THE TALK UP, BUT THE CHEW DELIVERS MORE VIEWERS

The View was dominant, The Talk was up and The Chew remains down from All My Children. Based on the Live Plus Same Day ratings from Nielsen for the week of May 28, Barbara Walters and company on ABC averaged 3.22 million viewers, which dipped by three percent from the year-ago week (with minor demo losses as well). The Talk on CBS was on the plus side, building by 10 percent in total viewers (1.97 million) and as high as 22 percent among women 18-49. But The Chew on ABC, which continues to erode from year-ago occupant All My Children, delivered more total viewers, women 18-34 and women 25-54 than The Talk. Take a look:

The View (ABC) – 11 a.m. ET
Viewers: 3.22 million (- 3 percent), W18-49: 607,000 (- 5), W25-54: 759,000 (-12), W18-34: 211,000 (+ 3)

The Chew* (ABC) – 1 p.m. ET
Viewers: 2.07 million (-11), W18-49: 384,000 (-23), W25-54: 520,000 (-23), W18-34: 150,000 (+ 2)

The Talk* (CBS) – 2 p.m. ET
Viewers: 1.97 million (+10), W18-49: 410,000 (+22), W25-54: 512,000 (+20), W18-34: 120,000 (+ 5)

Glad the Spew is continuing to erodde, but it doesn’t need more viewers.

Having Laura Wright from General Hospital may have helped The Chew this week. The show is obviously not the success that ABC wanted it to be. And now with The View beginning to lose viewers I hope ABC is getting nervous.

ABC/Disney needs to wake up an smell the coffee!!! We soap fans want our soaps we don’t want no more talk shows or reality tv!!!Bring back the soaps!

Interesting to see the View starting to decline. I remain skeptical about the Chew “truly” improving. There was a big draw by having General Hospital’s Laura Wright on the show last week.

Well, three of these shows are soap replacements. And the one that isn’t airs on ABC. I hate them all and want them all to tank.

Thank you Marc once again for letting me do the “Happy Dance” and mainly this week because now the View is starting to have that downward spiral ripple effect. Just wondering what ABC’s next bright idea might be. Hopefully, it will be to do the right thing and let’s face it Laura Wright was used just like Susan Lucci by ABC and probably her job would have been in some sort of jeopardy. Thank you once again Marc for this weeks ratings.

Wow! The Talk dipped below 2 million! This is getting interesting. With all my being, I hope and am waiting for The Chew ratings to dip and subsequently get canceled; AMC & OLTL both should still be on air. For the life of me, I don’t understand why it’s celebrated when The Chew brings in anything above 2 million? AMC did this on it’s last legs, regularly, after Frons pushed out THE (creator) Agnes Nixon, got a horrible writer for the show who is quoted to have said that he didn’t care about the characters of AMC, and after making the cast of AMC move their lives from New York to California (and naturally, a lot of the vets didn’t want to make the move, and they didn’t, so the show suffered the loss). Really think about it: under those dire circumstances, AMC still brought about 2 million viewers regularly (and we’re not even counting the viewers who tuned in via SoapNet, which is said to have better ratings than OWN, yet it’s still being taken off the air). With OLTL, it’s not even worth dignifying; everyone knows it was ABC’s #1 soap (plus, I had read in Branco’s magazine that ABC turned down a multi million dollar deal to syndicate OLTL in another country) and under budget. I’m thrilled The Revolution failed! I hope The Chew is next and then The Talk. If Guiding Light, the longest running series in HISTORY, can get axed for ‘low ratings,’ then The Talk better get axed as well, should the ratings continue to dip below 2 million. We all know that The Talk is extra safe though because Julie Chen is married to Moonves.

It is just ridiculous that ABCD has not wised up and brought back OLTL. I can’t believe it!! I do not understand why they have not taken the momentum of the movements to save the soap genre and run with it. If they are interested in making money this would be the way to go. I am fortunate that I still have Soapnet. I will be lost without it and dread the day it goes dark. Listen up ABCD…You need to get your heads out of the sand and stop this ridiculous talk of expanding GMA to the afternoon hours. We want our soaps back!!!!

Thanks for the article Marc :) I’m glad to see the ratings go down on ABC !! The Chew ratings might of been high because of Laura Wright from GH was on. ABC/Disney does not care about their viewers. They are going to do what they want to do, NO MATTER WHAT !! They just need to sell the rights of AMC & OLTL so they can LIVE ON somewhere else !!

The View only got 211,000 in 18-49???? if so, YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I ONLY WATCH GH ON ABC…AND I AM READY FOR GMAA. BECAUSE NONE OF MY FRIENDS…NOR WILL I, EVER WATCH THIS CRAP!

So glad to see that The Chew is still down from AMC’s numbers. The Chew MUST go to the same place The Revolution is headed–to the cancellation heap! Thank you, Marc, for keeping the fans up to date on the ratings.

The ABC execs have been lobotomized.

I LIVE for my 3 hours every night of OLTL reruns I have taped on Soapnet. I have gotten back into General Hospital, after years of not watching, and am LOVING it. However, it is the only thing I watch on ABC daytime, and my primetime viewing is going away from ABC also. Cancelling the soaps was an even a bigger mistake than the “new” Coke fiasco in the 1980’s.

    • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/shannonb/ ShannonB

I agree Martha; I’ve got about 50 OLTL episodes saved from SN before it went off the air and am watching 1 a day during the time it would have been on. I am getting close to the end of my “stash” though and am dreading the day for that final show….again.

Thank you, Marc, for another informative article. We soap fans know that it’s just a matter of time before the Chew’s ratings decline so much that it follows in the footsteps of the Revolution. (cancelled). The View, while still doing well, is getting old and maybe it’s time for it to be retired also. ABC’s daytime lineup is terrible except for General Hospital and if they cancel that show, they can wave goodbye to any daytime viewers in the soap community.

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/lindseyh/ LindseyH

Thank you Marc! I will continue to boycott ABC except for the General Hospital hour. Too bad we can’t get stats on the AMC and OLTL reruns on SoapNet!

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/save-thesoaps/ Save TheSoaps

I will continue to boycott absolutely everything on abc/disney except GH until the return on OLTL and hopefully AMC too. When are the execs and the borad members at abc going to wake up, we are not going away!

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/shannonb/ ShannonB

Thanks for the updates Marc! The fact that the Chew was still down over AMC proves that not even having a soap star on their miserable program will help ratings. It doesn’t matter to me what the topic is or who is a guest; I will never watch a daytime talk show, and that goes double for GAA(g). Sorry Katie; maybe you can find a job at OWN….

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/amcoltl6870/ Troy Turner

Down 11 percent, even with Laura Wright as a guest. Even though I totally get why she did it. this should tell you more about the weakness of The Chew than anything else. I just hope that ABC doesn’t use this to try to justify a possible GH cancellation. As always, Marc, thanks for having our back on this…

  • http://www.tvmediainsights.com/members/sjmarcipan/ sjmarcipan

The Chew needs to go. GMA afternoon needs to go and Katie as well. ABC/Disney blew it.
