It was a day filled with high-profile sporting events throughout the afternoon until late night. In prime time, a thrilling Game 7 of the Western Conference first round series between the Los Angeles Clippers and San Antonio Spurs propelled TNT to top all networks (including broadcast) among total viewers (eking by CBS) and key demographics. In total viewers, the game fell 18 percent from the year-ago Game 7 (Memphis-Oklahoma City; part of a Game 7 triple header ) but rose 7 percent from two years ago (Chicago-Brooklyn).

As for outside of prime time, NBC’s late afternoon telecast of the 141st Kentucky Derby averaged 16.0 million viewers – up 4 percent from last year (15.3 million). Viewership peaked at 17.9 million viewers from 6:30-6:45 p.m. ET when American Pharoah crossed the finish line.

Saturday’s Kentucky Derby is the most-watched Saturday afternoon sporting event since NBC’s telecast of the AFC Divisional Playoff on Jan. 10, 2015 (Baltimore-New England, 34.0 million viewers).

Saturday’s pre-race coverage, which included the 5 p.m. ET show open narrated by Kentucky’s own Ashley Judd, averaged 8.8 million viewers – third-highest for a pre-race show since 1992.

Louisville, the home of the Kentucky Derby, topped the metered markets with a 35.0 rating/65 share (top 20 markets listed below).

And in late night, what should come as no surprise, there were a record amount of Pay-Per-View purchases for the boxing match (held at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand) of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. versus Manny Pacquiao. Final figures to be published soon.

CBS Wins Again with ‘Dr. Quinn’ and ‘Walker’

Much like the Saturdays of current, the major networks filled the night with movies and special programming. But of course, the 90’s saw at least one network that still broadcast original scripted series on the night, which led to ratings dividends for them: CBS again dominated this Saturday evening in 1995 with its hit duo of “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” and the night’s No. 1 TV program, by far, the action drama “Walker, Texas Ranger” with Chuck Norris.
