The annual All-Star Baseball Game led Fox to an easy Tuesday overnight victory, with a hefty 47 percent advantage over second-place NBC. Third overall was a night of repeats on CBS, followed by disappointing ABC, which featured two series premieres, and lowly The CW.
The All-Star Baseball Game averaged an estimated 8.1 rating/14 share in the overnights from 8-10:30 p.m., peaking in the 10 p.m. half-hour at a 9.1/15. One year earlier, the game also scored an 8.1/14 (on Tuesday 7/12/11), and that translated into 10.97 million viewers and a 3.1 rating/10 share among adults 18-49, according to the Live Plus Same Day ratings. Keep in mind that results for any live sporting event are always approximate.
In series-premiere news, two episodes of improvisational ABC chuckler Trust Us With Your Life was DOA at a 2.1/ 3 in the overnights at 9 p.m. and a 2.0/ 3 at 9:30 p.m. Both episodes finished a distant fourth and the show, on average, dipped by 29 percent from failed year-ago occupant 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show (2.9/ 5 on 7/12/11). The debut of NY Med from ABC News at 10 p.m., which will likely skew older, perked up to second in the 10 p.m. hour with a 4.4/ 7. Comparably, that was 120 percent above the 9:30 p.m. portion of Trust Us With Your Life and 69 percent above year-ago occupant Combat Hospital (2.6/ 4 on 7/12/11). Thumbs up, Dr. Oz!
Earlier in the evening on ABC was tired Wipeout at a fourth-place 2.9/ 5 from 8-9 p.m., which was 12 percent below a repeat of the show on the year-ago evening (3.3/ 6 on 7/12/11).
Over at NBC, two-hours of America’s Got Talent held up well opposite The All-Star Game with a solid second-place 6.9/12 from 8-10 p.m. Note to Howard Stern: You are so right about Big Barry. Next was lackluster Love In the Wild at a last-place 2.7/ 5 in the 10 p.m. hour, which was 62 percent below the 9:30 p.m. portion of America’s Got Talent (7.2/12).
Elsewhere, CBS aired encore telecasts of NCIS (#3: 5.4/ 9), spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles (#3: 4.1/ 7) and another episode of 48 Hours Mystery (#3: 3.6/ 6). And The CW populated the night with repeats of Hart of Dixie (#5: 0.6/ 1) and The L.A. Complex (#5: 0.3/ 1).

General Hospital’s Gold Medal Moments on SOAPnet
Serialized ABC daytime institution General Hospital will be featured on SOAPnet in a block of episodes chosen by the audience themed “General Hospital’s Gold Medal Moments.” It begins on Monday, July 30 and runs through Friday, August 10 at 8 p.m. ET. Viewers voted over 37,000 times on SOAPnet’s Facebook page on their favorite episodes from throughout the years, with a different poll each weekday. Additional airings of the chosen episodes will air Sunday, August 7 and August 14 from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. ET.
Sluggish Good Afternoon America Opener on ABC
Monday marked the debut of newsmagazine Good Afternoon America, which is initially slated on ABC in the weekday 2 p.m. ET hour for nine weeks. Anchored by Lara Spencer and Josh Elliott, initial interest from the audience will determine, of course, if this extension of Good Morning America will continue past the summer. As it stands, veteran serial General Hospital will move into the 2 p.m. hour in the fall, leading into new Disney-ABC talker Katie, hosted by Katie Couric.
One day of metered market data does not a hit or miss make, of course. But based on the weighted averages in the 56-metered markets for Monday, July 9, Good Afternoon America disappointed with a 1.7 rating/5 share in households. Comparably, the lead-in average was a 1.8/ 5 and the July 2011 time period was a 2.0/ 6. Good Afternoon America also lost steam from both benchmarks in two of the three key demos…women 25-54 and women 18-34…as follows:

Weekly Primetime Scorecard
Three networks…CBS, NBC and Fox…dominated this quiet Independence Day holiday week, with NBC’s rare victory in adults 25-54. And that, of course, was a result of America’s Got Talent, which may be down but is far from out. CBS was the most-watched, while Fox was No. 1 in adults 18-49 and adults 18-34. Aside from Fox, which was close to year-ago levels, erosion was the noticeable observation, with ABC, CBS, NBC and The CW all down by double-digit percentages.
Factoring in the Spanish speaking networks, Univision finished on top in both adults 18-49 (1.3/ 4 – tied in rating with Fox) and adults 18-34 (1.3/ 5); marking only the third time it has ever done so.

Solid Sampling for Perception on TNT
TNT drama Perception, with Eric McCormack as an eccentric neuroscience professor with paranoid schizophrenia who is recruited by the FBI to help solve complex cases, debuted on Monday with 5.6 million viewers at 10 p.m. ET, according to the Live Plus Same Day results. Comparably, Perception now ranks second behind the network’s Dallas as the most-watched cable series launch this year to-date. Retention out of lead-in The Closer (6.1 million at 9 p.m.), which returned for the first of its final six episodes, was a solid 92 percent.
In key demos, additional retention for Perception out of The Closer was 92 percent in adults 18-49 (1.1 vs. 1.2 million) and 88 percent in adults 25-54 (1.5 vs. 1.7 million).
FEARnet Adds Weekend Block
FEARnet, the cable destination populated with horror, suspense and thriller content, is adding a new two-hour weekend programming block beginning on Saturday, August 18. Dubbed “Funhouse,” the Saturday 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET daypart (which will be repeated in the same time frame on Sunday), will feature animated half-hours The Real Ghostbusters and Tales from the Cryptkeeper, and live action half-hours Eerie, Indiana and Dark Oracle. The Real Ghostbusters, Tales from the Cryptkeeper and Eerie, Indiana have not been broadcast in over one decade, while Dark Oracle has never been available to U.S. stations.
This new “Funhouse” is the first time FEARnet will feature both animated and live-action acquired series in a combined themed block of time.
