CBS was the most-watched network on this first Friday of the new TV season, according to the fast affiliate results from Nielsen, but year-to-year losses for the network (versus the Live Plus Same Day Results on 9/23/11) of 1.48 million viewers and 19 percent among adults 18-49 means sluggish Friday is unlikely to perk up. NBC and Fox also suffered noticeable erosion (ABC was in repeats from 8-10 p.m. on opening Friday in 2011).

In series-premiere news, CBS drama Made in Jersey did not impress at 7.74 million viewers (#1) and a 1.1 rating/4 share among adults 18-49 (#2t) in the 9 p.m. hour. Comparably, this was down from the season-premiere of year-ago occupant CSI: NY (Viewers: 10.68 million; A18-49: 1.8/ 6 on 9/23/11) by 2.94 million viewers and a hefty 39 percent in the demo. CSI: NY, meanwhile, lost steam as the 8 p.m. anchor with 9.00 million viewers and a 1.3/ 5 among adults 18-49.

Top-rated series for the evening was the third season-premiere of Blue Bloods on CBS at 11.02 million viewers and a 1.5/ 5 in the demo. But that was also down (25 percent in adults 18-49, in particular) and a 1.5 rating in the demo means that the younger viewers the networks covet are just not home watching network television on Friday.

Elsewhere, Shark Tank on ABC and Grimm on NBC won their time periods among adults 18-49 (with Grimm No. 1 for the night in the demo); the season-premiere of Fringe on Fox plunged to its weakest opening; ABC got more sampling for the pilot of Last Resort care of any encore telecast at 9 p.m.; and America’s Next Top Model on The CW is in need of the axe to swing.

I imagine Undercover Boss will return to 8 p.m. in the near future, leading into CSI: NY.
