Today in TV History:
The first network telecast of political conventions aired live from Philadelphia in 1948. Viewers bored with early summer TV options, meanwhile, had a new available theatrical: Jaws, which opened on this day in 1975.

Metered Market Wednesday Ratings

Fox Wins; New Summer Entries Do Not Impress

Wednesday 6/20/12

Metered Market Results

Household
Rating/Share
Fox 5.0/ 9
CBS 3.8/ 7
ABC 3.0/ 5
NBC 2.5/ 4
CW 0.7/ 1

-Percent Change from Year-Ago Evening – Wednesday 6/22/11

CW: +14, CBS: no change, ABC: – 6, Fox: -14, NBC: -63

Note: President Obama addressed the country in the 8 p.m. half-hour on the year-ago evening.

———-

-Winners:
So You Think You Can Dance (Fox)

-Losers (excluding repeats):
Justin Bieber: All Around the World (NBC)

———-

Ratings Breakdown:
Two hours of So You Think You Can Dance led Fox to midweek victory with an average 5.0 rating/9 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., which was slightly above recent levels. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

So You Think You Can Dance (Fox)
8:00 p.m.: 4.6/ 8 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 4.9/ 9 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 5.2/ 9 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 5.3/ 9 (#1)

In week four news, summer entry Dogs in the City on CBS finished second in the 8 p.m. hour, with a series-low 3.5/ 6. Comparably, that was 10 percent below one week earlier (3.9/ 7 on June 13). Next on the Eye net were repeats of Criminal Minds (#2: 4.0/ 7) and CSI (#1: 4.1/ 7) from 9-11 p.m.

In specials news, part one of the two-part Justin Bieber: All Around the World on NBC was not so special at a mere (and fourth-place) 2.0/ 4 at 8 p.m. It looks like not everyone has Bieber fever! Two encore telecasts of tired Law & Order: SVU capped off the evening for NBC with a 2.3/ 4 in the 9 p.m. hour (#4) and a third-place 3.1/ 5 at 10 p.m. The dramatic 63 percent decline for NBC was a result of The Voice and America’s Got Talent airing on the year-ago evening.

This fall, Law & Order: SVU airs Wednesday at 9 p.m. out of new sitcoms Animal Practice and Guys With Kids and into new Dick Wolf drama Chicago Fire. While I would not get too used to the comedies, Chicago Fire is a drama to keep a positive eye (or two) on. It has all the necessary ingredients to succeed.

On ABC, encore telecasts of ABC comedies The Middle (#3: 3.1/ 6), Suburgatory (#3: 2.4/ 4) and Modern Family (#3: 3.5/ 6) from 8-9:30 p.m. led into another 90-minute edition of recent singing competition Duets at an uneventful 3.1/ 6 in the overnights from 9:30-11 p.m. Comparably, that was on par from one week earlier. Take a look at Duets by half-hour:

Duets (ABC)
9:30 p.m.: 2.8/ 5 (#3)
10:00 p.m.: 3.2/ 6 (#2)
10:30 p.m.: 3.2/ 6 (#2t)

Elsewhere, back-to-back episodes of America’s Next Top Model on The CW, which moves into the Friday 8 p.m. time period next season, averaged a very last-place 0.7/ 1 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m.

CBS Knocks ABC With Dancing With the Stars Spoof

CBS, no doubt, is none too pleased it could not stop Big Brother clone The Glass House on ABC from airing (which opened on Monday with a lackluster 3.98 million viewers and a 1.5 rating/4 share among adults 18-49 in the 10 p.m. hour, based on the Live Plus Same Day data). And in what it refers to as “recent developments in the creative and legal community,” the Eye net issued a spoof statement on the development of a “dazzling” new reality show, Dancing On the Stars, will be broadcast live from the Hollywood Forever Cemetery and will feature “moderately famous and sort of well-known people you almost recognize competing for big prizes by dancing on the graves of some of Hollywood’s most iconic and well-beloved stars of stage and screen.”

CBS was unsuccessful trying to issue a temporary restraining order would have blocked ABC from launching The Glass House this past Monday night. But The Glass House launched, the audience balked, and this pale imitation of Big Brother will only likely make Julie Chen and the next round of housebound contestants even more popular next season. You can’t fool an audience, Glass House, and the return of Big Brother (on Thursday, July 12 at 9 p.m. ET) is now only 21 days away. Count me in.

More Duck Dynasty on A&E
A&E has renewed docu-series Duck Dynasty for a second season, with an order for 26 new half-hour episodes slated to premiere in fourth quarter 2012. Rizzoli & Isles Dominates on TNT Tuesday

Episode two of the new season of Rizzoli & Isles on TNT finished as the most-watched show on basic cable on Tuesday, with 5.4 million viewers at 9 p.m. ET (according to Live Plus Same Day data). Week-to-week, the crime solver rose by four percent in total viewers and seven percent among adults 18-49 (1.3 million). Lead-out Franklin & Bash followed with 3.0 million viewers, 871,000 adults 18-49 and 1.1 million adults 25-54, which increased by single-digit percentages from one week earlier.

FX Orders New Comedy Series Pilot

FX has placed an order for a comedy pilot from Rescue Me producers Denis Leary and Jim Serpico called Bronx Warrants, which will focus on a group of detectives in the Bronx assigned to arrest individuals with outstanding warrants. It is based on the real life exploits of David Joglar and Richard Wetzel, who are co-producers, and is produced by FX Productions. FX’s comedy roster includes It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The League, Archer, Louie, Wilfred, Brand X with Russell Brand, Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, Legit, which debuts in early 2013.
