Today in TV History
Late Night With David Letterman on NBC concluded in 1993 after 11 seasons. Letterman exited for CBS, of course, after NBC gave The Tonight Show hosting spot to Jay Leno. There were also two series finales: Comedy-variety The Jonathan Winters Show in 1957 (which was just 15-minutes in length) and sitcom Day By Day (with Julia Louis-Dreyfus pre-Seinfeld) in 1989. Both also aired on NBC.

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Sunday 6/26/11
CBS: + 8, NBC: – 3, Fox: -11, ABC: -18

Rating Results:
With game six of The NBA Finals in the potential competitive mix, ABC ducked by populating the evening with encore telecasts of America’s Funniest Home Videos and recent returnees Secret Millionaire and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Only 20 percent of last night’s line-up, in fact, was original. That said, CBS finished first in the overnights with its combination of granddaddy 60 Minutes (#1: 6.0 rating/11 share), a Sunday 8 p.m. repeat of Person of Interest (#1: 3.8/ 6) and encores of The Good Wife (#1: 3.4/ 5) and The Mentalist (#1: 3.4/ 6), which airs in the Sunday 10 p.m. time period next season. As a suggestion, it might be more beneficial if CBS flipped The Mentalist with The Good Wife.

In the No. 2 spot was NBC care of Olympic Trials: Track & Field Finals, Day 1 (#2: 3.3/ 6 at 7 p.m.), an 8 p.m. edition of Dateline (#2: 3.6/ 6), and a repeat of America’s Got Talent (2.8/ 5) from 9-11 p.m.

Elsewhere, aforementioned ABC filled this fourth Sunday in June with repeats of America’s Funniest Home Videos (#3: 3.0/ 6 at 7 p.m.), Secret Millionaire (#3: 2.5/ 4 at 8 p.m.) and Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition (#3: 1.8/ 3 from 9-11 p.m.). And Fox aired encore telecasts of American Dad (#4: 1.2/ 2 at 7 p.m.), The Cleveland Show (#4: 1.3/ 2 at 7:30 p.m.) and recent The Fox 25th Anniversary Special #4: 1.7/ 3 from 8-10 p.m.).

-Total Viewers:
Fox: 3.80 million, CBS: 3.36, NBC: 3.09, ABC: 2.54

-Adults 18-49:
Fox: 0.9 rating/4 share, NBC: 0.8/ 3, ABC and CBS: 0.6/ 2 each

Baseball on Fox led the uneventful Saturday landscape, with an estimated 3.80 million viewers and a 0.9 rating/4 share in primetime. Elsewhere, NBC aired The Olympic Trials: Track & Field Finals, Day 1 from 8-9:30 p.m. and burned-off another episode of canceled drama The Firm; ABC ran a double encore dose of axed Extreme Makeover: Home Edition; and CBS sitcom How To Be a Gentleman officially concluded at 8:30 p.m. ET. Our annual listing of “TV Turkeys” at Thanksgiving will definitely have a spot for abysmal How To Be a Gentleman.

FRIDAY 6/22/12

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 4.83 million, ABC: 4.76, NBC: 4.44, Fox: 2.23, CW: 1.31

-Adults 18-49:
ABC: 1.1 rating/4 share, NBC: 1.0/ 4, CBS and Fox: 0.7/ 3 each, CW: 0.3/ 1

With only newsmagazines 20/20 on ABC and Dateline on NBC in originals, CBS was the most-watched network and the alphabet net was No. 1 among adults 18-49. Dateline was tops for the evening with 5.56 million viewers and a 1.3 rating/5 share in the demo from 9-11 p.m.; encore telecasts of relocated sitcoms Whitney and Community on NBC continue to show no interest in the Friday 8 p.m. hour; and The CW is approximate because local sports may be included in the mix.

Jennifer Hudson Heads to Smash
Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson will guest star in a multi-episode story arc on sophomore musical drama Smash on NBC next season as a Broadway star who impacts the lives of Karen (Katherine McPhee) and Ivy (Megan Ivy). Her first appearance will coincide with the season premiere in midseason.

Daytime Emmy Award Winners
HLN kept the tradition going with the live broadcast of The 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards from The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on Saturday. General Hospital, ABC’s sole surviving daytime drama, won its 11th Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, with veteran Anthony Geary, also from the soon-to-be 50 year-old institution, snagging his seventh victory as Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Poking fun at the endangered genre, Geary playfully thanked ABC for renewing General Hospital instead of axing it to make room for “Celebrity Boob Jobs Gone Wrong.”

Overall, ABC (thanks to General Hospital) and syndicated programming led with five Daytime Emmy Awards each, followed by three for NBC; two each for CBS and Food Network; and one each for The Hub, Nickelodeon, PBS and

The cancellations of All My Children and One Live to Live were on the forefront courtesy of Susan Lucci, who expressed her gratitude for the “part of a lifetime” as Erica Kane on All My Children. Her former co-star, Cameron Matheson, and One Live to Live matriarch Erika Slezak joined her onstage.

NBC’s The Today Show, which has been in the press in recent weeks regarding the expected departure of Ann Curry, was named Best Morning Show, while absent Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa snagged two trophies: Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show and Talk Show Host. “We miss Regis,” said executive producer Michael Gelman.

Other notable winners included The Dr. Oz Show in the category of Talk Show, Informative; Jeopardy! for Game/Audience Participation Show, both return winners; and, surprisingly, low-profile Last Shot With Judge Gun for Legal/Courtoon Program. The Bold and The Beautiful star Heather Tom, meanwhile, is now the first actress to win in all three actress categories for the same role — Younger, Supporting, and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama.
