Metered Market Wednesday Ratings

Solid Sampling for NBC’s Go On out of The London Olympics

Wednesday 8/08/12
Metered Market Results

Household
Rating/Share
NBC 18.6/30
CBS 3.1/ 5
ABC 2.1/ 3
FOX 1.4/ 2
CW 0.7/ 1

———-

-Countdown to the Official Start of the 2012-13 TV Season: 39 days

———-

Ratings Breakdown:
NBC dominated the overnight Wednesday troops by epic proportions, of course, and the strategy of previewing new Matthew Perry sitcom Go On at 11:04 p.m. ET worked. It was clearly sampled. But will the audience return for Go On in its regularly scheduled Tuesday 9 p.m. time period (out of The Voice) this fall? Not to this extent it won’t.

The London Olympics averaged an 18.6 rating/30 share in the metered markets from 8-11 p.m., peaking in the 9:30 p.m. half-hour (in household rating) with a 20.6/32. Go On in the 11 p.m. half-hour (which is approximate because it included the final few minutes of The Olympics) scored a 12.7/24. Go On will return on September 11 for its official Tuesday 9 p.m. time period debut.

Elsewhere, and it was not much considering NBC more than doubled the competition combined, only Big Brother on CBS and Final Witness on ABC were original telecasts. The summer guilty pleasure opened with a 3.8/ 7 in the overnights at 8 p.m., followed by encore telecasts of Criminal Minds (#2: 2.7/ 4) and CSI (#2: 2.9/ 5) from 9-11 p.m.

In the distant No. 3 spot was ABC care of repeats of The Middle (#3: 2.4/ 4), Suburgatory (#3: 1.9/ 3) and two episodes of Modern Family (#3, avg. 2.2/ 4) from 8-10 p.m., and aforementioned Final Witness (#3: 2.1/ 3) at 10 p.m.

Fox populated this second Wednesday in August with a two-hour encore telecast of So You Think You Can Dance, which finished fourth with a 1.4/ 2 from 8-10 p.m. And The CW aired back-to-back repeats of Supernatural, which averaged a 0.7/ 1.

Once the new season begins, CBS is the network to beat in total viewers care of Survivor: Nicaragua, Criminal Minds and CSI; and the race among adults 18-49 is likely to fall between the home of Modern Family, ABC, and returning The X Factor on Fox. Will the arrival of new judges Britney Spears and Demi Lovato make a difference on The X Factor next season? If the recent lackluster session at The Summer Press Tour (featuring the cast via satellite) is any indication, consider that unlikely.

OTHER NETWORK NEWS

Kelsey Grammer to Develop Crime Drama Pariah for NBC
NBC, which has no shortage of freshman series for next season, has another potential new drama in the works: procedural crime solver Pariah from Lionsgate Television and Kelsey Grammer’s Grammnet Productions. Inspired by the best-selling book Freakonomics by Stephen Dauber and Steven Levitt and executive produced by Grammer (who is doing double duty as the current star of Starz political thriller Boss), Pariah will follow the Mayor of San Diego who assigns an academic with no background in law enforcement to head up a task force. The academic ultimately uses the citizens of San Diego to solve crimes, with his methods proving controversial among the city’s police department.

Jimmy Fallon Oscar No Go
Recent reports of Jimmy Fallon in talks to host the Academy Awards on ABC in 2013 have concluded and Fallon will not be stepping up to the podium. ABC, apparently, was upset because Fallon competes directly with Jimmy Kimmel in late night and Fallon made it official to Matt Lauer of The Today Show that is will not happen…at least not in 2013.

Hollywood Heights Heads to TeenNick

Just six weeks after debuting, Nick at Nite will ship low-rated youth-themed serial Hollywood Heights to sibling network TeenNick effective on Monday, August 13. Based on Mexican telenovela Alcanzar una Estrella, the 80-episode series, which is averaging just 570,000 viewers, will air weeknights on TeenNick at 8 p.m. ET.

FX Productions Signs First-Look Deal with Color Force

FX Productions has entered into an agreement with Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and their production company, Color Force, for a first-look production deal with FXP exclusively for cable television. Color Force will develop series projects from writer-producers, while securing the rights to published material that can be adapted into television series. The pact with Color Force is the first POD deal for FX Productions that was not established through a prior existing relationship with the studio. FXP currently has output deals in place with RCG Productions, the production company of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia; Executive Producer/Showrunners Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day and Glenn Howerton; and Floyd County Productions, the home of animated Archer.
