Updated Results in Network Daytime Talk

May 24, 2012 by Marc Berman in Highlights with 23 Comments

The immediate positive news for CBS in daytime for the week of May 14 was a 12 percent rise in total viewers for Emmy nominated The Talk, which averaged 2.31 million (and a flat performance in women 25-54: 1.0 rating/ 6 share and women 18-49: 0.7/ 5), based on the Live Plus Same Day ratings. Comparably, the total viewer delivery was eight percent above The Chew on ABC, which dipped from year-ago occupant All My Children by as much as 25 percent as follows:

All My Children – Week of 5/16/11
Viewers: 2.51 million, Women 25-54: 1.2/ 7, Women 18-49: 0.8/ 6,
Women 18-34: 0.5/ 3

The Chew – Week of 5/14/12
Viewers: 2.13 million, Women 25-54: 0.9/ 6, Women 18-49: 0.7/ 4,
Women 18-34: 0.5/ 3

Percent Change – The Chew vs. All My Children

Viewers: -15, Women 25-54: -25, Women 18-49: -13, Women 18-34: no change

The View on ABC, of course, was most-watched at an above-average 3.60 million viewers, while canceled The Revolution limped along with 1.33 million – 51 percent below One Life to Live one year earlier. Tuesday’s installment of The View, featuring an exclusive interview with President Obama, rose to 4.7 million viewers — the talker’s most-watched telecast since Feb. 20, 2011. Results for the day among women 18-34 (330,000 / 1.0 rating) and women 18-49 (895,000 / 1.4) were its best since May 4, 2011 and May 2, 2011, respectively.

If ABC had only been smart enough to leave well enough alone they would still have daytime viewers.

ABC claims they researched “what viewers want” but, obviously, they were terribly incorrect. There’s no way that these replacement shows will ever have the loyalty and number of viewers that All My Children and One Life To Live had. The daytime audience on ABC is gone except for watching General Hospital.

ABC should have left it alone!!!!! They ain’t seen nothing yet….just wait!!!! Right now, the only thing we soapers are watching on ABC is General Hospital and it is sooooo good!!!! But my heart is aching for AMC and OLTL.

ABC is beyond doubt the worst network in the history of TV. No one watches anything they have on and I for one never will again except GH. The shows that were cancelled were top among viewers and they have not come close since. Nothing they put on the air will ever again draw the viewers that the soaps had. They are boycotted by myself and millions of others throughout the country. What the hell do they care? They don’t.

Keep on falling, Spew. That’s the way you need to go.

I have never watched the Talk, Chew and have only watched
View when the people from the soaps were on. I will never watch any reality or talk shows that have replaced soaps. I especially so hate ABC for cancellling my favorites AMC and OLTL. I will watch GH for long as it is on because of OLTL characters.

How come nobody is mad at CBS for replacing ATWT and Guiding Light with The Talk?
Also we can’t really compare the Chew to AMC because all soaps are dropping year to year. If AMC was still on it likely would have fallen another 10 percent easily.

So we’re back to 15 percent below AMC now. As always, Marc, thanks for having our back on this. While I know this isn’t your fault, Marc, I continue to find it amazing that other non-soap commenters on your site continue to claim that the Chew draws the same numbers that AMC did

ABC/Disney should have left their daytime lineup alone. They have now handed the #1 spot to CBS. Hopefully Good Afternoon America does poorly, or it’s Good Bye General Hospital. Thanks again Marc for your continued support!

I watched the replacement shows one time, so boring. These shows play to women and the subject matter is both boring and degrading. Will only watch GH until the soaps are back where they belong. Sorry ABC you brought it all on yourself.

I don’t care for any of these four shows. They all sucks and I hope that they all tank. Well, The Revolution already did. I hope the other three follow suit and soon.

I continue to boycott ABC/D except for the General Hospital Hour.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/susanmz/ susanmz

Except for GH, I continue to boycott ABC/Disney in the daytime and primetime. It’s not much of a sacrifice since there isn’t anything on the network worth watching anyway.

ABC screwed themselves. They could be on top if they had of listened to the viewers instead of those idiots THEY hired to tell them(ABC)how to make more money & keep viewers. Well, your so called experts, maybe Frons was one of them, sure helped ABC,didn’t they. I hope ABC hits bottom in every catagory. If all soap fans would boycott all but GH ABC will hit bottom & stay there. Congrats. to CBS. I want my OLTL-Erika Slezak-back.

Thanks Marc, for this current update on the Daytime Ratings. That both OLTL & AMC received substanially higher ratings for the same time slot last year, as ABCs’ replacement shows have this current year, is not at all surprising to the vast number of Soap Opera fans! ABC, your losing money, in your attempt to spend less on shows that you say cost less to produce, but that more & more people could care less about watching! Never should have replaced OLTL & AMC!

Thank you Marc for sharing with us how ABC continues to decline in Daytime ratings. I am hopeful that GAA will not get the ratings they are hoping for and that GH will remain safe, for the immediate future, at least.

Thank you Marc yet again. I continue to shake my head at the losses ABC has weekly during daytime seeing how many more viewers that they had last year at this time. I hope ABC realizes that soap opera viewers are a larger base of viewers than those watching the afternoon “talkers.”

Thank you Marc once again , for always leaving me with a big wide grin on my face after reading your articles. I am elated that The Talk is pouncing The Chew We all know that show is plummeting downwards in the ratings Rest assured GAA will do just the same. Congratulations ABC on killing a once thriving network.

Thanks for another great article, Marc! Earlier this year, I wondered if it was possible for a TV to actually have NO viewers…and it seems like I might be getting an answer to my question with The Revolution :) I also believe that a healthy daytime line-up is necessary for a winning prime time line-up and it looks like that too is happening as ABC has destroyed it’s daytime line-up and it’s prime time is now suffering. Wake up & smell the soap, ABC!

    • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/amcoltl6870/ Troy Turner

I agree totally, Shannon-It’s certainly no coincidence why ABC finds itself as the last-place network now. Everything’s connected, and I defy anyone to tell me otherwise…

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/owensborosteve/ OwensboroSteve

Marc, I always look forward to your articles! Thank you so much for all your hard work!

We all know why ABC’s numbers will continue to decline. The disrespect shown to the viewers of daytime drama will continue to cause them misery equal to, or more than, the misery the network has caused its viewers.
