SUNDAY 7/15/12 Metered Markets

Household
Rating/Share
CBS 3.9/ 7
NBC 3.3/ 6
ABC 3.2/ 6
Fox 2.0/ 3

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Sunday 7/17/11
NBC: +22, ABC: +14, Fox: +11, CBS: – 9

———-

Rating Results:
CBS topped this third Sunday in July in the overnights with its line-up of a repeat of 60 Minutes (#1: 5.8 rating/11 share at 7 p.m.), the 8 p.m. time period return of Big Brother (#2: 4.0/ 7) and encore telecasts of The Good Wife (#1: 2.9/ 50 and The Mentalist (#1t: 3.1/ 6) from 9-11 p.m. Comparably, Big Brother dipped by five percent from the year-ago telecast (4.2/ 8 on 7/17/11), and that translated into 6.92 million viewers and a 2.4 rating/8 share among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day ratings.

In the battle of Big Brother versus Secret Millionaire, it was neck-and-neck in the overnights with the inspirational ABC hour at a 3.9/7. But Big Brother should have no trouble holding a noticeable advantage among adults 18-49.

Second overall in the metered markets was NBC with its combination of two-hours of Dateline (3.9/ 7 from 7-9 p.m.), and two repeat hours of overused America’s Got Talent (2.5/ 4 from 9-11 p.m.).

Elsewhere, ABC populated the evening with a repeat of America’s Funniest Home Videos (#3: 3.1/ 6), aforementioned Secret Millionaire (#3: 3.9/ 7) and sluggish Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition (2.9/ 5 from 9-11 p.m.), which fared as follows by half-hour;

Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition (ABC)
9:00 p.m.: 2.7/ 4 (#3)
9:30 p.m.: 2.8/ 5 (#2)
10:00 p.m.: 3.0/ 5 (#1)
10:30 p.m.: 3.3/ 6 (#1t)

And Fox aired repeat telecasts of American Dad (#4: 1.2/ 2), The Cleveland Show (#4: 1.3/ 2), two episodes of The Simpsons (#4: avg. 2.3/ 4 from 8-9 p.m.) and two episodes of Family Guy (#4: avg. 2.6/ 4 from 9-10 p.m.).

SATURDAY 7/14/12
Fast Affiliate Results

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 4.26 million, Fox: 2.09, ABC: 1.87, NBC: 1.69

-Adults 18-49:
CBS: 0.6 rating/2 share, Fox: 0.6/ 3, ABC and NBC: 0.3/ 1 each

There was nothing positive of note, as usual, on this typically bland Saturday with two burn-off episodes of NYC 22 and a repeat of 48 Hours Mystery enough for CBS to lead the evening at an average 4.26 million viewers and a 0.6 rating/2 share among adults 18-49. Elsewhere, legal drama The Firm officially concluded on NBC out of minimally seen original movie An American Girl: McKenna Shoots for the Stars; two encore telecasts of Cops returned on Fox into a repeat of Mobbed; and ABC populated the evening with repeats of canceled Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, two episodes of Ball Boys and a Saturday installment of Castle.

FRIDAY 7/13/12

Fast Affiliate Results

-Total Viewers:

ABC: 4.92 million, CBS: 4.74, NBC: 3.79, Fox: 2.07, CW: 933,000

-Adults 18-49:

ABC: 1.2 rating/5 share, NBC: 1.0/ 4, CBS: 0.7/ 3, Fox: 0.6/ 2, CW: 0.3/ 1

ABC led this second Friday in July, but under five- million viewers and a 1.2 rating/5 share among adults 18-49, on average, is not impressive. Aside for 20/20 on ABC and Dateline on NBC, the evening was riddled with repeats. And based on these encore telecasts, Shark Tank on ABC is poised for victory among adults 18-49 on the alphabet net next season at 8 p.m. ET (until sitcoms Last Man Standing and Malibu Country step in); relocated NBC sitcoms Whitney and Community are doomed; and CBS was wise to hold back tired Undercover Boss until midseason.

Jennifer Lopez to Exit American Idol
One day after the announcement of Steven Tyler exiting Fox’s American Idol came word that Jennifer Lopez will also bid adieu to her judging chair. Lopez, like Tyler, joined Idol two seasons ago and the ratings sharply deteriorated. There is no official word at present on replacements for the duo, but the latest rumors are Miley Cyrus, former Idol contestants Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert and Carrie Underwood, and the legendary Aretha Franklin. American Idol returns for its 12th season in January with Ryan Seacrest as host.

Good Afternoon America on ABC Continues to Lag
The positive news for ABC’s Good Afternoon American on Thursday was consistency, with a 1.5 rating/4 share in the weighted metered market households equal to Wednesday. But this fourth telecast was still 29 percent below former occupant One Life to Live in July 2011 (2.1/ 6), and 17 percent beneath the lead-in average (1.8/ 5). Results in the three key demos…women 18-49, women 25-54 and women 18-34…were also on the downside as follows:

Women 18-49:
July 2011: 1.0/ 7, Lead-in: 0.8/ 6, Good Afternoon America: 0.7/ 5

Women 25-54:
July 2011: 1.2/ 8, Lead-in: 1.0. 7, Good Afternoon America: 0.8/ 6

Women 18-34:
July 2011: 0.6/ 4, Lead-in: 0.5/ 4, Good Afternoon America: 0.4/ 3

Viewers watching ABC in daytime are still missing their canceled soaps, no doubt.

Remembering Celeste Holm
Academy Award winner Celeste Holm, who took home the Oscar as Best Supporting Actress in 1948 for Gentleman’s Agreement, died yesterday morning at her apartment at Central Park West in New York City. She was 95 and was recently hospitalized for dehydration following the well-publicized fire in Robert De Niro’s apartment in the same building.

Born April 29, 1917 in New York City, Holm studied acting at the University of Chicago and made her debut on the Broadway stage in 1936 at just 19. After a successful early run on Broadway, including in Oklahoma!, Holm relocated to Hollywood for her first film, Three Little Girls in Blue, in 1946. Two years after winning the Oscar, she received back-to-back nominations for Come to the Stable in 1950 and All About Eve in 1951, both in the supporting actress category. She also received two Emmy Award nominations (for syndicated Insight in 1968 and miniseries Backstairs at the White House in 1979), and was a series regular in sitcoms Honestly Celeste (1954) and Nancy (1970-71), crime dramas Jessie (1984) and Christine Cromwell (1989-90), which was one of the rotating elements of the ABC Mystery Movie, and Touched By an Angel spin-off Promised Land (from 1996-99). Holm also appeared in the 1985 season of serialized drama Falcon Crest and in the 1991-92 season of ABC daytime drama Loving.

Holm was married five times and is survived by fifth husband, Frank Basile, two sons and three grandchildren. Her final marriage to Basile in 2004, who is 45 years her junior, resulted in a bitter legal battle between she and her sons. The family is asking that any memorial donations be made to UNICEF or to The Lillian Booth Actors Home of The Actors Fund in Englewood, New Jersey.
