Both The Chew and The Revolution on ABC Lose More Steam

The situation has worsened for recent ABC daytime entries The Chew and The Revolution. Based on the Live Plus Same Day ratings from Nielsen for the week of March 19, The Chew dipped to 2.04 million viewers, which trailed year-ago occupant All My Children by 230,000 viewers (or 14 percent). Key female demo erosion for the week was as high as 25 percent among women 18-49 and women 25-54. The Revolution, meanwhile, sunk to another series low…1.32 million viewers. And that was off from former mainstay One Life to Life by 1.19 million viewers (or 47 percent) and as high as 60 percent among women 18-34.

Word of caution to ABC: Do not make the same mistake with General Hospital.

Here is The Chew and The Revolution versus All My Children and One Life to Live:

All My Children – Week of 3/21/11
Viewers: 2.37 million, Women 25-54: 1.1 rating/ 7 share, Women 18-49: 0.8/ 5, Women 18-34: 0.4/ 3

The Chew – Week of 3/19/12
Viewers: 2.04 million, Women 25-54: 0.9/ 6, Women 18-49: 0.6/ 4, Women 18-34: 0.3/ 2

Percent Change – The Chew vs. All My Children

Viewers: -14, Women 25-54: -18, Women 18-49: -25, Women 18-34: -25

One Life to Live – Week of 3/21/11
Viewers: 2.51 million, Women 25-54: 1.3/ 8, Women 18-49: 0.9/ 6, Women 18-34: 0.5/ 4

The Revolution – Week of 3/19/12
Viewers: 1.32 million, Women 25-54: 0.7/ 4, Women 18-49: 0.5/ 3, Women 18-34: 0.2/ 2

Percent Change – The Revolution vs. One Life to Live
Viewers: -47, Women 25-54: -46, Women 18-49: -44, Women 18-34: -60

The View on ABC topped the quartet of daytime talkers, of course, with a diluted 2.63 million viewers, while The Talk on CBS was on par from one year earlier with 1.96 million viewers, a 0.9 rating/6 share in women 25-54, and a 0.7/ 5 in women 18-49.

  • Jason

Well ABC. what do you say people want now? That’s right. We want escape from reality, not to be kept in it.

    • carols2dogs

      I agree wholeheartedly!!

  • susanmz

I find this is just wonderful news. I’m glad to see the Revolution going down in fames, and it now appears The Chew has a leaking audience.

Brian Frons’s bright idea was none too bright.

ABC needs to save General Hospital and release the rights to AMC and OLTL.

Thanks Marc Berman, for your continuing coverage!

    • carols2dogs

      Amen to that!

  • carolc

With a cancellation announcement coming soon to make room for Katie Couric’s new talk show, I truly hope that Disney/ABC hears the soap opera fans. We have been saying since day one that neither the Chew nor the Revolution were worthy of taking the places of either All My Children or One Life To Live. It’s time to repair your tarnished image – Disney – and keep General Hospital on the air.

  • okicarol

I can not feel sorry for ABC loosing their daytime viewers. – If they would have listened to their viewers they would have done something to keep the soaps on– I am sick of talk shows !

  • Debbie Joyce

ABC gambled with airing The Revolution even though it tested poorly in hopes it would attract non-One Life To Live viewers. They lost the bet obviously as it is attracting no one at all.

Now, will they be big enough to admit their mistake and move General Hospital into that time slot? Or will they replace The Revolution with yet another show that is testing poorly? Katie Couric should also be concerned with this as she needs a strong lead in.

  • camille

Yes, ABC don’t make the same mistake with General Hospital Get rid of the Revolution save Sweeney from further embarressment. Get your viewers back and think Soap they always made you money. They funded your primetime programs and if you do the right thing and you can make some of your viewers happy To make us all happy and to become number 1 again you would have to restore daytime the way Walt Disney wanted it with all the Soaps back and do away with Reality for it is all so played out already

  • Mindachsiefan

Well, Disney/ABC that reality t.v. Programming replacing the Soaps. How is it working for you? At this rate, you will no longer have any Daytime viewers left. I am sure your advertisers would like a bigger return for their dollar!

  • susanmz

Sweeney needs to lose her job.

  • CharlieSheen

One thing that I did not expect was for The Chew to lose as much steam as it did as its been on the decline for weeks now. So ABC will be facing a problem in the future with The Chew now.

Why is The Revolution still on air? Are their any affiliates still airing this bull live?

ABC better keep GH, its their only saving grace. I expect GH to be a much stronger ratings performer during the fall in its new timeslot.

    • carols2dogs

      I agree wholeheartedly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • slj730

Thank you for compiling this data Marc. With every week, viewers/fans of serial daytime television are sending a very loud message to ABC/Disney: we do not want to watch Reality TV. The genre for soaps remains in demand, reality TV is over-saturated and not what people appear to want to watch during the “daytime” hours.

  • DakotaCelt

ABC violated one of the Marland rules: REspect the viewer…

ABC did not respect the viewer..

I still do not understand why The Revolution is still on the air. It is a repulsive program. ABC needs to stand by GH and release the rights to AMC and OLTL.

  • devotedtodaytimeSOAPS

This is awesome news. Finally someone has admitted that the Spew is also failing as well as the Revoltion. It is about time!!!! We knew no one was watching either show. Now what are you going to do ABC/D? They need to smarten up before they lose more money and being back All My Children and One Life to Live and put Kati somewhere else! We want our escape from reality back. Give us back our Love in the Afternoon, with all three shows! We are tried of the BS!!!!

  • sjmarcipan

Agree, thanks for the data compilation. Surely ABC/Disney would never have the balls to put this out there. Fingers crossed that GH continues to air but nonetheless sickened about AMC and OLTL. Will NEVER watch ABC prime-time or daytime other than GH Nor will I support Disney. Plenty of other choices out there……….

  • iluvssw

None of this comes as a surprise to me. It was only a matter of time for the Spew, Michael Symon could only carry the show for so long till peeps get bored with the same old thing day in and day out. I started watching The Bay web series and they totally get it. Not only do they use wise advertising but they also use the products of the advertiser in the show, duh, what a concept? Something ABC/D could have done all along with all the soaps.

  • FloDiBona

Marc, thank you for this article! These numbers prove out what Soapers have understood for almost a year. People making decisions for Disney/ABC daytime programming have no connection whatsoever with the people who make up the viewing audience. They make decisions in a bubble with a warped view of the world where only their experience, goals, and attitudes are valid. This pitiful performance also speaks volumes to what happens when programming is greed-driven. It warms my heart to know viewers are not buying into this insulting, plastic, profit-driven programming.

  • divastyle

Hello ABC, can you hear us now??? We have been screaming since April 2011 when you first made the biggest mistake you ever made when you cancelled AMC & OLTL that we did not want shows like The Chew & Revolution, but you ignored us, the proof is in the ratings! It is still not to late to do the right thing and retain some dignity: BRING BACK OUR SOAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • cottle

ABC/D your rating go lower every week for these stupid replacement shows. Don’t you get it yet? All of ABC is being boycotted not just daytime. Why don’t you think with your commonsense instead of your greed?

  • joyceboxx

This makes me feel all warm & fuzzy inside!! Choke on that, Brian Frons!!

  • Troy Turner

Let’s see now, 15 percent below AMC, and 47 percent below OLTL. Seems like a strong message to me. Even if The Chew is determined to be an acceptable loss by ABC-it still proves the point that fans of daytime will accept NOTHING BUT daytime drama on ABC. Tick, tick, tick, ABC-make the right decision…

  • http://N/A coolmom

    Well ABC
that should let you know that Soap opera fans have spoken and rebelled ..
no way will i ever watch anything that takes the place of the soaps taken off the air..

    bring back our soap operas..
one day .. i wnt to the store and left the TV on ..I thought i would be back before the noon hour to turn the channel..
when i realized i would not make it home in time ..
i called home and had my husband turn off the way did i want it to register that ABC was being watched…
I have learned to like the “talk ” …and it is better than the view.
i onlt watch ABC news and dancing with the stars/batchelor/batchelorette
and general hospital….rest of the day ..ABC no longer gets my view.
oprah network is sinking..she should pick up the soaps and her ratings will improve .

  • ivankipling

The Chew and The Rev are both unwatchable. Their ratings were already far exceeded their quality. I will enjoy nothing more than watching both burn in ratings hell.

  • Sweetmama

Well well we have been saying along we do not want those other Replacement Shows i am so glad there numbers are falling now bring back Amc Oltl..

  • KristenH

Thanks Marc from keeping it on the level with ABC. I hope they would learn the listen. If you cancel a soap, you’ll lose viewers and the replacements won’t survive 40+ years. Save GH, ABC, and put Katie Couric for 2 PM slot, if you want to save your network.

  • Kollene

ABC is scrambling trying to figure out a face saving way to undo their mistake for sure. As a long time fan of the soaps genre since the 60s I will not soon forget this little trick and neither will ABC (Already Been CHEWED) LOL.

  • soapaddict12

ABC do you hear us now!!!!!! We cannot be trained to watch what you want us to watch. If I wanted boring cooking, reality and talk shows I have plenty of cable stations for that. I am sure that the dismal amount of viewers watching the replacement shows are not dvring them or watching them online to see what they missed that day. Also when you put soapnet on the air did you not realize then that the ratings during the day would go down, or better yet when you put them on Oh that’s right this is ABC we are talking about, they don’t think they just do.

  • nmelman

I can’t believe that anyone is surprised by these numbers. 2 worst shows on TV. ABC has ruined themselves and no one will ever watch them again except General Hospital. If they put our shows back on the air, there numbers might improve.

  • OwensboroSteve

Once again we see that ABC made the worst possible decision by dropping All My Children and One Life to Live in favor of airing talk shows in a market that is over-saturated with such programs.

I know that Katie Couric has said that she would prefer that General Hospital be her lead-in. I hope she is closely monitoring the awful ratings for The Revolution and speaks up strongly to have General Hospital remain on the air as it would be the far superior lead-in for her show.

ABC, please admit that you DO have a market for daytime drama and watch how you will be rewarded.

Once again, thank you Marc, for continuing to post the ratings for The Chew and The Revolution in order that everyone can see the colossal errors ABC has made.

  • TikiBarb

Nothing will thrive in these time slots. The soap opera fans are a LOYAL audience. Keep General Hospital and release the rights to AMC and OLTL. DO THE RIGHT THING ABC/DISNEY !!! Just remember our boycott also includes your prime time shows (which by the way are mostly SOAP OPERAS). We will not even give them a chance ! Thanks Marc Berman for your updates. KEEP GENERAL HOSPITAL !!!!!

  • MistyV76

ABC/D please for the love of everything daytime stop the insanity and give us back our soaps!!! Your awful replacement shows suck for lack of a better word. But if I did have a better word, I guess I would have to go with gag-worthy. Wise up and think like business people, reality shows are out and so are improve yourself shows. They have networks for that type of junk and they are slowly eroding also. Just give up the crap t.v. and give us our gems back.

  • norasusan

ABC/D, you need to sit down with JC Penney, Macy’s, Rickett and Benckiser, Kraft, Hershey’s, Kimberly-Clark, Scott, and the rest of your sponsors to tell them that the American viewing public is not going to watch cheap, junk shows. If you don’t, all of you will hang together because we aren’t watching, and we won’t watch in the future.

  • pebby16

I cannot figure out why ABC/Disney is dragging their feet on making the change that they know should be done. Bring back AMC and OLTL.

  • rdgbig

Looks like the Chew just hit an iceberg and is about to sink like the Revolution

  • HowlingWolfLeather

The ABC network should make note of these ratings and make a decision that will help the network, ALL I watch on ABC is General Hospital … NO other daytime OR primetime viewing… if General Hospital is cancelled I will no longer watch the network. Even in keeping General Hospital it is all I will watch because of the the networks decision to cancel All My Children and One Life To Live and refusal to release the rights to those shows to Agnes Nixon.

  • Anne

Marc, I can’t tell you how happy this makes me! ABC/Disney: Are you listening YET?!

  • Casey Costello

I have only this to say, and it is directed towards everyone responsible at ABC/Disney who had a hand in destroying their soap lineup:

To quote Connie Francis, “Who’s Sorry Now?”

  • Avellina

It’s not surprising that ABC’s discount tv shows are so awful and under watched!

  • Colleen1770

The Revolution caused soap fans to revolt against them!!! Fans have spoken and are not budging. We are loyal and strong. We are smart and determined. We know what we want to watch. It is awful that it has gone this far. They talk about “pink slime” being bad for us; it gets banned from our food. Susan G. Komen president resigned when her plan wasn’t liked. Why is ABC waiting so long to correct their bad decisions. Let’s get back on track. GH stays, OLTL is put back into production and Katie takes the old Oprah time slot. Get ABC back on track!!!!!

  • PaulaKate

    ABC…..The solution is simple:

Get “One Life to Live” and “All My Children” back into production immediately, renew General Hospital and leave it on the schedule at its regular 3:00 pm time slot, and put Katie on at four.

If you want your audience back, give us back our soaps and we will come back, bringing our near fifty year loyalty to our soaps and our sponsor product buying dollars with us.

  • nmelman

I am getting more sick and tired of ABC/Disney everyday. For the life of me I cannot understand why this crappy network puts the crappiest of replacement shows on tv for all to see. Obviously by the numbers, no one watches. No one will ever watch their replacement shows. Wake up ABC, if not you are in worse trouble than you can imagine. We want our shows back.

  • SSW71

The Chew and The Revolution are a CRAPFEST…. Get rid of them and bring back OUR soaps! Are you listening NOW ABC/D?

  • LindseyH

I’m thrilled! Like many other soap viewers I will not watch anything on ABC/D except GH. Others may be giving the Spew and the Revulsion a try but they’ll start changing the channel soon too.

  • Pingback: ‘The Revolution’ Hits New Series Low, Bringing Down ‘General Hospital’ | Soap Opera Network()

  • Carol Carrington-Chandler

So glad to hear that both of these crappy shows are falling of in ratings! Hey ABC/D Give US BACK OUR SOAPS !!!!

  • Stokat

Well, ABC, it appears that REALITY really does BITE! Your decision to faze out daytime drama is a clear example of “penny wise / pound foolish.” You looked at what you could save instead of how you could best invest. It’s a surprise that you don’t seem to grasp the ABCs of television programming…LISTEN TO YOUR VIEWERS! Our soaps are an integral part of our cultural heritage. If that is no longer important to ABC and its advertisers–or rather, its enablers, then let’s withdraw our support of them. Let them see what happens when REAL reality bites back and all their new initiatives die faster than an Erica Kane marriage!

  • tinafg

Hello???? Are you there stockholders of ABC/Disney???? Have you heard or voices yet???? We’re waiting to hear yours now!!!!!

  • carols2dogs

ABC, you will do well to listen to your viewers (if they still are) and do not cancel GH. Bring back AMC and OLTL. There are millions and millions of Love In The Afternoon people and not just women. If you don’t listen you may lose everything!!
