TCA SUMMER PRESS TOUR

The CW

Executive Session

Based on the raw data from Nielsen, The CW has its woes, of course, with a limited audience and ongoing erosion. But the network continues to move forward by focusing on the world of new technology.

“As we’ve learned, and the epiphany I had come December or January last year and part of this year, was that The CW was an aggregation of all these things,”
said Entertainment President Mark Pedowitz. “Shows tend to play at any time, any place, and that’s why I wanted a re branding of saying “TV Now!” with the broadcast side at the center of it all, but we’re realistic of where the audience is. So we want people to view the show. We want people to come there, and if they cannot view it within the live piece, then we want them to come eight hours later because that’s when we’ll make it available even on Hulu or on CWTV.com.”

The focus at The CW is on young females, of course. But the network recognizes the value of the young male audience and it programming more in that direction next season and into the future.

“We’re an adult 18 34 network and are in need of having some men come to our network,”
noted Pedowitz. “The loss of Smallville actually had an impact to us. We believe particularly with Arrow, as much as it appeals to men it will have an appeal to women also. We are going to run Cult for 13 straight weeks in midseason. And Beauty and the Beast, you may think it’s for men. What we do find is it’s about a love story, and it’s romantic, and it is a woman based show, and I think they all fit within the wheelhouse of The CW with adults 18 34.”

As for starting the season the first week of October:

Last year we successfully launched all three new shows early,” said Pedowitz. “And then, premiere week came and traction disappeared and we were struggling somewhat throughout the rest of the season. The theory here was get away from the clutter, start in October. It reduces the amount of repeats in the fourth quarter to minimal. It also helps the first and second quarter with very limited repeats, which is one of the complaints that everyone had about The CW. So if we reduce the repeats and increase the amount of original programming, we give a reason for people to watch.”

The one advantage about struggling is there is only one place to go. And hopefully The CW will pick up steam next season. There are just so many excuses is has left, after all.
