The home of America’s Got Talent, NBC, topped the overnights on this third Wednesday in July, beating second-place CBS by 26 percent. Next was Fox, which will be competitive among adults 18-49 thanks to Hell’s Kitchen and Masterchef, followed by distant ABC and The CW.
In second cycle season premiere news, Canadian drama The L.A. Complex on The CW was a bust, as usual, with a very last-place 0.5 rating/1 share in the overnights at 9 p.m. While you have to give the network credit for making an attempt this summer, the audience is just not responding. Earlier in the evening on The CW was a repeat of Hart of Dixie, which scored a 0.6/ 1 (#5) at 8 p.m. Anchoring Tuesday next season (into new drama Emily Owens, M.D.) will be no easy task for soon-to-be sophomore Hart of Dixie.
First overall for the evening was a two-hour edition of America’s Got Talent on NBC, which averaged a healthy 6.6/11 from 8-10 p.m. (peaking at a 6.9/11 in the 9:30 p.m. half-hour). But one year earlier, the perennial summer talent competition was stronger at a 7.6/13 in the Tuesday 9 p.m. hour (on 7/19/11). Despite the ample lead-in support, Love in the Wild at 10 p.m. dropped to third with a 2.6/ 5. Comparably, retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of America’s Got Talent was just 38 percent for the Jenny McCarthy hosted relationship-themed reality/competition.
In week two news, another double dose of improvisational Trust Us With Your Life on ABC was a complete bust at an average (and fourth-place) 1.6/ 3 from 9-10 p.m. The first half-hour scored a 1.7/ 3 at 9 p.m., followed by a 1.5/ 2 at 9:30 p.m.; and the two half-hours dipped, on average, by 29 percent from one week earlier (2.1/ 3 on July 10). That overnight performance translated into just 3.18 million viewers and a 1.1/ 3 among adults 18-49, based on the Live Plus Same Day results.
Comparably, Trust Us With Your Live dipped from the 8:30 p.m. portion of lead-in Wipeout (2.8/ 5) by 43 percent (with Wipeout at a fourth-place 3.0/ 5 from 8-9 p.m.).
Also in week two news was NY Med from ABC News at a second-place 3.6/ 7 at 10 p.m., which built by 140 percent from the 9:30 p.m. portion of Trust Us With Your Life. One week earlier, NY Med kicked-off with a 4.4/ 7.
Elsewhere, CBS populated the evening with encore telecasts of NCIS (#2: 4.9/ 8), spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles (#2t, 4.1/ 6) and a Tuesday 10 p.m. telecast of Person of Interest (#1: 3.9/ 7). And Fox was at typical levels, which is a positive, care of Hell’s Kitchen (#3: 4.2/ 7) and Masterchef (#2t, 4.1/ 7).

Weekly Primetime Scorecard
Big Brother is back and the initial two-day results (on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET and Sunday at 8 p.m. ET) were right on track from one year earlier. But it was not enough to lift repeat-drenched CBS out of the No. 3 spot demographically. CBS did dominate the week in total viewers, as it always does, and the home of Gordon Ramsay, Fox, led in the three surveyed demographics: adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and adults 18-34. ABC, which finished second in the trio of demos, was close to year-ago levels, as was Fox and The CW. But CBS and NBC dipped by double-digit percentages.

Solid TNT Monday
Week two of new TNT drama Perception, starring Eric McCormack, averaged 5.5 million viewers in the Monday 9 p.m. hour on July 16, according to the Live Plus Same Day results, with week-to-week growth demographically of 12 percent in adults 18-49 (1.2 million) and eight percent in adults 25-54 (1.8 million). Lead-in The Closer, which has four episodes left, averaged 6.4 million viewers, topping last week’s summer season premiere by four percent.
Including DVR usage, The Closer’s premiere episode increased from 6.1 million viewers to 7.8 million viewers on July 9, while the episode’s demos have expanded to 1.7 million adults 18-49 and 2.3 million adults 25-54. Perception’s premiere episode rose from 5.6 to 6.8 million viewers, with 1.5 million adults 18-49 and 2.0 million adults 25-54.
TLC to Launch Big Tiny
TLC has a new docu-series up its sleeve: Big Tiny, which will follow the lives of the world’s smallest siblings, Bridgette (Bri) and Bradley (Brad) Jordan. At 27-inches tall, Bri tips the scale at just 18 pounds, while Brad is 38-inches tall and weighs 35 pounds. The two live in Sandoval, Illinois with their mother Christy and average-sized older sister Brandi. Described as a “captivating new series that gives an inside look at how two unique siblings make something big out of being tiny,” Big Tiny debuts on the cable net on Monday, August 13 at 10 p.m. ET.
Minute to Win It Heads to GSN
GSN has acquired the off-network rights to 68 one-hour episodes of game show Minute to Win It from NBCUniversal Cable & New Media Distribution. Hosted by Food Network personality Guy Fieri, four episodes of Minute to Win It will air in the Tuesday 7-11 p.m. ET block beginning on Tuesday, July 24. Minute to Minute, which is no longer in original production, was awarded the C21/Frapa Award for Best Studio Based Game Show format at the 2010 Mipcom television festival in Cannes, France.
CMT Greenlights Production on Four New Series
CMT has commenced production on four additional new series, which will join the previously announced Trinity 911 (working title) and Bounty Hunters. Debuting this fall are Redneck Intervention, which will feature a former redneck in each episode who is confronted by family and friends who believe he or she should return to their country roots; and Chainsaw Gang, a docu-series focused on country’s premiere chainsaw artists. The official start date for Redneck Intervention is Saturday, September 15.
Stated for 2013 are Full Metal Racket, which features three generations of a family owned gun range in Knob Creek, Kentucky; and Rock Raiders, which follows collectors Robert Reynolds and Stephen Shutts as they travel across the country in search of music history’s most-treasured finds. Both are working titles.
