Today in TV History:

Monday, September 26
Six series premiered on this day: The Beverly Hillbillies (CBS) in 1962, which topped the charts in its first two seasons; Gilligan’s Island (CBS) in 1964; Hawaii Five-O (CBS) in 1968; The Brady Bunch (ABC) in 1969; Knight Rider (NBC) in 1982; and Jake and the Fatman (CBS) in 1987.  Of the six, Hawaii Five-O had the longest run at 12 seasons.  The Brady Bunch to-date, meanwhile, has spawned three scripted spinoffs, one animated half hour, two theatricals, three made-for TV movies, a reality series, stage plays and musicals, countless specials and reunions, fan sites, and books.

Ratings Breakdown:
CBS led opening season Friday in both total viewers and adults 18-49, but its advantage over No. 2 NBC was much smaller in the demo.  CBS bested NBC by a hefty 4.83 million viewers, while inching past NBC and Fox by just one-tenth of a rating point among adults 18-49.  Regardless, a win is still a win and the Eye net is having a stellar debut week.  On the flipside is corporate cousin The CW, which finished in the distant No. 5 spot with notable year-to-year losses.

In series-premiere news, CBS drama A Gifted Man was adequately sampled at 9.31 million viewers (#1) and a second-place 1.4 rating/5 share among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m.  One year earlier, former time period occupant Medium, which exited in midseason, averaged 6.10 million viewers an equal 1.4/ 5 in the demo on 9/24/10.  As expected, A Gifted Man will skew older.

A Gifted Man led into the successful season-premieres of crime solvers CSI: NY (Viewers: #1, 10.66 million; A18-49: #1, 1.8/ 6) and Blue Bloods (Viewers: #1, 11.85 million; A18-49: #2, 2.0/ 6) from 9-11 p.m., which was the most-watched show of the evening.  Both CSI: NY and Blue Bloods were on par with year-ago opening levels.

NBC kicked-off the evening with encore telecasts of sitcoms Up All Night (Viewers: #4, 3.16 million; A18-49: #4, 0.8/ 3) and Whitney (Viewers: #4, 3.09 million; A18-49: #4, 0.9/ 3) from 8-9 p.m., which led into the season-premiere of newsmagazine Dateline.  Dateline was on the map with 7.11 million viewers (#2) and a 2.0/ 6 among adults 18-49 (#2) from 9-11 p.m., finishing first in the demo in three of the four half-hours.  Here is the half-hour breakdown:

Dateline (NBC)
9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 5.90 million (#2), A18-49: 1.6/ 5 (#2t)
9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 6.88 million (#2), A18-49: 1.9/ 6 (#1)
10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 7.41 million (#2), A18-49: 2.1/ 6 (#1)
10:30 p.m. – Viewers: 8.25 million (#2), A18-49: 2.4/ 7 (#1)

For a typical low HUT-level Friday, consider Dateline a “winner.”  Dateline will remain two-hours on Friday until upcoming drama Grimm debuts in the 9 p.m. hour on October 21.

Fox aired two season-premieres — Kitchen Nightmares and Fringe — and they performed as follows:

8:00 p.m. – Kitchen Nightmares
Viewers: 3.84 million (#3), A18-49: 1.6/ 6 (#1)

9:00 p.m. – Fringe
Viewers: 3.53 million (#4), A18-49: 1.5/ 5 (#3)

Although Fringe is certainly not the player it once was, compared to year-ago occupant The Good Guys (Viewers: #5, 2.80 million; A18-49: #5, 0.9/ 3 on 9/24/10), this was an increase of 730,000 viewers and 67 percent among adults 18-49.

The CW also populated the evening with two season premieres, Nikita and Supernatural, and the results were dismal.  Take a look:

8:00 p.m. – Nikita
Viewers: 1.88 million (#5), A18-49: 0.6/ 2 (#5)

9:00 p.m. – Supernatural
Viewers: 1.95 million (#5), A18-49: 0.8/ 2 (#5)

Comparatively, Nikita slipped from year-ago occupant Smallville (Viewers: 2.98 million; A18-49: 1.3/ 5 on 9/24/10) by 1.10 million viewers and 54 percent among adults 18-49.  And Supernatural was down by 940,000 viewers (2.89 to 1.98 million) and 38 percent in the demo (1.3/ 4 to 0.8/ 2).  Ouch!

ABC took a pass on this first Friday of the new season and filled the 8-10 p.m. block with repeats of the two Modern Family episodes from Wednesday (Viewers: #2, avg. 3.90 million; A18-49: #3, avg. 1.0/ 4 from 8-9 p.m.), and the pilot episode of Revenge (Viewers: #3, 4.13 million; #4, 1.0/ 3 at 9 p.m.).  Veteran 20/20 capped off the evening with just 3.33 million viewers and a 1.0/ 3 among adults 18-49 – last ion both categories.  And there you have it…the first Friday of 2011-12.

In season-premiere news, long-running 48 Hours Mystery on CBS ranked second in the 10 p.m. hour, with 4.97 million viewers and a 1.2/ 4 in the demo.  Comparably, that was close to a repeat of the pilot episode of lead-in Unforgettable (Viewers: #2, 4.95 million; A18-49: #2, 1.0/ 3 at 9 p.m.).  One year earlier, 48 Hours Mystery opened stronger at 6.28 million viewers and a 1.3/ 4 among adults 18-49 on 9/25/10.  Take a look at the slippage.

48 Hours Mystery (CBS)
9/25/10 – Viewers: 6.28 million, A18-49: 1.3/ 4
9/24/11 – Viewers: 4.97 million, A18-49: 1.2/ 4
Percent Change – Viewers: -21, A18-49: -8

Earlier in the evening on CBS was a repeat of the pilot episode of Person of Interest at 3.94 million viewers (#3) and a 0.9/ 3 in the demo (#3) at 8 p.m.

Fox has sprung a considerable leak at 8 p.m., with veteran Cops at just 2.89 million viewers (#4) and a 0.9/ 3 among adults 18-49 (#2) at 8 p.m.  Take a look at the year-to-year erosion:

Cops (Fox)
9/25/10 – Viewers: 4.11 million, A18-49: 1.4/ 5
9/24/11 – Viewers: 2.89 million, A18-49: 0.9/ 3
Percent Change – Viewers: -30, A18-49: -36

A repeat of Cops at 8:30 p.m. perked up to 3.30 million viewers (#4) and a 1.1/ 4 (#2) among adults 18-49.  That led into repeats of animated American Dad (Viewers: #4, 1.70 million; A18-49: #3t, 0.7/ 2) and The Cleveland Show (Viewers: #4, 1.77 million; A18-49: #3t, 0.8/ 2) from 9-10 p.m.

NBC populated the evening with encore telecasts of Harry’s Law (Viewers: #2, 3.99 million; A18-49: #4, 0.6/ 2), the pilot episode of Prime Suspect (Viewers: #3, 4.82 million; A18-49: #4, 0.7/ 2) and Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #3, 4.72 million; A18-49: #3, 0.8/ 2).  Encore episodes of Harry’s Law will continue in the Saturday 8 p.m. time period until further notice.

60 Minutes (CBS), The OT (Fox), Sunday Night Football: Pittsburgh vs. Indianapolis (NBC), The Amazing Race (CBS), The Good Wife (CBS), Pan Am (ABC)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
American Dad (Fox)

Ratings Breakdown:
Football populated NBC remained in the Sunday overnight winners circle care of The Pittsburgh Steelers versus the Indianapolis Colts.  Next was CBS, which is estimated, followed by Fox and ABC, which was off and positively running with 1963 set drama Pan Am.

The Pittsburgh/Indianapolis match-up averaged an estimated 13.0 rating/20 share in the overnights from 8:30-11 p.m., with the half-hour breakdown as follows.  Keep in mind, of course, that results for any live sporting event are always approximate.

Sunday Night Football (NBC)
8:30 p.m.: 12.7/20 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 12.8/19 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 13.3/20 (#1)
10:00 p.m.: 13.1/20 (#1)
10:30 p.m.: 13.1/21 (#1)

Earlier in the evening on NBC was pre-game Football Night in America as follows:

Football Night in America (NBC0
7:00 p.m.: 1.7/ 3 (#4)
7:30 p.m.: 3.9/ 7(#3)
8:00 p.m.: 8.6/14 (#1)

In series-premiere news, highly publicized drama Pan Am on ABC was widely sampled, with a second-place 8.7/14 in the overnights at 10 p.m.  Comparably, that outdelivered year-ago occupant Brothers & Sisters (7.0/11 on 9/26/10) by 24 percent.  And it built from the season-premiere of lead-in Desperate Housewives (#3, 7.1/10 at 9 p.m.) by 23 percent.  One year earlier, Desperate Housewives opened the season with a much heftier a 9.2/13 on 9/26/10.

From 7-9 p.m. on ABC was the two-hour season-premiere of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition at a 4.6/ 7, building by half-hour as follows:

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ABC)
7:00 p.m.: 3.4/ 6 (#3)
7:30 p.m.: 3.8/ 6 (#4)
8:00 p.m.: 5.0/ 8 (#4)
8:30 p.m.: 6.1/ 9 (#3)

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, which was on par with one year earlier, moves into the Friday 8 p.m. hour on Oct. 21.  If upcoming scripted drama Once Upon a Time bombs (and chances are it will), EMHE is likely to return right back to high HUT-level Sunday.

Due to an estimated 30-minute football overrun on the East Coast, all individual program results for CBS are approximate.  The season-premiere of granddaddy newsmagazine 60 Minutes opened the evening with a solid (and second place) 9.5/16 in the overnights at 7 p.m.  That led into the season-premiere episodes of The Amazing Race (#2: 7.1/10 at 8 p.m.), relocated The Good Wife (#2: 8.0/12 at 9 p.m.), and veteran CSI: Miami (#3: 6.9/11 at 10 p.m.), which just entered season No. 10.  Although ABC’s competing Desperate Housewives will certainly have an advantage over The Good Wife in adults 18-49, The Good Wife beat the aging gang on Wisteria Lane by 13 percent in the overnights.  Both The Aazing Race and CSI: Miami were close to year-ago opening levels.  Desperate Housewives dropped by 23 percent.

Over at Fox, an approximate 30-minute football overrun kicked-off the night at a dominate 13.8/24 in the overnights at 7 p.m., which led into an 8.2/14 for post game The OT at 7:30 p.m.  Fox’s strength falls within the young adult demos from 8-10 p.m., but season premiere episodes of its animated block performed as follows in the overnights compared to one year earlier:

8:00 p.m. The Simpsons (season premiere) – 5.3/ 8 (#3): + 4 percent (5.1/ 8 on 9/26/10)
8:30 p.m. The Cleveland Show (season premiere) – 3.8/ 6 (#4): -10 percent (4.2/ 6 on 9/26/10)
9:00 p.m. Family Guy (season premiere) – 4.7/ 7 (#4): -22 percent (6.0/ 9 on 9/26/10)
9:30 p.m. American Dad (season premiere) – 3.6/ 5 (#4): -42 percent (from a 6.2/ 9 for Family Guy on 9/26/10)

New Series Report Card – Wednesday, Sept. 21
Two new series premiered on Wednesday this week (The X Factor on Fox and Revenge on ABC), two debuted in their time periods (NBC sitcoms Up All Night and Free Agents), and non-scripted H8R on The CW aired its second Wednesday 8 p.m. telecast.  Here is how they fared based on the Live Play Same Day ratings (in order of total viewers):

The X Factor (Fox) – Wed. 8 p.m. (series premiere)
Viewers: 12.49 million (#1 in time period), A18-49: 4.4rating/12 share (#1)
Grade: B+

What looks good on paper is actually disappointing given the hype and expectations.  American Idol this is not.

Revenge (ABC) – Wed. 10 p.m. (series premiere)
Viewers: 10.92 million (#2), A18-49: 3.3/ 9 (#1)
Grade: B

Airing out of the season-premiere of Modern Family (Viewers: 14.53 million; A18-49: 6.1/15 from 9-10 p.m.), there was every reason to believe unusual looking Revenge would get sampled.  But expect erosion of a typical 10 to 20 percent this week.

Up All Night (NBC) – Wed. 8 p.m.
Viewers: 6.05 million (#4), A18-49: 2.4/ 7 (#4)
Grade: C

Considering the competition — Survivor (CBS), The X Factor (Fox) and The Middle (ABC) — Up All Night is not all that bad.

Free Agents (NBC) – Wed. 8:30 p.m.
Viewers: 3.87 million (#), A18-49: 1.3/ 4 (#4)
Grade: F

Erosion out of Up All Night in the higher HUT-level 8:30 p.m. half-hour was a significant 2.18 million viewers and 46 percent among adults 18-49.  If episode three dips any further, it could be curtains for Free Agents.

H8R (CW) – Wed. 8 p.m.
Viewers: 1.03 million (#5), A18-49: 0.4/ 1 (#5)
Grade: F

Tick, tock…the cancellation clock is ticking.

Debuting Today – The Chew on ABC
Just when you thought there were enough daytime talk shows, along comes ABC entry The Chew, which replaces long-running soap All My Children.  The Chew is a food-themed hour of light banter hosted by Iron Chef America’s Mario Batali and Michael Symon, Top Chef alum Carla Hall, entertaining expert Clinton Kelly, and health and wellness enthusiast Daphne Oz.  Considering we already have The View on ABC and The Talk on CBS (not to mention the endless first-run syndication entries), was The Chew really necessary?  And will the target female audience tune-in instead of old faithful All My Children?  Stay tuned.

Steven Bochco to Return to ABC
ABC has confirmed a deal with ABC with former NYPD Blue creator Steven Bochco for a new drama called Legal Affairs, which will focus on a prestigious Los Angeles law firm.  Bochco, of course, also created the similar sounding L.A. Law, which aired on NBC from 1986 to 1994.  Legal Affairs is expected to debut in 2012.

Cable Ratings Scorecard – Thursday 9/22/11
Jersey Shore on MTV continues to dominate the Thursday cable troops at a considerable advantage over the No. 2 occupant.  But 6.49 million viewers and a 3.5 rating among key adults 18-49 was actually a season low this week.  Project Runway on Lifetime finished a distant second in total viewers, while FX sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was No. 2 among adults 18-49.

Here are the individual cable series results (ranked in order of total viewers) for Thursday, September 22:

Jersey Shore (MTV) – Viewers: 6.49 million (#1 overall), A18-49: 3.5 rating (#1)

Bill Cunningham (Tribune) – 20 markets
Sept. 2010 time period: 1.1/ 4, Lead-in: 1.2/ 4, Bill Cunningham: 0.8/ 3
