Stellar Results for the Summer Olympics

August 4, 2012 by Marc Berman in Highlights with 2 Comments

MOST-WATCHED GAMES IN PRIMETIME AT THE MIDWAY POINT IN 36 YEARS

Based on the first eight nights of the London Olympics, NBC is averaging 34.5 million viewers, the most of any non-U.S. Summer Olympics since the Montreal Games in 1976, according to the fast affiliate results from Nielsen. The 34.5 million, to-date, is 4.4 million more than Beijing (30.1 million) and 7.9 million more than Athens (26.6 million). What follows is the breakdown by night:

Friday, July 27: 40.7 million (opening)
Saturday, July 28: 28.7 million
Sunday, July 29: 36.0 million
Monday, July 30: 31.6 million
Tuesday, July 31: 38.7 million
Wednesday, August 1: 30.8 million
Thursday, August 2: 36.8 million
Friday, August 3: 28.5 million

The London Olympics concludes on Sunday, August 12.

These are extraordinary Nielsens for NBC, and I can’t help but think they will get a nice lift for their freshmen fall series. The promos for ‘Revolution’, ‘Go On’ and ‘Animal Practice’ have all been in heavy rotation, and I’m expecting them all to start strongly; I’ve seen very little of ‘Chicago Fire’ by comparison.

Another series that should see a lift is ‘Rock Center with Brian Williams’…the Peacock has crafted a spot focusing on its hard news cred, and I think it will gain some audience (it’s summer Nielsens have been outpacing its winter-spring numbers).

Things are looking up for Mr. Robert Greenblatt, and his comedy-laden sked could yet make a breakthrough run for the gold in the upcoming 2012-13 season.

I like some of the new NBC comedies (no Go On). But it does not mean, unfortunately, the promos during the Olympics will help. It certainly cannot hurt, but there is no guarantee.

  • Just enjoyed the season-finale of The Crazy Ones. If CBS passes on season 2, another net (TBS perhaps) should pick it up.
