day? They are at the beach, at the gym, at school, on FB, on Twitter, texting, chatting, IM’ing, etc… They are not watching daytime TV on a regular basis. The ones who DO watch on a regular basis, are those of us who WANT TO SEE OUR SOAPS!!

We do not want to see “The Spew”. We do not want to see GAA, (no offense to the reporters). We definitely don’t want to see Katie Couric in any way, shape, or form!! What in the world could she POSSIBLY have to say, that we would want to sit and watch for an hour?? NOTHING!!!!!! We got rid of “The Revolt-lution”, and we will get rid of the rest of that daytime crap too, until you put our soaps back on!! All I have to say is, that they had better not get rid of GH!!

  • KristenH

I hope ABC/Disney listens to us. We don’t want talk/cooking/reality shows. We want our soaps back. So glad GAA is temporary and has a month left to air.

  • Kris

What is it going to take for them to understand that we want AMC and OLTL?
If they were still at least making SOME money with the daytime dramas, and now they are making NO MONEY with these failed shows, isn’t it better to stick with the dramas? We all knew these talk shows would be disasters.
Please bring back the daytime dramas. They lasted for over 40 years. Thank you.

  • krogers

    Doing a happy dance!

  • Anne

ABC/D BRING BACK ALL MY CHILDREN AND ONE LIFE TO LIVE!!!!!!! It’s been nearly a year. You are losing viewers by the drove. Quit being so idiotic, admit your mistake, and put the soaps back on.

  • crazyforpugs

Ha, Ha, Ha!!!! We loyal soap fans will continue to boycott everything but General Hospital until you bring back our soaps.

  • Troy Turner

While the numbers are good per the soaps vs talk debate, and have pretty much sealed the fate of GAA, IMO, let’s keep in mind that there is a piece missing from the discussion. It’s been widely reported that NBC’s daytime coverage from London has been getting record ratings. So while we can rightly celebrate this-and most likely-next week’s ratings, we probably won’t get a true reading again until the Olympics are over.

  • divastyle

Are you FINALLY listening now ABC? We told you that soap fans would not watch ANYTHING that replaced our soaps and now the ratings are proving it! The time has come for you to admit that you made a HUGE mistake by cancelling AMC & OLTL, but it’s not to late to make it right, bring them back ASAP and the viewers will return!!

  • nmelman

Does ABC even care about ratings? I personally do not think so. They took my shows while I was recuperating from cancer. Good timing. Just another huge fail by ABC. When will they ever learn?

  • susanmz

Hey, ABC! Just how dumb are you guys? Don’t you get it? We don’t want to watch chatty drek like GAA. We want our stories back.

  • cassiehicks89

This is something that we soap opera viewers have predicted; not only is “Good Afternoon, America” is in more serious trouble, but, also, the representatives of Prospect Park are giving up the rights of “All My Children”, along with “One Life To Live” back to ABC-Disney. Let’s hope those representatives of ABC-Disney start selling those shows to either SoapNet, ABC Family, or Lifetime Television.

  • michelec8916

GAA was doomed to fail in OLTL’s time slot, just like the Revolution did. ABC needs to right their wrong, and revive OLTL, just like Roger Friedman stated in Forbes. Thank you Marc for keeping us updated!:)

  • CTwildheart

WHY doesn’t ABC/D get it? We, the fans, get that they are in the business to make money and yes talk/reality shows are cheaper to produce. But when you fail to get viewers to these ‘cheaper’ shows – YOU LOSE MONEY! Just put the soaps back on (even if in a different format: 1/2 hour…) with less cast and you will see your daytime AND primetime viewership improve. Otherwise, I am still watching ONLY General Hospital on ABC/D. We are still here, we are NOT going away…(just away from your programming)

  • Pattyan

LOVE these poor ratings! ABC gets what they deserve! They messed with one of the largest fan bases by decide to take two 40 year programs off the air for what……more reality!?!? I thought it was too costly to do both AMC & OLTL and they can afford Katie? Ridiculous!! Bring back our Soaps and you’ll bring back the ratings!!

  • sammy

GAA is a so-so replacement. But daffy duck Josh E. and looloo Lara S. need to be axed and replaced with Ryan Seacrest and Niecie Nash. Just like bye bye to that pathetic The Revolution. Or bring back the soaps and be done with!!!

  • ZHunter

There are some elements I hate from Good Morning America that make me change the channel. Well, someone decided to put all those elements together and torture us in the afternoons.

  • pamelaellerbee

I thnk it’s time to stop watching prime time also. The new show 66 park avenue is not going to replace the soaps. The fans are asking to bring back the soaps for 1 year and watch how your ratings will increase and ABC will see their mistake. Bring back the soaps because this is starting to effect THE View. The Katie Show can be put into Oprah Showslot.
