Travolta, of course, went on to greater fame as the star of theatrical “Saturday Night Fever” in 1977 and only appeared in six episodes of the final season. But what viewers may not recall is that Mr. Kotter, Gabe Kaplan, was also absent in most of the 1976-77 season (due to the success of his theatrical, “Fast Break”), and Marcia Strassman as his wife Julie was suddenly the teacher.
Plans were underway to move the setting to a community college attended by the “Sweathogs” in the final season, but it never materialized and one of the final storylines featured Arnold Horshak (Ron Palillo) marrying his girlfriend Mary (Irene Arranga). “Ooh-ooh-ooooh!”
