NBC Wins; Mixed Results for NBC Sitcom Previews; CW Disappoints

Wednesday 9/14/11

NBC    8.2/13
CBS    5.7/ 9
ABC    3.4/ 6
Fox     2.1/ 3
CW     1.5/ 2

-Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening (Wednesday 9/15/10):
ABC: _21, CBS: + 4, NBC: -12, CW: -29, Fox: -40

America’s Got Talent (NBC), Survivor: South Pacific (CBS), Up All Night (NBC)

-Successful Summer Season:
Big Brother (CBS)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
H8R (CW), Buried Treasure (Fox), America’s Next Top Model (CW), Free Agents (NBC), Primetime: Nightline – Celebrity Secrets (ABC)

Ratings Breakdown:
Led by the season-finale of America’s Got Talent, NBC dominated this final Wednesday of the 2010-11 season, with a hefty 44 percent advantage over second-place CBS.  In the distant No. 3 spot was ABC, followed by Fox and The CW, which was off but not necessarily running with its combination of H8R and the new season of America’s Next Top Model.

America’s Got Talent concluded another successful summer season with a solid 9.3 rating/15 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., building by half-hour as follows:

America’s Got Talent (NBC)
8:00 p.m.: 8.2/14 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 8.8/14 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 9.7/15 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 10.6/17 (#1)

Compared to the year-ago season ender (10.4/16 on 9/15/10), America’s Got Talent dipped by 11 percent.  NBC utilized the 10 p.m. hour to preview upcoming Wednesday 8-9 p.m. sitcoms Up All Night and Free Agents.  Up All Night led the 10 p.m. half-hour with a 7.5/12, which maintained 71 percent of the 9:30 p.m. portion of America’s Got Talent.  Consider that a positive.  But Free Agents at 10:30 p.m. slipped to second with a 4.5/ 8 at 10:30 p.m., which dipped by 40 percent from Up All Night.  Consider that a definite negative.  Regardless, there is no reason to believe either comedy will generate much interest in the Wednesday 8 p.m. next week opposite debuting The X Factor on Fox, Survivor on CBS, and two episodes of sitcom The Middle on ABC.

In other series-premiere news, non-scripted H8R on The CW was left at the starting gate with a distant last-place 1.2/ 2 in the overnights at 8 p.m.  Compared to America’s Got Talent in the Wednesday 8 p.m. hour one year earlier (2.4/ 4 on 9/15/10), this was a loss of a hefty 50 percent.  The all-star of America’s Next Top Model, meanwhile, opened with a diluted and last-place 1.8/ 3 at 9 p.m.  While growth of 64 percent out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of H8R (1.1/ 2) is a positive worth noting, erosion from the aforementioned year-ago overnight delivery was significant at 25 percent.  It is time for Top Model to take a rest.

In other season-premiere news, Survivor: South Pacific on CBS was amply sampled at a second-place 6.6/11 from 8-9:30 p.m.  Compared to the launch of Survivor: Nicaragua one year earlier (7.1/12 on 9/15/10), this was down by only seven percent.  Stalwart Survivor lives on.  Survivor led into the 90-minute season-finale of summer favorite Big Brother, which scored a 4.8/ 8 from 9:30-11 p.m..  Comparably, that was right on par with the two-hour season ender one year earlier.  Here is the half-hour breakdown for both Survivor and Big Brother:

8:00 p.m. – Survivor: South Pacific: 6.5/11 (#2)
8:30 p.m. – Survivor: South Pacific: 6.6/11 (#2)
9:00 p.m. – Survivor: South Pacific: 6.7/11 (#2)
9:30 p.m. – Big Brother: 5.0/ 8 (#2)
10:00 p.m. – Big Brother: 4.8/ 8 (#2)
10:30 p.m. – Big Brother: 4.7/ 8 (#1)

Thank you Shelly for choosing the right person to win this season.

Over at Fox, the season (or series ender) of summer reality/competition Buried Treasure was buried at a distant fourth-place 2.1/ 4 in the overnights at 8 p.m.  That led into a repeat Buried Treasure at a 2.1/ 3 at 9 p.m.  Original or repeat – did not matter with bland Buried Treasure.

ABC populated the evening with two repeat episodes each of The Middle (#3: avg. 3.1/ 5 from 8-9 p.m.) and Modern Family #3: avg. 3.7/ 6 from 9-10 p.m.), and newsmagazine Primetime: Nightline – Celebrity Secrets (#3: 3.3/ 5 at 10 p.m.).

Next Wednesday will feature the series-premieres of ABC’s Revenge and Fox’s The X Factor; the time period premieres of NBC sitcoms Up All Night and Free Agents; and the season premieres of The Middle and Modern Family (two episodes each) on ABC; Criminal Minds and relocated CSI on CBS; and relocated Harry’s Law and Law & Order: SVU on NBC.

More Big Brother
CBS has picked up perennial summer reality competition Big Brother for a 14th edition, with the target launch next June.  As always, the hour is expected to air three times per week.  This summer’s edition of Big Brother was its highest rated since 2004, with year-to-year increases of 310,000 viewers (7.80 to 8.11 million), 11 percent in adults 18-49 (2.8/ 9 to 3.1/ 9) and 12 percent in adults 25-54 (3.3/ 9 to 3.7/10).

National Ringer Debut Ratings
Based on the Live Plus 3 ratings, drama Ringer on The CW kicked-off with 2.84 million viewers (#4 in the time period), a 1.1 rating/3 share among adults 18-34 (#2), and a 1.2/ 3 among adults 18-49 (#4) in the Tuesday 9 p.m. hour.  Compared to the season-premiere of lead-in 90210 (Viewers: 1.61 million; A18-34: 0.9/ 3; A18-49: 0.9/ 3 at 8 p.m.) that was an increase of 1.23 million viewers, 22 percent in adults 18-34, and 33 percent among adults 18-49.  Former occupant Life Unexpected opened the season one year earlier with 1.65 million viewers and a 0.8/ 2 in the demo on Sept. 14, 2010.  Opening Grade: B.

Handicapping the New Fall Series
Fox’s Terra Nova and New Girl

Terra Nova – Monday 8 p.m.
From executive producer Steven Spielberg, the focus is on an ordinary family on an incredible journey back to prehistoric Earth as a small part of a daring experiment to save the human race.  Jason O’Mara and Shelley Conn star.

-The Competition: Dancing With the Stars (ABC), How I Met Your Mother (CBS) and 2 Broke Girls (CBS), The Sing-Off (NBC) and Gossip Girl (CW)

The name Steven Spielberg adds a great deal of clout to this new series, as does the whole dinosaur element, of course.  But not everything he touches on the small screen turns to ratings gold (remember Amazing Stories in 1985-87?), something unproven anchoring an evening is a risk, and the novelty could quickly wear off if the special effects are not as impressive as in the pilot.  While you have to give Fox credit for trying something this ambitious, Terra Nova might have been better as a limited series.

-Chance of Survival for Terra Nova (Based on 1-1 to 10-1 odds):

New Girl – Tuesday 9 p.m.
After splitting with her boyfriend, a quirky elementary school teacher (Zooey Deschanel) moves in with three unruly guys (Jake M. Johnson, Max Greenfield and Damon Wayans Jr.).

-Lead-In: Glee
-The Competition:
Dancing With the Stars (ABC), NCIS: Los Angeles (CBS), The Biggest Loser (NBC), Ringer (CW)

The positive news from the get-go, no doubt, is leading out of Glee, which is still a solid young adult option.  And that alone is a virtual guarantee that fresh looking New Girl will get sampled.  The critics, meanwhile, have been very kind initially.  But former time period occupant Raising Hope (which shifts to Tuesday at 9:30 p.m.) lost about 35 to 40 percent of the lead-in and the competition remains steep.  While there is every reason to believe New Girl will at least match Raising Hope, facing the live Dancing With the Stars Results Show, NCIS and The Biggest Loser is certainly no easy feat.

-Chance of Survival for New Girl (Based on 1-1 to 10-1 odds):

Spike TV Renews Bar Rescue
Male-driven Spike TV has renewed recently introduced non-scripted Bar Rescue for a second season, with an order for 10 additional episodes.  Sunday’s telecast rose to a series high of 1.3 million viewers.

Cable Daily Scorecard – Tuesday, September 13
FX’s critically acclaimed Sons of Anarchy led the Tuesday cable troops, with 3.71 million viewers and a 2.0 rating among target adults 18-49.  Also of particular positive note were Teen Mom on MTV and Hardcore Pawn on truTV, which has lifted the growing cable net to noticeable year-to-year gains.

Here are the results on cable by series (and in order of total viewers) for Tuesday, September 13:

Sons of Anarchy (FX, 10 p.m.) – Viewers: 3.71 million (#1 overall), A18-49: 2.0 rating (#1)
Teen Mom (MTV, 10 p.m.) – Viewers: 3.23 million (#2), A18-49: 1.9 (#2)
Hardcore Pawn (truTV, 9 p.m.) – Viewers: 2.13 million (#3), A18-49: 1.0 (#3)
The Looney Tunes Show (Cartoon Network) – Viewers: 2.00 million (#4), A18-49: 0.3 (#15t)
Chopped (Food Network) – Viewers: 1.82 million (#5), A18-49: 0.8 (#4t)
Auction Hunters (Spike, 10 p.m.) – Viewers: 1.69 million (#6), A18-49: 0.7 (#6t)
Top Shot (History, 10 p.m.) – Viewers: 1.52 million (#7), A18-49: 0.8 (#4t)
Flipping Out Reunion (Bravo, 9 p.m.) – Viewers: 1.39 million (#8), A18-49: 0.7 (#6t)
Auction Kings (Discovery, 9:30 p.m.) – Viewers: 1.17 million (#9), A18-49: 0.4 (#10t)
Billy the Exterminator (A&E, 10 p.m.) – Viewers: 1.16 million (#10), A18-49: 0.5 (#8t)
What Not to Wear (TLC, 9 p.m.) – Viewers: 1.07 million (#11), A18-49: 0.4 (#10t)
Auction Kings (Discovery, 9 p.m.) – Viewers: 1.06 million (#12), A18-49: 0.4 (#10t)
Born to Dance (BET) – Viewers: 908,000 (#13), A18-49: 0.4 (#10t)
The Rachel Zoe Project (Bravo) – Viewers: 899,000 (#14), A18-49: 0.5 (#8t)
Carfellas (Discovery, 10:30 p.m.) – Viewers: 840,000 (#15), A18-49: 0.4 (#10t)
Auction Kings (Discovery, 10 p.m.) – Viewers: 706,000 (#16), A18-49: 0.3 (#15t)
Big Sexy (TLC) – Viewers: 689,000 (#17), A18-49: 0.3 (#15t)

The Centsables Announced for Fall 2012
New weekly half-hour animated series The Centsables, which combines entertainment with education, will launch in first-run syndication with 13 episodes beginning in Fall 2012.  The premise, which meets FCC E/I requirements, focuses on bank employees by day and superheroes by choice that teach young kids about finance.  Outside of the series will be an interactive website (, comic book series, collectible action figures, board game, trading cards, clothing and other license products.  Distribution efforts are currently underway.  For more information, contact Tony Intelisano at

Top 20 Ranking in Syndication – Week of August 29
Minus Oprah, CBS Television Distribution court show mainstay Judge Judy led the pack, one-tenth of a rating point ahead of Wheel of Fortune from CBS and Two and a Half Men from Warner Bros.  CBS, as always, continued to dominate with 5 of the top 10, and 8 of the top 20 entries.  Top rated in talk was Maury from NBC Universal with a 2.2 rating in households — one tenth of a rating point ahead of Live with Regis & Kelly from Disney-ABC and Dr. Phil from CBS.  Who will replace Regis Philbin after he steps down in November is still a mystery.

What follows are the top 20 rated programs in syndication (first-run and off-network) based on AA (average audience) households for the week of August 29.

Judge Judy (CBS Television Distribution): 6.0 rating, Wheel of Fortune (CBS) and Two and a Half Men (Warner Bros.): 5.9 each, Jeopardy (CBS): 4.8, Family Guy (Twentieth Television): 4.1, Entertainment Tonight (CBS): 3.3, My Wife and Kids (Disney-ABC): 3.2, That ‘70s Show (Twentieth): 3.0, How I Met Your Mother (Twentieth): 2.9, Inside Edition (CBS): 2.7, Family Feud (Twentieth), Everybody Love s Raymond (CBS), Seinfeld (Sony Pictures Television) and Two and a Half Men – Weekend B (Warner Bros.): 2.6 each, Judge Joe Brown (CBS), Criminal Minds (CBS) and Without a Trace (Warner Bros.): 2.5 each, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Disney-ABC), The Office (NBC Universal), George Lopez (Warner Bros.) and Monk (NBCU): 2.4 each

Anderson, RightThisMinute, Excused and Gloria Allred – Day 3
Here are the three-day metered market results for this week’s first-run entries: Anderson, RightThisMinute, Excused and We The People With Gloria Allred.

Anderson (Warner Bros.) – 54 markets
Sept. 2010 time period: 1.3/ 4

-Monday 9/12/11
Lead-In: 1.2/ 4
Anderson: 1.1/ 3

-Tuesday 9/13/11
Lead-In: 1.2/ 4
Anderson: 1.1/ 3

-Wednesday 9/14/11
Lead-In: 1.1/ 4
Anderson: 1.1/ 3

The operative observation: consistency.  But Anderson is nothing to boast about considering some of the advantageous time periods.

RightThisMinute (Sony Pictures Television) – 15 markets
Sept. 2010 time period: 1.4/ 4

-Monday 9/12/11
Lead-In: 1.4/ 4
RightThisMinute: 0.9/ 3

-Tuesday 9/13/11
Lead-In: 1.6/ 5
RightThisMinute: 0.8/ 3

-Wednesday 9/14/11
Lead-In: 1.4/ 4
RightThisMinute: 0.8/ 2

At an average 0.8/ 3 in the overnights, erosion to-date is 47 percent from both the lead-in and year-ago time period for this soft launch.

Excused (CBS Television Distribution): 51 markets
Sept. 2010: 0.7/ 2

-Monday 9/12/11
Lead-In: 0.6/ 1
Excused: 0.4/ 1

-Tuesday 9/13/11
Lead-In: 0.7/ 2
Excused: 0.4/ 1

-Wednesday 9/13/11
Lead-In: 0.6/ 2
Excused: 0.4/ 1

Another operative observation: clinker.  The only positive of being stuck at a 0.4 rating is growth of 25 percent if it eventually rises to a 0.5.

We The People With Gloria Allred (Entertainment Studios): 30 markets
Sept. 2010 time period: 0.6/ 2

-Monday 9/12/11
Lead-In: 0.7/ 2
We The People With Gloria Allred: 0.6/ 2

-Tuesday 9/13/11
Lead-In: 0.6/ 2
We The People With Gloria Allred: 0.4/ 1

-Wednesday 9/14/11
Lead-In: 0.5/ 2
We The People With Gloria Allred: 0.4/ 1

Was it really necessary to introduce another court driven strip?

Odds of Survival for The Secret Circle

A young woman (Britt Robertson) moves to her mother’s hometown of New Salem and discovers she is a witch who can unlock a centuries-old battle of good versus evil.  Thomas Dekker plays her love interest.

-Lead-in: The Vampire Diaries
-The Competition: Grey’s Anatomy (ABC), The Office (NBC) and Whitney (NBC), Bones (Fox), The Secret Circle (CW)

Vampires into witches sounds like the perfect flow, with The Secret Circle likely to benefit out of The CW’s most-watched show, The Vampire Diaries.  If former time period occupant Nikita can make it into a second season, there is every reason to believe The Secret Circle will also find its niche.  But since Thursday at 9 p.m. is a tough hour, expect erosion for The Secret Circle out of The Vampire Diaries of about 20-30 percent.  Regardless, that should still be good enough for it to stay on the air.

-Chance of Survival for The Secret Circle (Based on 1-1 to 10-1 odds):
